Throughout history, there have been certain figures who have stood the test of time and had an enduring impact on the church at large. One such person was the famed Welsh preacher Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. In this carefully curated collection of sermons, contemporary readers are introduced to one of the most influential pastors of the 20th century. Compiled and expertly edited by his daughter and grandson, this powerful anthology will help you learn from “the Doctor’s” prophetic preaching―even today.
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones was strongly opposed to Liberal Christianity, which had become a part of many Christian denominations; he regarded it as aberrant. He disagreed with the broad church approach and encouraged evangelical Christians (particularly Anglicans) to leave their existing denominations. He believed that true Christian fellowship was possible only amongst those who shared common convictions regarding the nature of the faith.
This collection of sermons from the Doctor provides a great overview of both the content and style of his preaching. I read it as part of my morning time and found it greatly encouraging and enriching.
5 stars for the sermons which are excellent. 3 stars for the sermon introductions by the editors which I found annoying. All I want is to have the context of the time the message was preached. I don’t need commentary on reformed theology, on Holy Spirit controversies or several mentions to what the church needs today. I would have liked this more if the editors had been less noticeable in their introductions. They induced several eye rolls from me, which the sermons themselves never did.
First time listening to his sermons. I definitely appreciate his logic and focus on Christ. We need more preachers who have this instinct, and it's one I want to continually develop and mature as well. I valued these sermons. However, may be because I listened to someone else reading them, or maybe because of his style, structural, or flow of his sermons, they often seemed like a flowing river that you know where you were, but you didn't know where you were going or from where you came.
Appreciated greatly the sermons chosen and the thought that went behind leaving some others out. Great to see how the Dr. Worked through a sermon flow and application. Always grace of God emphasis all the way through.
A refreshing read that reveals Lloyd-Jones' love for the our Lord Jesus Christ, His Word and His people. The wide range of subject matter the editors (Elizabeth & Christopher Catherwood) selected gives the reader a good idea of the Doctor's thoughts on contemporary issues. The idea of reading sermon manuscripts may seem cumbersome to some, but they are not technical as in a theological study. The sermons are, as they should be, pastoral and biblical, and they address the matters of the heart, making them relevant for every age.
