More and more people, including teens, are discovering the pleasures and rewards of keeping honeybees. In addition to the sweet honey they produce, bees are critical for pollinating many plants and food crops. In this entertaining and enlightening title, the author first provides general information about bees and how honeybee societies work. A how-to guide on the art of beekeeping follows, with information on gathering the necessary clothing and equipment, setting up and caring for a hive, and harvesting honey. Threats to honeybee health and survival, which have become an important environmental issue, are also addressed. After a taste of this fascinating hobby, teens can decide if they're ready to enter the world of beekeeping!
I give it 3 stars, but I am not the target audience. In the back of my mind I think I would like to try (or at least learn more about) beekeeping. Just one of my more recent day dreams. I saw this short book and figured it would be a quick introduction. The subtitle indicates it is for teens, but I doubt a 13 + year old would care. Target more for the 11-12 group.
Since I know nothing about beekeeping, perhaps it is unfair of me to try reviewing this book. It was too light on facts. It did not even inspire me to want to know more. I need to get more serious in my research. Perhaps even take a class. I guess I just want to get my hands dirty enough to build my own hive. But at least this book reminds me to be courteous to my neighbors and check with them first. That could have been a small disaster.
