“If you ever wanted to know about St. Louis, MO, this will open up a whole lot of interesting points for you.” - Reader Review
I really like the facts and interesting details. But I really do not like the way this book is organized, the distracting font, this mis-use of bold, italics, and super-sized fonts, etc. all of that combined took some of the sincerity out of it. It felt more like a volume in a Ripleys Believe It Or Not series, which, sadly, is just too hard to take seriously.
I like St. Louis but I’m not a big fan of Charlie Brennan. Other than that I enjoyed the book. Some interesting stories but at times I could have used more. I will say that it’s a shame that page 108 talks about Forest park honoring both sides of one war. The only place in the USA to do so. So you have a monument to the soldiers of the south during the Civil war. The Confederate states. It looks like a nice monument. Sadly it has been removed and with that not only erasing history but also a place where both the North and South were honored.
Charlie Brennan, has a radio talk show here in ST. Louis on KMOX radio, Charlie is from Ohio, I beleive. But when he came to Saint Louis, he became passionate about this city. Charlie is co author of Walking Historic Downtown Saint Louis,he has also penned Here's Where: A Guide to Illustrious ST. Louis. Charlie may have grown up in Ohio but when he came here he became a ST. Louisianian. His most recent book is titled AMAZING ST. LOUIS 250 years of of great tales and curiosities. In this small tome of 262 pages you will discover many ties to Saint Louis you never knew about for instance Jack the Ripper, Darth Vader, the first mobile phone, the first gas station, the first cocktail party in the United States, the first skyscraper, the serenity prayer, Listerine, the little known Lincoln duel, 7Up a native Saint Louisianian, the birthplace of Puffed Rice and more. You will learn all of this an than some.Pick up this book put it in your throne room it's great place to read it, plus when your friends come by they just might learn something about this great city That I live in.
If you are looking for a quick read featuring St. Louis trivia, this is a good choice. I was put off by the conversational style, and some of the anecdotes are not book-worthy. Overall, you will get your money's worth and then some.
My mom gave me this book in honor of St. Louis's anniversary this year. While some of the facts were very interesting, others were a bit of a stretch. (Saying that Arthur Ashe is from St. Louis when he completed a year of high school at Sumner is a bit of an exaggeration.)
