About the author

Archibald Joseph Cronin was a Scottish novelist, dramatist, and non-fiction writer who was one of the most renowned storytellers of the twentieth century. His best-known works are The Citadel and The Keys of the Kingdom, both of which were made into Oscar-nominated films. He also created the Dr. Finlay character, the hero of a series of stories that served as the basis for the long-running BBC television and radio series entitled Dr. Finlay's Casebook.

Наслаждава се на охолен живот и се развлича както намери за добре. Но случайно дочуто име го връща към едно минало, което е мислил за безвъзвратно забравено. И входът към бездната се оказва широко отворен…

Кронин е майстор, хареса ми много и тази негова книга!

While reading this book I kept thinking about what the author chose to do with the plot, what he had the characters do. He is the creator of the story, and he can have the characters do whatever he wants. Consider the wide span of possibilities. Cronin alternates between suspense, action and love scenes, throwing in historical and cultural tidbits and descriptions of nature, both storms and scenery of evocative beauty. I like the blend of the components. I like how he weaves together the elements of the story. I find the characters and the events believable. He puts in the right details

As the story reaches its end, you need to know how the central character will act and how the story will conclude. Did I guess how it would end? No! Do I think the ending is believable? Yes!

I am praising the author’s character portrayals! With the passage of years, the central male character falls in love with three women. Each are very different. That he is carried away by their respective charms is influenced by his age and his overall personality, which we come to know well. All the threads come together. This is a captivating story that entertains, teaches and holds our attention all the way through.

The topics covered are the lure of art and food and “the good life” made available through money, missionary work in Africa, psychotic behavior, the need for love and control over one’s own destiny. Also, the feasibility of a search for redemption.

Stephen Jack reads the audiobook. The recording is old fashioned; it reads as a tape on books. The reading is not overly dramatized, but Jack’s intonations fit well the different characters. Each one sounds as they should sound. He adeptly alters their accents—Scottish, German and American for example. For me, the narration is worth four stars.

The author makes each character b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e! It is an enjoyment to slip into the world he creates. I will read all that I can get by this author!

Потворно. Чуттєво. Реалістично. Красиво. Огидно. Неправильно.
Це історія, яка змусить вас відчувати. Тут немає хороших чи поганих героїв, це просто люди зі своїми недоліками, слабкостями і рішеннями, за наслідки яких їм доводиться відповідати (або ні).

Знаєте, що мені тут сподобалось найбільше? Те, що протягом всієї книги герої думають про свої рішення, аналізують їх і роблять ті ж самі висновки, які робиш у своїй голові ти, коли читаєш. Вони усвідомлюють самих себе такими, якими вони насправді є.

Я декілька днів після завершення цієї книги не починала читати наступну, бо мене не відпускали емоції.

Я з самого початку не очікувала тут щасливого кінця, бо розуміла, що він тут фактично неможливий.
Я не можу сказати, що тут дуже оригінальний сюжет, бо всі повороти легко читаються. Але саме в цьому і суть - герої в цій книзі чинять точно так само, як і люди в реальному житті, все закономірно, все правильно у своїй неправильності.

Не знам дали не съм малко твърде критична към тази книга, може би очакването ми е вдигнало малко летвата.
За първи път чета книга, в която главният герой ми е антипатичен от самото начало и до края това не се променя. Трудно е да си избереш и да си изградиш такъв протагонист, затова - шапка на Кронин, наистина майсторски изграден образ. Но не липсата на симпатия беше проблемът. Книгата е вълнуваща, изгълтах я доста бързо, в някакви моменти просто не можех да спра да чета... и най-голямото разочарование идва от това, че читателят е винаги една крачка напред, всяка развръзка се предусеща, преживях само един шок измежду страниците на книгата, който почти ме разрева в трамвая. В един момент имаш чувстовото, че единственото, което четеш, са имена на храни и забележителности. И все пак ме остави с усещането, че от историята е спестено нещо, което можеше да я въздигне на едно по-високо ниво.
Все пак държа да отбележа, че историята наистина те подема в своя вихър и успешно изключва целия останал свят наоколо. Героят на Кронин е болезнено реален и наистина майсторски изпипан. Препоръчвам книгата за приятно зимно четиво с топла напитка.

Четох с интерес тази книга, макар определени моменти да ми идваха напрягащи – историите на Кронин винаги са пропити с човешка драма, сложни отношения, тежки съдби, но стилът му на писане е наистина забележителен. Майстор е на отблъскващите мъжки персонажи шотландският автор – след Джеймс Броуди от „Замъкът на шапкаря“, Дейвид Мъри се нарежда на второ място сред най-неприятните герои, които съм „срещала“ сред страниците.

Oсновна в романа е темата за предателството – към жените, които го обичат и на които обещава илюзорно бъдеще, към религията, към самия него. Воден от собствения си интерес и капризи, с вечна склонност да избира най-изгодния път за себе си, Мъри наранява и разочарова. Изкусно бяга от отговорност и неблагоприятните последствия след направените избори. Той осъзнава, че целият му живот е една измама, а чувстовто за вина се оказва унищожително, което води и до логичния му край...

В началото и финала на книгата, алегоричната стойност на Дървото на Юда – най-ценният екземпляр в градината на Мъри, толкова великолепно и високо, с бухнала корона от красиви виолетови цветове, но наричано и „дървото на прокълнатите“, придав�� особена символика и смисъл, рамкирайки историята.

У центрі твору Дейвід Морей - заможний чоловік середніх років, що відійшов від справ і замешкав у Швейцарії, насолоджуючись життям. Втім помилки минулого, зраджене кохання не дають йому спокою. У прагненні спокутувати гріхи юності, він їде на батьківщину. Далі вступає у силу відома приказка про добрі наміри, що прокладають дорогу до пекла.

З цією книгою я пережила таку шалену круговерть емоцій, що й словами не передати!

Спочатку мені було нудно. Коли з'явилася Мері - стало цікаво. Історія навіть почала здаватися затишною. Але я чекала на ніж у спину і дочекалася. Після того, як Дейвід вирішив укласти вигідний шлюб, мене вибішувала і книга, і персонаж. Наївність і довірливість Каті вражала. Підступність Фріди люто дратувала. Я не могла дочекатися, коли перегорну останню сторінку, щоб покінчити з цим мракобіссям, а перегорнувши, зрозуміла, що переді мною - один з найкращих романів, які я читала.

Для мене це книга про чоловіка який все своє свідоме життя робив один неправильний вибір за іншим, і наче ти й маєш успіх і гроші.
Але ти не маєш головного це щастя, люблячої родини.
І всі жінки яких він наче б то кохав, були зламані ним же.
Книга яка не має щасливого фіналу, але дає багато їжі для роздумів про ті рішення яки ми приймаємо у своєму житті і як це впливає на долі інших людей.

A must read. Have lent to friends. This is a fictional tale where a man keeps meaning to follow his heart but is too ambitious and comfort seeking.

The main character is a weakling and fails miserably at having any real backbone or moral compass. Everything we despise about human nature (potentially to some degree within us all).

Despite his flaws he still has a few chances throughout the book for something true in life...

Enjoyable for alot of reasons.... The journey he takes is interesting and the explanation for the book's title is one of the books easily unnoticed but a profound highlight. The author and his ideas on morality and what matter in life are revealed throughout the book along wit the mechanics of how one easily deviates are laid out in the book.

It shows ultimately what appear to be small choices having a lifetime of meaning.

The writer's other book - A Pocked Full of Rye, has a main character that faces more difficult situation's and has the moral character that a reader would want. IMO it wasn't nearly as compelling as, but few books are. Although one friend enjoyed it more.

The title is a spoiler: a man betrays his heart for shallow worldly satisfactions, to find he can’t live with the shame.

Moray, the tragic protagonist, also betrays his calling of medicine; he’s slippery (like his namesake), and we spend most of this gripping novel more or less inside his head. Though a compelling writer, Cronin isn’t always consistent with his chosen point of view. We’re constantly privy to Moray’s thoughts, via close third person, but at times random details of his external appearance intrude. And the few, sudden switches of perspective – to whichever love interest, the butler etc. – are all the more jarring for their infrequency. A convenience for the sake of conveying the story, it feels oddly like cheating; which is at least apt for the theme.

What elevates this morality tale about flawed and seldom likable characters is its uncompromising contrasting of the path of self-indulgence and that of self-negating charity. Ultimately, Moray finds himself torn between the two and, due to a long history of bad habits, doomed – even damned – whichever he chooses.

От наче і гарно було, і якісно і виписано. А читати більше Кроніна не хочеться 🙄 якось занадто порожньо, занадто лінійно, картина фарбами кількох психотипів — ну ок.

Може, треба було принципово в інший настрій читати, або не брати Кроніна одразу після оповідань дала, бо після них Юдине дерево читалось геть як наступне оповідання Дала, яке просто затягнули на зайвих 300 сторінок

David Moray was orphaned and felt himself at a disadvantage. By scrimping and studying he put himself through medical school in order to become "somebody". A good head on his shoulders put his foot in the door but it was charm and charisma that pulled him through.

But sometimes enough is not enough; and even when one is happy there's the thought that one could be happier. This was David's problem.

This story is about David Moray and the four women in his life. It's not a happy story. But it's a great character study of a potentially great man's downfall.

Well worth a read. Cronin is such an honest, real writer. His characters breathe.

Projekta "Izlasīt visu Kroninu" kārtēja grāmata. Kronina grāmatas var patikt vai nepatikt, bet vienaldzīgo nebūs. Tā arī es, lasot šo grāmatu, kaut kur pazudu emocijās. Taču, ja pēc izlasīšanas ar sievu izraisās diskusija pāris dienu garumā, tad jādomā , ka grāmta ir laba. Par Kronina stāstnieka talantu vairs neatkārtošos, valoda ir raita, sižets aizrauj jau 5. lapaspusē, lasās ļoti ātri.
Grāmatas stāsts par jaunu ārstu un tā centieniem atrast dzīvē to pareizo ceļu uz laimi. Daba viņu ir apveltījusi ar daiļu izskatu, pievilcīgu smaidu un pietiekošu prātu. Tas dzīvē ļauj atvērt daudzas durvis un izklāt paklājus uz cilvēku sirdīm. Taču daba aizmirsusi jaunajam ārstam Deividam Morejam iedot mugurkaulu un raksturu. Un regulāri Deivids no divām izvēlēm izvēlas to vieglāko, bet ne pareizāko. Sākotnēji pat liekas, ka galvenā varoņa rīcība ir apsveicama, pareiza un nav pat pārdomu vērta. Taču nākas redzēt kā neliela neizlēmība un ļaušanās straumei noved pie traģiskām sekām.

Endrjū ir spiests cīnīties par katru laimes sekundi, taču Deividam ar smaidu un praktiski bez piepūles atveras daudzas durvis. Kas viegli nāk, tas viegli iet... Endrjū izaug kā izcils sava aroda speciālists, un pat savu principu dēļ atsakās no naudīgās vietas Londonā. Turpretī Deivids atsakās no galvenā ārsta vietas par labu biznesam farmācijas industrijā. От Кронин досега съм чела само "Цитаделата", когато бях тийнейджърка. От това, което си спомням, мога да заключа, че и двата романа са нещо като чиклитите на о��ова време :D

"Дървото на Юда" разполага с може би най-егоистичния и безволев главен герой, за който мога да си спомня. Отвратително създание, което изобщо не може да бъде съжалено, че дори и оправдано. Интересно ми беше как се поддържа подобен образ чисто литературно, така да се каже, но като обикновен читател съм на границата да го намразя доживот.
В същото време, по някакъв интересен начин, нещата изглеждаха доста реалистични. Все пак "в живия живот" нещата рядко се случват по магия, както в книгите. От тази гледна точка романът е любопитен, защото създава чувството, че не е поредният захласнато романтичен/трагичен измислен разказ, ами точно обратното в много отношения.

Повече от една звезда, не бих могла да дам. Това е, може би, най- отвратителният мъжки образ, който някога съм срещала. Мислех, че Ана Каренина ме отвращава, но уви, д-р Дейвид Мъри и неговата липса на нравствено падение, тъй като вече и без това копае дъното, са връх в литературата. Егоизъм, нарцисизъм, ужасяващата фикс идея да бъдеш користно добър, за да се издигнеш в собствените си очи... Гнусно, гнусно и гнусно.
Не знам как ще проечта нещо друго на Кронин, който до сега харесвах, след този трагедия. Подобаващ край- верен на слабостта си до последно- малка утеха за загубеното време.

Rileggo questo libro dopo tanti anni e lo apprezzo ancora di più.
Croin ci racconta la vicenda del dottor David Moray che, ritiratosi in Svizzera, dopo una vita di egoismi, a godersi le proprie ricchezze, ritrova la ragazza che ha amato e abbandonato per un matrimonio economicamente conveniente e sulla figlia di lei riversa l'affetto che ha negato alla madre.
Il libro è un'accorta, drammatica denuncia contro l'avidità, la grettezza, la malvagità degli uomini e della società. Una storia sull’egoismo e sull’incapacità di amare, in cui il protagonista incarna l’uomo che vive solo per se stesso. Anche anche quando cercherà di fare la cosa giusta, animato dalle più nobili intenzioni, finirà per essere assalito da mille dubbi e incertezze e sceglierà comunque la strada più conveniente e semplice per lui.

«Era un brutto sogno, un incubo, impossibile capire come ci fosse arrivato. Aveva creduto di far bene, cercato di agire per il meglio. Oh, Dio, sì. aveva tentato con tutte le sue forze, aveva desiderato tanto fare del bene a tutti. Volontariamente non avrebbe mai fatto del male nemmeno a una mosca. Non si poteva fargliene una colpa se, animato dalle migliori intenzioni, si era fidato troppo delle propri forze ed era poi stato costretto a tirarsi indietro».

The Judas Tree by A J Cronin- Novel- English- David Moray is a wealthy physician in his fifties who lives in a Swiss villa, where he indulges his passion for collecting art. He is contemplating a relationship with the stylish yet impoverished Frida von Altishofer, but an idle comment overheard at a party brings an intoxicating memory from his youth. As an idealistic medical student, he once loved and planned to marry Mary Cameron, a simple, highland lass. But first, David had to take a long sea voyage as a ship doctor to recover from tuberculosis; there he met pouting but provocative Doris, and her hopeful parents. The prospect of a fabulous income in the family’s drug business makes him abandon Mary and a medical practice. He marries Doris but within a short time she is permanently committed to an asylum. The family semi-apologizes for not having told him of her illness. David compensates for his miserable marriage with material possessions that are a proxy for self- esteem, until Doris dies and sets him free. The overhead remark sends him back to Scotland only to discover that his jilted Mary, who had married a minister, is now dead. Her daughter, Kathy, is a nurse and the very spit of her mother. He falls in love all over again. Kathy will not marry him unless he returns to practice and joins her and her uncle as missionaries in Africa. Full of good intentions, he agrees. But he does not tell Kathy about Mary, and he forces himself on her against her will. When he assimilates the very real dangers of mission work, he simply fails to show up for the appointed rendezvous; he will marry Frida and keep his cherished possessions instead. Told bluntly by Frida of the marriage and of her mother’s past, Kathy drowns herself. David must identify her body. He then hangs himself from a Judas Tree. Impaired by weakness, selfishness, and lust, David was an orphan raised in poverty. He rejects a loving family and medicine for the prospect of filthy lucre and sophisticated sex. Utterly blind to the gold-digging aspirations of Frida and his staff, he is manipulated by everyone he meets, good or bad. He deflowers both Mary and her daughter, the former, a more willing partner than the latter. The possibility that Kathy could be his own daughter is not mentioned, although the silence is intriguing. As the title implies, betrayal is the main theme. David betrayed Mary, her family, her daughter, and even Doris, because he felt lust for her but never love. By posturing commitment, he betrayed religion too. Above all, he betrayed himself by abandoning his chosen profession. Life in the service of others could have compensated for David’s flaws. Cronin’s opinion of what constitutes a "wasted" medical education is quite clear; if it is possible at all, redemption for such a sin demands the ultimate price. It is a classic with a message therefore, a must read for all.

An excellent writer, portrays uncomfortable human characteristics insightfully. I did find myself feeling the lack of a “continental” education, wishing there was a glossary in the book. If you know a little Scottish, German, French and Italian, then you’ll understand little details that I let go rather than look up a translation. I was surprised by a few English words I didn’t know, as well, considering that I have a very good vocabulary. Usually when this happens in books it’s because they’re older books, just using words or expressions that have gone out of vogue. This story is copyrighted 1961, but the language felt older. I did keep feeling like I didn’t know WHEN it was—what year. I concluded from mention of a Jew being killed & his non-Jewish wife going into a concentration camp that every reference to “the war” meant World War II. But back in his younger days, & then in the “present”, I still felt “unmoored” in time. Perhaps not absolutely necessary, as human nature hasn’t changed, but it still felt disorienting. This feels like one of those books I wish I’d read as part of a class or guided book discussion group—to discuss the characters’ strengths & flaws & what made them so & is there hope for change, & why the title. The word “malleable” kept coming to my mind regarding Moray. I went back & reread the first 3 chapters to remind myself what he’d said about the Judas Tree, & what it was that had triggered his trip back to Scotland.

The Judas Tree is a dark novel about a man that cannot take responsibility over the woman he claims he loves. It's a pity he always chooses the easiest way (which turns out to be wrong) either to success or other women. Because of his egoistic and lustful nature he crushes a pure heart, and not one but of two different lives. The lack of moral leads only to destroyal, but at least even low creatures like the protagonist (that's a man only by his sex) has some conscious of what's right and wrong. The author describes and reveals very briefly in the whole novel that "the way to hell is laid out with good intentions" (which is the ending quote) and pure souls become victims of those hungry wolves coming in sheep clothing. I'm just a little disappointed how controversial the author chose to "take care" of the young girl (having in mind her faith) at the end, but at least the main character received a right judgement.

In some ways this is a decent little morality tale for grownups, but I spent the entirety of the read loathing the main character who is the worst kind of villain, the sort that imagines himself a victim and, aside from his wealth, is all too commonly found. The minor characters also come off as rather flat, awful themselves or lacking in the spark that might give them the clear sight to see Moray as he is and pick up on the red flags he drops. While I don't find any obvious faults in the writing, it's not particularly clever either. Overall... the mechanics of a solid story are there, but I can't say I enjoyed it.

Много ми хареса! Авторът разказва доста интересно, героите са добре изградени - интересни, понякога дразнещи, понякога симпатични, с характер. Местата и предметите допълват цялостната картина в хармония с разказа. На няколко пъти гледната точка се измества - много сполучлив похват, който дава по-широка представа за действието.
Интересно защо "хубавата" книга на Фрида е "Ана Каренина" - някак си не се вързва на всички други западни предмети на изкуството, които присъстват в изобилие. Може би идеята да живееш за другите е допирната точка в двете произведения и все пак го оставям като въпро�� за размисъл.
