NOTE FROM This edition will be out of print once the last remaining copies are sold. The new paperback 194755000.

On a transatlantic cruise to New York, sculptor Rhys Matherton struggles to piece his life back together after losing his mother, inheriting a fortune, and finding out his father isn't his father after all. He spills a tray of drinks on a handsome stranger, then he finds himself up against a wall getting the best hand-job he's ever had. And for the first time in his life, he feels whole.

Rhys enjoys the company of Silas Quint, but for the eerie way no one pays attention to them even while they kiss in a crowded bar. Silas explains he's a forest fae able to glamour the room around them--and more importantly, that he's on the cruise to hunt vampires. Rhys thinks Silas is full of it, until he discovers vampires are real, and he's part of their main course.

Silas Quint can't be distracted by a human lover, even one as lovely as Rhys. Stuck in the middle of the ocean, he has barely enough energy to hunt the vampires he's been sent to destroy. Rhys is full of the one thing Silas needs most--the element of living plants. Only sucking energy from Rhys would make Silas as soulless as the creatures he hunts. How can he keep Rhys safe, without becoming like the very monsters he hunts?

Updating this with content warnings behind a spoiler cut, since that seems like a decent thing to do. I do plan to write a sequel, yes. It's the next book I'm working on. Hopefully Spring/Summer 2019. The book is plotted, I just need to meet a contracted deadline first!

(previous update 2)

I will be re-releasing Close Quarter on August 15, 2017!

The edits are minor--mostly some wording changes and some cleaning up of the prose. There's a new (darker, sexier) cover, too! It's available for pre-order on Amazon.

(previous update 1)
Just a note that the Loose Id edition of Close Quarter will go Out of Print in mid November 2016.

What do you mean there’s no sequel??😭😭😭

I’m literally in tears because this was SO GOOD. Ok, so there’s instalove (the MCs confess after two days) BUT the world building is unique and the MCs go through a lot in those two days! Plus, I was sensing an undercurrent of fated mates even though it was never explicitly mentioned. Good god, Silas and Rhys were so hot for each other I felt like a voyeur 90% of the time. There’s no way I’d give the spice anything less than 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 because Anna Zabo didn’t have to go that hard but she did and I loved every second of it!

Unfortunately this was published in 2012 and there’s been nothing but a novella since

The audiobook did come out in July 2024 so maybe there’s hope??🤞🏽

I would do ANYTHING for a sequel — especially since there’s still so much more to learn about Rhys and his parentage + the world building

aaaaahh

I’m going to be rereading this soon💯

Audiobook review: 5 stars
Michael Ferraiuolo you fucking genius!

Expect
- Instalove (but it’s very sweet)
- Vers MCs
- Edging (loads of it🥵)
- Public sex

Different. Unexpected. Entertaining. Hot.

Does a M/M romance with Fae, Vampires, Daemons and Angels work? And all of that set up on a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic ocean? Yes, it does. It was entertaining, funny, thrilling and hot as hell.

After losing his mother Rhys is on a cruise to New York. He just needs the time to piece his life back together. When spilling his drink on a handsome stranger he gets to know Silas, a forest fae. He is able to glamor the room around them — and more importantly, he's on the cruise to hunt vampires. Rhys thinks Silas is full shit, until he discovers vampires are real, and he’s part of their main course...

The story, a mix of romance and horror, is fast and entertaining written. The MCs are adorable and I liked the supporting character Vasil so much that I hope he get's his own story.

4 solid stars for an entertaining and thrilling read. :)

My biggest problem with this book was that it dragged for me. I thought there were too many sex scenes and I got a bit bored during them. Characters were interesting and the world was interesting, but I was a little disappointed that the book mostly skipped over the characters really getting to know each other. And the plot repeated itself a lot - vampires injure Silas, Rhys unexpectedly drives off vampires, Rhys heals Silas, rinse and repeat. I didn't dislike the book, but I did find myself putting it down to do other things.

Very different and surprisingly clever. Remember this is fantasy, you need to be willing to just go with it in places and for being open to that you will be rewarded. There are twists and turns and unexpected developments that I questioned too early. It is all worked out brilliantly, I just had to trust the author. While I hold that it could have been tighter in the middle, it was a complete and fulfilling read. Even though it was complete I find my self really hoping for a sequel. There will be a sequel, right? Because there is so much for these characters to accomplish and they’re just great together.

THE CHARACTERS

“You move me, Rhys, in wild and wonderful ways.

Rhys Matherton - He is not at all what I expected from the first few chapters. In fact he continues to change and develop throughout the book. The brash American with unreal world problems.

“Fae embody everything humans desire. Unglamoured, we’re a bit overwhelming to their senses.”

Silas Quint - Arrogant. He exudes confidence and power, but that confidence hides a deeply painful past and fear.

The delicate scent of sweet violets drifted around them

Rhys and Silas together Yes, they’re almost a totally separate character together. Gorgeous, beautiful love making so near to nature it’s pure and wondrous to experience.

Anaxandros - Properly scary, mysterious and ancient. Too powerful, too twisted and too vicious, a great mix for a bad guy.

THE STORY

A contemporary fantasy with delightful surprises and intensely steamy and frequent sex scenes. It’s not often that I think there’s too much sex, but I may have in this one, even though the sex scenes were some of the best parts about this book. More on that in a bit.

By way of an accident Rhys and Silas meet. Instant distaste turns to lustful tastes that help to clean up a sticky situation. Soon it becomes apparent that there is an energy flow between the two that is unexpected from Rhys’ human nature. Needing to understand more he seeks out Silas who holds all the answers. If only he would talk to Rhys instead of making out with him. These guys can not keep their hands off each other.

THE WRITING

Somehow this story is both quick and drawn out. I found myself breezing through some of the later sex scenes, but was also mesmerized and captivated by the unique and descriptive terms that gave flavor and body to Rhys and Silas’ encounters. The descriptive elements really set these characters apart giving me a strong connection to them. For those looking to read a different type of romantic encounter I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book.

I sincerely thank Loose Id for providing me with and ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I read the short 'Slow Waltz' first and loved meeting Silas and Rhys and was keen to go back and find out about their beginnings.

Stuck on a cruise ship with the soulless doesn't sound like much fun, but fortunately for us, this pair find LOTS of time to explore their mutual attraction. And that my friends, is ultra hot.

THe action aspect is very tense and these boys don't breeze through the encounters easily. Each fight is to-the-death and their success is hard fought. I liked that.

There could be more. Many questions still remain unanswered.

I don't read a lot of paranormal books, but this one sounded interesting, so I figured, why not! I did enjoy it :)

What would it be like to be going along your (not as happy as it could be) life only to find out that not only is your father not your father, but that fae and vampires and angels exist? And not only that, but that you're not quite as human as you always thought? That would be trippy.

Of course, Rhys doesn't have a lot of time to really digest any of this before he is fighting for his life, as well as Silas'. And the chemistry between Rhys and Silas? Off the charts hot. Very nearly love at first sight, though it's likely more to do with their elemental compatibility. Either way, it is delicious.

This is the first book by this author I have read and I like her writing style. I am looking forward to reading more.

This story was so much better than I anticipated from the blurb. The MCs were the perfect blend of complementary personalities: Silas, a fae and the man he meets on board a transatlantic cruise, Rhys, who turns out to be a quarter--a child born to a human and a half-fae.

If you like sex scenes that are super hot and very well done, this book is for you. I am at the point in my reading where after the first one or two, I'm ready to move on to the story. So though I hate to say it, I skimmed most of them. However, there's a lot of substance to this story, so even skimming the sex scenes, it took a while to finish the story. And the more I read, the more I wanted to read.

There's vampires, faes, angels, quarter faes and more. There's also some pretty explicit gory scenes when Silas and Rhys clash with the vampires, one of whom held Silas prisoner long ago. The author made the story complex, yet easy to follow, and it certainly appeared that there was no way out, but of course, authors do that to us all the time. In this case, the ending was unexpected, but certainly believable and I can really say that I totally enjoyed this story and recommend it to those who love a good paranormal action adventure.

More! I want more! *begs, pleads, whimpers* I loved everything about this book. Everything. And that makes me a liar for every time I’ve said I don’t really do insta-love. It doesn’t get more insta-love than this but still, I loved every second of it, every word. Anna Zabo made it work!

The blurb is technically accurate but somehow it doesn’t do Close Quarter justice. This book is intense! Hot and steamy, visceral yet romantic. It has rendered me a blathering fool, just read it!

Whether you’re a fan of paranormal romance or not, I highly recommend Close Quarter.

ETA: Seeing as a dear friend has dnf’d, I realize I may have been a bit overzealous in my enthusiasm *cringing laugh* I’m not backing down from my love for it but will admit my love is definitely colored by my enjoyment of this kind of paranormal. Good LGBTQIA+ paranormal gives me life, when I find it, I feel giddy and refreshed. And perhaps overenthusiastic in my praise.

Also ETA: I should probably mention that Close Quarter can get a bit gory and brutal at times. If those things are off putting to you, this may not work for you.

I really did like this book. It was a great, interesting read and it kept me entertained. It started off strong, and built into a book that I could enjoy without too much trouble. I loved the MC's. Together they were amazing. Apart they made me want to bang their heads together, but that is a good thing.

It was a different book for me. The cruise ship mixed with paranormal fantasy has not been done a lot before. I liked that and enjoyed seeing the two MC's meet and Rhys discovering his heritage. That did kind of throw me for a second, but once I got into it I was able to think, yeah, that makes sense.

The one thing that made me stop was I normally don't read those kinds of books, but this one was different. That is something that warmed my heart. I was glad he could move on, and understand things as they were.

The book could be a bit confusing at times, but I would say it's well worth a read. You might love it, you might hate it. But one thing is for certain, I really, really enjoyed it!

Review to come on Just Love. ARC received in exchange for honest and fair review.

I don’t read a lot of paranormal romance but I found Close Quarter to be a sexy and entertaining read – up to a point. I enjoyed the fae, vampire and mythical aspects of the story very much, in particular Silas’ backstory and Rhys’ gradual awakening – in every sense – to this other world. I thought the worldbuilding was smooth and that the plot was not without surprises. The main characters were pretty distinct despite minimal development and there’s no denying that the chemistry between Rhys and Silas was off the charts.

The characters kicked off their ocean voyage with a bang and the heat level remained intense for the rest of the cruise. I thought the sex scenes were incredibly hot, although it did get repetitious with every single action and reaction documented on page from start to finish every time they got it on. I also thought some of the scenes were a bit farfetched considering the amount of danger they were in, with enemies lurking – often literally – around every corner. However, one thing in particular that I enjoyed about their physical connection was the power exchange that occurred between Rhys and Silas, which was closely tied to the fae elements in play; it definitely added an extra spark to those scenes and the story as a whole.

The book moved at a pretty fast pace and drew me in quite easily. However I stumbled in the final third and had a difficult time getting back into the groove from there on out. Part of it was due to the monotony that began to set in despite all the action going on (they were aboard an ocean liner after all, and I guess there’s only so many times you can have sex and kill vampires). But part of the problem was simply because… I kept getting confused. I would be fully engaged in a particular scene, and then a minute later a character said or did something in such a way that I felt as if I was not in on a joke or had somehow missed something important. It happened often enough after a certain point that it felt as if the author assumed I knew the characters or the story as well as they did, so didn’t bother with nuance or explanations. It wasn’t a huge thing like a glaringly obvious plot hole, but it happened enough that I started to get annoyed.

It’s never a good thing ending a book on a frustrated note, especially when I thoroughly enjoyed most of it. Close Quarters would’ve been a solid 4-star read if some parts hadn’t left me completely at sea. It’s honestly difficult to say if it’s just a me thing so if you’re into paranormal romance, perhaps give this one a try and let me know.

The world building was interesting, I thought, Rhys is on a cruise trying to get away from the spotlight, his mother just died and left him oogles of money, money he got from his father , but see, he thought he had known who his father was, but obviously he didn't.
Now, that part is important, because his real father was half Fae which makes him a Quarter.
I'm not going to get into all of it, it's a little too much to explain in a few sentences, but Rhys life is about to change forever since his Fae heritage comes to the forefront when he meets Silvas. Silvas works for the Messangers ( aka Angels) killing Vampires, he's been doing it for about 2000 years, he's weary and alone and a bit jaded, but Rhys rocks his world.
There is a lot of action, history, world building and sex in this book and even if it only covers about a week in time it feels a lot longer. I have a feeling we might get another book with these two, or at least maybe Vasil's story, which I would like to read.

This was different. I liked it :) I loved Rhys! There were times I really liked Silas, too, but I thought he was a shit-tastic older Fae. Seemed to me, someone got the jump on him too many times and left Rhys to fend for himself. I wanted Silas to be stronger, but not arrogantly so. But then this is where Rhys came in and showed his strength. The two of them together? Amazing!

I kept seeing this around, but it never really grabbed me. Now, I am kicking myself for waiting so long. I hope there will be more to come for Rhys and Silas, perhaps life off of the ship?

I don't even LIKE paranormal!

I loved this! So much fun. Swords and sex, what could be better? I did read paranormal and fantasy years ago. I'm of the Anne Rice generation. But I loved Ms. Zabo's other books. Reading the blurb for this one, I thought "What the hell" and I'm so glad I did. Very interesting characters and the whole insta-love thing was right for this story. Hidden powers and mysterious connections, surprising allies and the power of love over evil, done just right.

4/5 Stars for Close Quarter. Plot wise, this book had me sitting on the edge of my seat from page 1 to page 253, even though some of the execution had me feeling a little bit meh.

Rhys went on a transatlantic cruise following the death of his mother, just to get some fresh air and get himself put back together. He needed some time and space to think and heal on the down low. That is, until he runs right into Silas and ends up spilling drinks everywhere. The romance that ensues between these two is fast and dirty. Silas is very forward and unapologetic in what, when, and how he gets the things he wants.

But this book really throws you for a loop when you find out Silas is a forest fae and he's on the cruise to hunt for vampires. He's hunting vampires. On a cruise. Like, what? The whole situation seemed a little strange to me, even though it was explained well and it made sense in context, but if you just sit back for a second and think about it, it just seems a little strange. I was making scrunchy huh? faces all the way through the book.

However, this book was more than just the romance between Silas and Rhys. There was plot beyond the romance, which doesn't usually happen to this degree in most m/m romance novels. Zabo really had her eyes on the gold and just went for it, which I really appreciated. This book brought a whole new take on vampires and fantasy creatures and I would highly recommend it if you're interested in fantasy m/m romance.

This was my first book by Anna Zabo, and I will definitely be coming back for more. All in all, it was a solid read with well developed characters and an adventurous plot. Well done, Zabo.

This one was a lot of fun! I've only read one other book from Anna Zabo before, but this one was much different being a paranormal romance. Zabo did a great job creating this fun world with fae and vampires and angels, and I can't wait to read more in this series!

There are so many things I really enjoyed about Close Quarter. First of all, These two had explosive chemistry. Any time they were around each other, they couldn't keep their thoughts or hands off of each other. There are quite a few steamy scenes and I loved every one of them. lol! That being said, I thought some of the steamy scenes were a little unbelievable: the ones that occurred directly after they had just encountered some form of danger or another. I don't feel like that would be the first thing on my mind in that moment. Maybe I'm wrong and the adrenaline would kick in and make me want to turn things hot and heavy, but I don't know, I feel like I would be worrying if I was safe first. The author did do a really great job of having a good balance between steamy scenes and action tho.

Another thing I really loved was Anna Zabo's world building. It never felt like a huge info dump, but I still felt like I learned a lot about fae, vampire/soulless, and even the Messengers/angels. It was all so interesting to me and I found myself wanting to know more and more. I loved the way Silas was able to draw energy from the living plants around him. I really loved the "surprise" was handled with Rhy's character as well. This entire book takes place on a cruise ship, so I was worried about that becoming boring but it never did. That being said, I am really curious as to how everything is going to work out with the other fae once they get off of the ship.

There was a lot of action packed into the pages too. Not only is Silas a forest fae but he's also aboard the ship to hunt vampires, and there's also a little more to Rhys than they both originally expected. I had trouble putting this one down, and actually ended up reading it in one sitting because I needed to know what happened. There are still a few things left unanswered at the end of this book but I believe they will be covered in the following books in the series. I would have given this one a 5 star rating if a more of my questions would have felt answered towards the end. I can't really write what my questions were because I don't want to give too much away. I need book #2 in my life asap!!

Ok, let's see... this was on sale over the Halloween, blurb piqued my curiosity so there I was ready to buy it, then it turns out I already own it #whathappenswhenyourkindleshelfisoutofcontrol

Mood reader that I am, I figured if the blurb hooked me in, I might as well start reading it and put an itty bitty miniscule dent at least on my TBR...

I liked it enough. It's about faes and soulless creatures and being "mated" (can I use that term if they're not shifters? or is it fated? faeted? teehee) and fighting and humping, lots of humping, eep! A breeze touches their skin and boom, they're hard for each other, ready to have at it. If they're not fighting, they're boning, and I suppose falling in love along the way.

Everything was happening fast. Falling for each other, getting to the enemies, zoom, zoom... all in a span of, what, 3 days, I think, zoinks!

But you know what, no matter, I kept reading. I wanted to know what happens next. Rhys was funny, cheeky and brash, the opposite of Silas and exactly what Silas needed. Silas had his moments too. Their conversations were witty. Big selling point for me. And yes, they had their hot moments, but of course;) And I suppose I enjoyed enough the flow of the story, thanks to a decent world building.

This is a first Anna read for me, won't be the last, for what it's worth. And just realizing that there's a companion novella to this, which funny enough I also just realized that I already own, I think I may just pick it up...

I enjoyed this a lot!!!

Content warnings include: graphic violence and injury, sex on-page, death, mentions of: past abuse and torture, loss of family and loved ones, homophobia.

This was a great read with a fresh and interesting take on fae. The setting on a transatlantic cruiser made it even more interesting.
I loved the dynamic between Rhys and Silas, defying typical roles and depicting them as real complex people. I also enjoyed how Rhys, the previously normal human finding himself in the midst of a supernatural war, isn't at all passive or afraid or hides behind Silas. Instead he takes matters in his own hand and has a very proactive role in the plot.

The romance was very much insta-love, with less than a day passing until the two profess their love, but it somehow really worked amazingly well here.

There is more than enough material for a whole series: be it just a continuation of what happens to Rhys and Silas when the ship reaches the shore, or a spin-off about Vasil that is teased in the epilogue.
I'm really hoping there will be a sequel someday, because I'd loooove to read more and I definitely want to know how Silas and Rhys will handle the courts, what's up with Rhys's father, and all the other unanswered questions.
Despit this Close Quarters has a satisfying ending and is a great read on its own.

Excellent prose, characters and sizzle just didn’t do it for me

I’m a sucker for fae stories, and I found the characters in this story to be compelling, their hook-ups very nicely heated, and some of the prose to flow well. However, overall it didn’t quite work for me (although a surprise at the climax was a nice touch that almost pushed my enjoyment higher). Even though the protagonists and their sizzle were entracing, their very quick connection didn’t quite work for me (and I normally can easily roll with “instant” mate and paranormal connections), and the drip-drip-drip of the threats left me unfulfilled (why didn’t the bad guy just take them out the multiple chances he/they seemed to have over time, rather than being picked off one-by-one).

Zabo's Twisted Wishes series (first book Syncopation) is amazing, but now that it's over ~sob~ I wanted to dip into their backlist. The first book I came up with was Close Quarter, a paranormal m/m romance set on a cruise ship.

I have to admit, I wasn't exactly sold by the jacket copy. Fae and vampires on a cruise ship? But Zabo does a good job of introducing us to the characters and slowly building out the world. We learn about fae and vampires (called soulless) along with Rhys and while there aren't many high level 'why the world is like this' answers, I don't expect that in the first book of a series.

I'm a fan of the relationship because, thanks to some paranormal handwaving, it's based on an intimate knowledge of each other. There's some great banter, too.

"You're so damn young. Beautiful. Like a spring morning."
"What, cold, foggy, and damp?"
Silas shifted on the tub's edge, turned his hand to capture Rhys's fingers. "Warm and occasionally dense. But full of promise."

As hinted in the same jacket copy, the sex starts early and happens often. I love steaminess in my romance, and a bunch of the sex scenes help us understand Rhys and Silas' relationship and how it evolves. At the same time, I think there's too many of them. Whenever they finish fighting a baddie it's back to the cabin for sex. At times it feels like stalling, waiting for night to fall so they can get back to killing soulless.

While the plot is fine it needed a little more. I would expect a 262 page book to have a solid subplot, but beyond Rhys wondering about his family we come up short. Part of that is because there are precious few characters - beside good guys Rhys and Silas we have the Big Bad, his cookie cutter lackies, and a waiter on the cruise ship. That's it.

I would argue that this book could be edited down into a 150 novella and made amazing. As is it's still a fun read and I would continue the series, but Close Quarter was written in 2012 and there still isn't a sequel. Ah, well. I'm looking forward to moving on to Zabo's contemporaries.

Fae, vampires, angels, magical swords - I should have loved this one but I had a very hard time getting into it and staying with it. The opening scene didn't help for me - Silas is an ass to Rhys and yet they have stranger sex and that just isn't my cup of tea. But I persisted and I'm not sure why. The characters were interesting and the world was interesting but between the constant sex scenes and the repetitive plot (vampires hurt Silas, Rhys is somehow able to drive them off and then heal Silas and then again and again) I got bored. I ended up putting it down a few times and reading something else before I'd come back to it. So this series is going to be a no for me.

Very enjoyable m/m paranormal erotic romance. Characters were fun and relatable, particularly Rhys. And I found the worldbuilding to be first rate. I can't wait to read more from this author, and I hope that this will be the first in a series. I'd love to see Vasil get a book. :)

What a blend of supernatural. Take a bit of fae mix with evil vampires and oh yes lots of suspense. You get a marvelous first novel. Rhys is an interesting blend of determination and awakening power. Silas is old world weary, together they make a very good story. I hope Vasily has a story too.

Well this one went straight for the jugular – no pun intended!

I can’t believe I’ve never read this before – it is all kinds of hotness combined with evil vampires, the fae, Messengers and all crammed into a speedy, steamy read! All kinds of yummy! Silas sounded divine – tortured yet strong, with trauma in his past and control issues in his present. Rhys sounded like he’d really got the tough end of the stick in the recent past, and things didn’t seem to be looking up in his present.

The way they met wasn’t ideal, but the chemistry between them was absolutely incendiary from the get-go, and Silas’ method of getting his own back was devastatingly effective. And only then do we start getting into vampires, fae, quarters and halfs – it was fabulous! I admit, I read this in one sitting – I was taking a break from Cinnamon Roll but I will definitely be going back to finish that and probably leaving a review.

Possibly too much sex for some people, and there were occasions where I was questioning just how old Silas was because he was reacting to things like a youth when he should have known better. But ultimately I forgave him because he had been through so much! Freaking loved it and hope that there will be more in the future although probably not because this is from 2017.
