When Laura Kingston starts a new job at the remote Heights Hotel, she's hoping for a fresh start. Soon, however, she discovers that the hotel is haunted by a tragic past. Five years ago, a woman vanished, and now the Bannister family is being torn apart by guilt, fear and intrigue.
Elizabeth Bannister was supposed to signal a bright future for the family. Instead, she was torn apart by two brothers who were unable to satisfy their lust for power. Did Elizabeth simply run away from the hotel, or are her remains buried somewhere nearby? And what is the horrific truth that binds Laura and Elizabeth together forever?
Other People's Bodies is a romantic thriller about love, betrayal and control, and about two women whose lives are torn apart by a lie that echoes through the years.
Amy Cross writes novels and short stories in a number of genres, mainly horror, paranormal and fantasy. Books include The Farm, Annie's Room, The Island, Eli's Town and Asylum.
The first of this author's stories I read was great but let down by a lack of editing. This one is horrendous in that department and, good story or not I'm not sticking with it this time. A shame as her stories clearly appeal to me in order to download them in the first place. My issue with this one was she couldn't make up her mind whether she was writing in the first person or not but it was getting mixed up in the SAME sentences !! It made for confusing reading....I give you "I walk quickly across the carpark making sure to carry a repectable gait and posture, just in case anyone happens to be watching her from a window..." or "I can't help wondering if he might bend me over his knee and give me a caning if she gives a wrong answer"...and finally "his yellowing eyes stare at me implacably, almost as if he's challenging her to meet his gaze".....I mean, it's a bonkers way of writing !!! She's gone for Americanised spelling again with this story, too, which always annoys me in a book set here in the UK. However, I can't believe nobody else reading it hasn't remarked on the first/third person issue, though !!
First paragraph: "No!" she screamed, pushing him to the ground and running off across the dark car park. Stumbling back to his feet, he tried to catch sight of her. For a moment, he saw a brief flash of her naked, bruised body racing through the moonlight, and then she was gone. Cursing his luck, the man started limping after her. He knew there was no way he could catch up to her on sheer pace alone, but at the same time he couldn't stop trying. Out here, so close to the cliff edge and with the moon mostly hidden by dark clouds, he was filled with determination. After everything that had happened, he knew he couldn't let her go so easily.
I do enjoy this author's stories, and this one was cleverly twisted.
Split between Laura's and Elizabeth's point of view, this psychological thriller hooked me from the start, even if these characters were annoying at times. As for Luke and Edward...read it to find out.
Although I love the easy writing and fast-paced style, it was shame about the numerous typos and slips between first and third person. I also wonder why a British author whose stories are set in Britain, sometimes uses American phrases, words and spelling.
However, I love these imaginative tales and recommend this to lovers of thriller /horror stories.
This was quite a good story, slightly marred by typos and editing errors, but this didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the book. Towards the end of the story we entered the realms of bizarre fantasy as all the various threads came together. This resulted in an unbelievable conclusion. Still, the overall story wasn't bad.
Great book yet again by Any Cross. Laura Kingston arrives at The Heights Hotel for an interview. She gets the position. The Hotel is in bad shape and needs to be brought into the 21st century. It's owned by the Bannister's, Edward Luke and old man Victor. There's something strange about the family and Laura finds herself in over her head. Nobody mentions Elizabeth but she is a dirty secret between the brother's. I really enjoyed it. A few editing issues but didn't take away my enjoyment. Love Amy's books they are always interesting and different. Nice work Amy📕👍
This story was excellent and I so wanted to give it 5 stars, but somewhere along the line Cross swapped POV's, which I think was for the best, but not everything got changed. I kept coming across lines like, "I told herself". The main character in one timeline is referred to as 'I' in one paragraph then 'she' in the next. Little editing errors I can ignore, but this ripped me from the story each time I had to figure out what was going on.
The story itself was 3 stars-but I cannot in good conscious give this book anything more than one. It’s incredibly apparent that nobody even tried to edit this novel. First and third person in the same sentence, a sentence about Luke but then keeps saying she until you finally realize its about Rachel not Luke, and just a ton of errors. Super disappointing.
The story took a while to come together Many references to how the plot unfolds are Made throughout the chapters and everything comes Together at the grand finally. Sadly there are a number Of chapters that appear just to fill the book as nothing Much happens. Once you start this book you will have to finish It
Could not put this book down if there was more stars to give I would score it higher. Amy never ceases to amaze me with her incredible writing skills,I would recommend this book to any avid reader.
I really enjoyed the story, but the author couldn't decide if the books was in first person or third person view. It was very frustrating to read at times. Would be awesome if she would fix the grammatical errors in this book.
So this is the first of the author's books that I've read and I'm blown away. The pace is fast and the twist is great. I was from the first chapter. Highly recommend!
Full of suspense. The reader is kept in the dark for the bulk of the story. My mind was busy guessing about 'what was really going on?' as each new clue was given.
I enjoyed the frequent mind-blowing twists. I will admit that I never seen the ending coming.
Having said that, in its current state, this book has a couple of serious editorial flaws which prevented me from giving it five stars.
Cautionary comment: This book contains highly graphic content (violence, blood shed, cruelty, Strong language, on-page sex). Young readers and those sensitive to graphic content would be advised to skip this book.
