4 Heartwarming Stars!
“I should’ve realized I’d always be one half of a whole. Living without you was like living with a missing limb. Sure, I learned to function pretty quick, but I always remembered what it’d been like before – always missed what I’d had.” ~Donovan
When I first saw the summary for Hell Without You, not to mention the cover, I was instantly intrigued. I'm a sucker for second-chance love stories or love gone wrong, and let’s face it, who isn't? So when I got my hands on a copy, I was very excited.
Unfortunately, school and life got in the way so it took me longer to get started on it than I'd planned. Once I had some fee time though, I finished it in two days. A sweet, simple, quick read that would have been great for the beach. Or a weekend spent in bed as the snow fell outside.
Forced to part to save Donovan from a terrible fate, Clementine makes the tough decision to move away from Willow Heights and start her ivy-league education as per her mother and step-father's wishes. Donovan, with no family left and the love of his life gone, packs up and joins the military.
Seven years later, fate brings them back together. Both are changed in many ways, but one thing remains: They love each other fiercely still.
“My soul has been trapped outside of my body for the past ten years.”
“Really?” She gripped her coffee mug, letting the ceramic warm her fingers.
“Where is it?”
“Sitting right across from me.” His voice went a little deeper, got a little rougher. “Don’t pretend you didn’t know that.”
Donovan has recently purchased Clementine's grandmother's old Victorian house with the intention of fixing it up room by room. He doesn't admit it outright, but his intentions go far beyond just fixing it up. He hopes that one day, Clementine will return to Willow Heights and to her grandmother's house, thus returning to him in the process. In the meantime, he’s opened his own body shop and works as a mechanic alongside Mike, the guy who does body work and paint jobs.
“I want you. I've always wanted you. Do you have any idea what it’s like to want somebody so bad for so long? You do stupid shit like try to sleep outside their door and let them play doctor with your foot just because you want to feel their touch.” ~Donovan
Clementine's return to Willow Heights is anything but joyful. Fresh out of college and searching for a job in the real world, she's forced to move back home and into her aunt's condo while she searches for a job in nearby Washington, D.C. Deciding to visit her grandmother's place before making it to the condo, she is shocked when she sees the man who still holds her heart pull into the driveway.
From there, the tension is flying all over the place, so thick with hurt, anger, and sexual tension just under the surface you could poke it with a pin and it would pop like a balloon.
"Donovan was like a planet of his own, a heavenly body in every sense of the word, complete with his own gravitational pull, which she'd never been able to resist-another thing that hadn't changed."
Thrown together by a freak flash flood, Clementine is forced to stay with Donovan as they wait out the storm and then while repairs are being done to the condo. Tension rises and truths are revealed, along with the fact that they still love each other. Passion insures and they have a steamy night together.
The story quickly progresses from there and has a twist in the middle that I definitely wasn't expecting. It was resolved in a believable and timely manner, so it wasn't too distracting.
The story ends on a happy note, although I would've liked to see a little more from it.
Overall, I would recommend this story to friends and other readers and will be checking out more from this author!
“To hell with trying to be what we’re not.” His breath rushed against her face, heating her lips and making them tingle. “What hasn't changed in seven years isn't ever going to change. You’re here, I’m here…The way I see it, the only question is whether we’re going to fuck everything up again, now that we have the chance. There’s no one – nothing – keeping us apart.” ~Donovan
