It started out as a nice day. Then Brownie happened. Watch out, Pegram County!
Brownie has returned to the Snoddy Estate. His mother is seven months pregnant, ordered to bed rest and in desperate need of Brownie-free time. So off Brownie goes to visit the Texas Snoddys! It’s the middle of November, he’s ten years old, and they’ve taken away his homemade Taser. How much trouble could there possibly be?
Two men have decided to kidnap Brownie for the rumored Civil War gold the Snoddys reputedly have. And that was their mistake, because no one with a brain in their head kidnaps Brownie Snoddy.
No one.
The Ransom of Brownie is book 4.5 in the Bubba series, taking place after Bubba and the Mysterious Murder Note. It is about 41,500 words long.
C.L. Bevill has been in the U.S. Army, cleaned floors, a graphic illustrator, a therapist, and a stay at home mother. She lives in the Alabama area with her husband and daughter and keeps plugging away at the next great American novel.
The sixth book in the Bubba series. In this one Bubba's nephew Brownie (cousin once removed) has been kidnapped by two very stupid young ex-cons who believe the myth that a treasure worth millions of dollars is buried on the Snoddy estate. FBI is called in and the local police. Everyone in town is elated because Brownie is gone. Brownie raises havoc as only he can. Bubba is the only one who seriously investigates the kidnap. I won't spoil the rest of the story. It's a fun and a short read.
Having already read several of the "Bubba" books, I knew I was in for a good time. This quick read is along the same lines as "Ransom of Red Chief", and is a hoot to read. Only thing is, if you share a bed with someone and like to read after the other person has gone to sleep, this is probably not a good choice. Unless the other person doesn't mind being wakened by your giggles.
If this kid ever reaches adulthood, he’ll either be Wile E. Coyote or the Unibomber. Between the FBI’s most ineffective agents, a couple of idiotic kidnappers, and Brownie in a junkyard, it was one of the best laughs I’ve had in awhile.
I have to admit that I giggled throughout this story. Brownie gets kidnapped by 2 felons who really should have had their heads examined. The entire town was in an uproar when Brownie had to come live at the Snoody mansion while his mother is on bed rest at 7 months pregnant. In the few days that Brownie had been in town, he left an impression (not usually a good one) wherever he went. The ransom note was discounted at first. After it was realized that Brownie was indeed kidnapped, Bubba and Miz Demetrize try to find him. Willodean and her boss do their best, but the FBI gets called in. The kidnappers were slow to realize what a terror Brownie is and fall for his pranks quite a bit. It was entertaining and well done. A nice addition to this series.
Oh this story had me laughing so hard at poor kidnappers. Mainly the pranks with bathroom, and duct tape . Stayed up all night to read this one great book
Ha haaaaa...... Once again an excellent book. I was expecting a good read, I got it. I was expecting a good laugh, I got it. A fast paced read and what good fun. I read this in bed and giggled to myself. My wife was complaining as she is two books in the series behind me. Thank you...
Amusingly up dared storyline, well done. Good story for young er readers and grownups too. No blood no guts no preverts, you can guess ahead, but it still works well.
Someone believes in the rumor of the Confederate gold on the Snoddy place. Brownie is back with Bubba and Miz Demetrice because his mother is pregnant and having problems - namely Brownie, who's worried that she hasn't yelled at him for weeks. So he's going to school and staying with the Snoddy's. Bubba is not thrilled because the principal has called every day. Besides Barownie's dog's favorite chew toys seem to be Bubba's shoes. All the retailers have been warned not to sell him sharpies. But on his way to school, he is kidnapped for a huge ransom. But Brownie's kidnappers are not the brightest on the block, or even the state.
The story has taken the basic idea of "The Ransom of Red Chief" - which the author admits up front, but Brownie is way ahead on the stuff he does - and the technology. Quite a fun read. Of course, Bubba spends his time trying to track down Brownie with an eye to rescuing him.
This novella is part of the Bubba Snoddy series, but it is a side trip that can be safely ignored. For my taste, I should have done so. I quickly suspected it was based on O. Henry's The Ransom of Red Chief; in the afterword the author confirmed it.
The colorful metaphors amused me, but reading practical joke after practical joke became tedious for me. I don't enjoy them played on me; I don't enjoy reading about them constantly. And those were what made up so much of the book. Unlike the other books where Brownie's antics were spread out through the whole novel, in this shorter novella the pranks were the focus. O. Henry carried it off in a short story -- I suspect that is because a longer version couldn't sustain the humor.
The best part of this novella is it prompted me to re-read the much better inspiration.
Copied from Amazon It started out as a nice day. Then Brownie happened. Watch out, Pegram County!

I love these books! Bubba is my hero, and Brownie ... Well let's just say I'm glad he's not my nephew! The kidnappers really didn't know what they had let themselves in for! One thing I really want to know ... Does the fantastic contraption in chapter 12 really work? It sounds fantastic and so visual! I laughed out loud! Caron - thank you so much for these books! I started the Zigzaggery zombies straight away!
More laugh out loud reading. I actually woke up my husband reading this in bed. Who would be stupid enough to kidnap the kid who gazed Matt Lauer with a homemade tazer. Some one stupid enough to not believe he made the tazer. They definitely definitely deserve what they get and what they have pay to give brownie back.
Not quite a short story and not quite a full book - more like a 1/2 book. I enjoy Brownie's exploits and this is on all about him. Perhaps a little too much but fun and easy. Sounds like there's a new little sister/brother on the way and a new dog added to the mix for later. Am looking forward to the next one...with more Bubba, I'm assuming :)
C.L. Neville writes light hearted mysteries that will make you giggle throughout the book. Brownie returns to wreck havoc and gets kidnapped. The kidnappers fall into every trap Brownie makes while Bubba looks for him. I love this book and the previous ones. Just great entertainment .
I believe that the RANSOM of BROWNIE is by far the funniest book I've read in this series. I really like all the Snoddys but Brownie is my favorite. He is destined for greatness whether that be scientist or President or a mastermind criminal remains to be seen. Brawhaha!!
I enjoy reading about the antics of Brownie. This was a fun read, I admit that it was enjoyable to read about the pranks he came up with. It would have been nice if it was a full length book, rather than a novella, but I will take a Brownie or Bubba story in any form. I am hooked on this series.
Loved, loved, loved this short story. How much trouble can one young child get into. I have loved the Snoddy series since the first book and would recommend it to anyone looking to read about a dysfunctional family with a heart of gold. Can't wait for the next one.
Just pure light reading. Really fun stuff.Especially enjoyed the ending. Have read six of the Bubba books. Every one different from the other but with the same cast of real characters.
This is a take off on Ransom of Red Chief with Bubba´s young cousin as the kidnap victim. It´s laugh-out-loud funny in places. It´s a novella so it´s a quick read, but it´s funny with a satisfactory conclusion...
love this book. it's funny, and your wondering what Brownie will do next. couldn't put it down. hopefully there will be more adventures for the snoody's
