Just read Stephen King's On Writing instead. The advice is the same, and King is endlessly more inspiring than this glorified list of bullet points.
To be fair, many people can probably find some security in Scott's Writing Habit Mastery. The clear, clean language convinces the reader that truly, everyone can write a book, as long as you follow the instructions laid out in front of us. Write those words, get that amount of words down on paper, this book quietly chants. It doesn't matter if it's crap, just write write write write...
And yes, to a certain extent Scott is right. One of the things that holds aspiring writers back is the perceived lack of time, and the overwhelming size of a project. Taking it chunks at a time really helps with motivation.
However, I think writing is more than what this book paints it as. It is more than having a nice outline and just hammering out those arbitrary 2,000 words every single day. If we all follow Scott's advice (assuming that we can), we would all have something. But that doesn't make good writing.
I'm not one of those people who thinks talent is inherent. As Stephen King writes, writing is most definitely a craft, and in order to become proficient one has to exercise. To try and try and improve until it becomes the best we can make it. There is no learning in Writing Habit Mastery - it barely even acknowledges that 2,000 words can be pretty fucking daunting for beginning writers. As much as every person is different, every writing style is different, and I feel like some people's creativity would be squashed with a stick if shoehorned into Scott's method. I assume the book is not meant as a one-size-fits-all solution, but it leaves very little leeway to adapt these techniques if you work differently.
What I look for in books on writing is inspiration to write, and interesting research. The facts in Writing Habit Mastery were ones I was already familiar with, and it fell flat on the inspiration front. Writing can be a source of joy and despair and elation and frustration - but in this case, it mainly seems dull.
