Reave: The Complete Series: Books 1-4

Rate this book
How far would you go to be free—to make your own choices without being subjected to punishment for doing what you felt was right? Could you kill for it?
After being abandoned by her father as a child, Aster spent ten years of her life as a servant for the Leader’s House in the broken city of New Bethel. She’d known, even as a child, that the cities of her world were corrupt places with human monsters—assassins—running rampant between their high walls.
Thinking everything will remain the same as it always has there, Aster is startled to discover that, one day... the cycle breaks. As a young new leader takes a strange and—at times—horrifying interest in her, will she be capable of discovering the reasons behind his actions and orders?
In a world where nothing is as it seems and all things are never anywhere near as simple as they appear at first glance, will she be capable of making the distinction between what is real and what is not? Will she find anyone at all she can trust? More importantly...
Does she have the strength to do what is necessary to survive in a world filled with evil?

Experience a journey of twists, turns, and secrets with this collection of the entire series.

I have read all 4 of these boos and I absolutely love them. I will share all 4 reviews below.

REAVE
First off this novel was given to me by the author for a down right honest review and I plan on giving her that. With that said this novel was beautifully written and I loved almost every bit of it! It took me forever to read the book only because it was hard to get into at first. Even though it was hard to get into I am so glad I decided to pick it back up and finish it! Aster really surprised me at the end of the book and I am surprised that the characters came together quite nicely. I didn't expect the things from the Reaper Chase had done and I can't believe some of the other character are extremely, should I say close, to Aster. It's hard to explain the book without giving to much away. You just have to read it and find out for yourselves how wonderful it truly is. This is only the first of the series and I can not wait to get my hands on the second!

Update 2023: I reread this book so I could read the second. 8 years later and I’m still in love with it and could not put it down. I also lived more life and now understand a lot more where Characters are coming from. Aster is very sheltered even in a life of servitude and not being allowed to be her own person but property. She didn’t know the ways of the world beyond the House. In comes Chase, the big bad Reaper, who Aster knew to be afraid of. They kill for a living why shouldn’t she be afraid? Where do you draw the line for good and evil? Can Aster move past her fears? Will she find answers she’s been looking for? She might or does she get herself into something she can’t get herself out of? Read to find out.

ELUDE
Spoilers: Elude is the second book in this series and it’s even more captivating than the first. Reave bleeds perfectly into Elude which becomes more thrilling and captivating. You start to see the characters in new light. Aster is starting to learn what really matters in life. The beginning of Elude Aster is just starting to figure that out. She makes her second kill defending someone she has fallen for that isn’t Chase, and yes, it’s another Reaper. (Face palm moment). In the sequel, Aster is surrounded by them now. Some she considers friends. She starts to learn who she can truly trust. The Author has written this book beautifully. As you’re reading along and seeing Aster learn lessons and the way life is/could be, you are learning those lessons too or you may be seeing situations in a new light. Not sure if the author meant to do that or not but so far this series opens your eyes in ways I didn’t expect. It also has plenty of plot twists and makes you want to keep reading. The only problem I had was It was a little confusing at times. I’d get lost on weather Aster was actually saying something or was thinking it and would have to reread paragraphs a few times. That said I can not wait for the 3rd one which comes out tomorrow!

This book was given to me by the author for an honest review. Honestly this series has me stuck and I will be sad when it ends.

ASCEND
Spoilers:
3rd installment and this series has lost none of its spark. Aster has learned and grown so much since leaving New Bethel. She is brilliant and is determined to change the world. She is learning what love really is and what a wedding is all about, even though she truly doesn’t understand either. She is in new territory when it came to her feelings. Forgiving her father and trying to work on a relationship with her brother. Truly letting Jastin see her for the first time after their wedding. Showing him the love he has always shown her. And they lived happily ever after, only for 2 days. The ending had my heart pounding out of my chest. You will have to read it yourselves to find out why. I need the 4th book. I need to know what happens to Aster and to know where the hell Jastin is. This book is more than just a fantastic story but it is a hidden self help book. The more Aster grows and leans about the world and people, you too learn those same lessons. It makes you think more openly about mankind and what the world could be with more love, compassion, and we can’t forget dancing.

This book was graciously given to me by the author to read and review.

TO FALL
Given to me by the author to read and review.

Heartbreakingly beautiful story. The way this one had so many surprises had my heart pounding several times. I cried so much within the last 200 or so pages because of all the stuff Aster was going through. After the betrayal from Chase, she really fell into it with Jastin. The happiness only lasted so long after the wedding. They found out just how much they really weren’t meant to be married. Even though their marriage was in shambles Aster never let that interfere with how she felt about Jastin’s son Aston. He was her child no matter what. Durning Aster and Jastin’s downfall, drops in Alin, who is actually his leader Bren. Bren complicates even more things for Aster, like she really needed more complications. Her city is being threatened and she is willing to die for it. The long awaited war between Hastings and Garin arrives but only one comes out victorious.

There is so much said in this book about love, trust, hope, and faith that I think people really need to pay attention to it and take it in. Aster was learning all of that at the age of 18/19/20 so she was seeing it differently then the rest of the world made up in this story or in our real everyday life. We learn all of that at a young age so we are biased to it by the time we are that age and can really learn from it instead of the tainted versions we have.

Past all of the lessons are fantastic relationships between old and new characters. Some of the relationships fall apart and other are only strengthened. You see a little more into each of their lives as you start to see them for who they really are. Aster is more than a “princess”, Stelin is more than Hasting’s asshole son, Ahren is a fighter in more ways than one, Jastin is just an asshole. The list of people’s true selves keeps going because people are now starting to truly see. Even the people of the city, some stayed to fight while others were evacuated. And then there was other you wished didn’t come back, *cough Cherise cough*. But you start to see into their lives a little more. I hope the author continues on with their stories. I wouldn’t mind seeing where they lead.

The entire Reave series manages to show the evolution a character can go through in just a few years. Aster goes from being a shy and sheltered woman to someone who wants to and can experience the world, willing to fight so that everyone has that basic right. C. Miller's writing style focuses on Aster's thoughts and emotions and uses those to to tell her story. This technique allows her readers to get a deeper understanding of how the protagonist thinks and views the world. Aster was taught from a young age that it is better to be invisible, and she believed by pretending no one could see her, that she actually was invisible. All it takes is one event to change her view on the world, that people could see her and the only one blind was her.
Aster starts Reave being that silently rebellious servant, just discovering that she deserved better than her current life, to being willing to fight for that right with the right friends to support her. In Elude, she discovers she needs to be seen as worthwhile and earn the respect of her companions. Ascend, Aster begins to realize just how blind she was to the world. She always knew there was more to life than stone walls and being a servant, but she never let herself go out and enjoy it and realize she has that freedom now. And with that freedom comes responsibility and image, all things Aster has never cared about and sees no purpose in. The series climaxes in To Fall because it has taken Aster a long time to finally have a life and a purpose in life worth fighting for, and defending it isn't something she can do alone. She has come a long way from being a servant, but with the hate of the world closing in, has she changed enough to be able to protect the future she wants?

Amazing books, amazing series. I have read and re-read the books several times, and I can't wait for spin-offs!
