Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Tagore modernised Bengali art by spurning rigid classical forms and resisting linguistic strictures. His novels, stories, songs, dance-dramas, and essays spoke to topics political and personal. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

I very much enjoyed reading this book, one of the few from the Nobel collection that transported me to another time and space and shown me a different world - the one of late 19th century India, under British rule. At the core it's a philosophical debate on the impact of religion, colonialism politics and the caste system but at the surface, this debate takes the form of characters who live, learn, grow and love. It's a book that simply should be read.

O incursiune în problematicile sociale, religioase și culturale ale Indiei moderne, acest bildungsroman prezintă poveștile de viață și dilemele unor personaje care pendulează între tradiție și schimbare, între acceptarea și chestionarea unor sisteme stricte de reguli, care tind sa normeze de la cele mai mari până la cele mai mici aspecte ale vietii umane.
Sunt analizate, prin prisma personajelor care trăiesc în mijlocul acestor alegeri: sistemul de caste, rolul femeii în societate, iubirea și prietenia, apartenența și individualismul, religia ca punte sau ca prăpastie și, nu în cele din urmă, capacitatea individului și a societății, ca sistem, de a se transforma și de a rezolva nedreptățile.
