“What was the point of being so special if all it had brought me was separation from my father and hounding by strangers who thought they knew what was best for me?”

This is the second book in The Mentalist series and we continue to follow the lives of Gemma, Ross and Gemma’s father. At the end of Aversion, Gemma went back to Sandes with Ross and her father continued staying hidden and try to gather information about Sentient Twins and Progressive Empath’s.
In Sentient we kind of continue where we left off. Gemma lives in Sandes at Mrs Burlington’s house, claiming to be her ward, and of course Ross is there too. Their lives go on as normal as it can for a Progressive Empath until one day a mysterious woman appears at Mrs Burlington’s house, claiming to be sent by Gemma’s father. Not soon after the appearance of Laura, they also cross paths with other Progressive Empaths and one hybrid too. From there, Gemma’s life begins to get a bit harder than it already is and she needs to try and master her skills as soon as possible.

In Aversion I was left to hope for more explanations about all this Aversion thing going on. In this book, a lot of those thing are explained a bit more and we get some new information about all of it. There is also some surprising twists and turns in this one too but still it was kind of boring to read. Even though Aversion wasn’t fast paced, it still feels that it had more important thing going on. Sentient ain’t any more fast paced than Aversion and it kind of lack action. I mean with all the new thing happening, all the new people getting in to the story, you’d think that something would really happen. When all we get is one get-together with them all and that’s it.

For me Sentient was truly what the name suggests already, about the Sentient Twins, Gemma and Ross. At least the first half of the book was about these two going on and off with each others. Being jealous about other boys and girls but still not getting together because reasons. It started to get really frustrating and annoying with all this drama between them, no not exactly drama but all the back and forth between them. One day Gemma was kind of giving the cold shoulder and did not allow Ross to touch her but still she was being jealous about Hayley, then the next day they were kissing, touching etc.

All in all my rating for Sentient is 3.5 stars. I know it’s only half stars fewer than what I gave for Aversion but even though I did grew a bit bored and annoyed with all the relationship drama, there were still good and exciting parts in this book also! And the ending was so happy and sweet and ahh ♥ I do hope that the third book contains a little more action and a little less relationships.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this sequel to Aversion, though I don't think it's perfect. It has the same flaw as the first book in that the story is told in a stream of consciousness from Gemma. It reads like a diary entry, and I found it hard to get a picture of what Gemma's world is like.

Though saying that, this second book in the series does flesh out a lot of the details around Aversion and the Avertor's community and politics. In terms of world-building, it is an improvement on the first book, which felt a bit like it was happening in an isolated bubble.

We get some really interesting new characters, and I think where this series really excels is in its character creation and development. Russ and Gemma are both great characters. They are genuine and realistic and they are very sweet together! I like the introduction of Laura and I'd love to see her get more page time in the next book.

Gemma is running the risk becoming a bit of a special snowflake. She has powers that no one has heard of before, and they keep appearing from nowhere with no precedents. It could have been interesting to see how she deals with them but most of the book is about Gemma thinking about her new powers and worrying about them. Her internal narration comes across as genuine and self-deprecating though, and that stops things from getting irritating.

Even with the diary style narration I still found this book easy to get into and enjoyable to read. Just a bit less thinking and a bit more plot next time, please!

The second book in The Mentalist series by Kenechi Udogu. In the first book, Aversion, Gemma learns she is more than just an Averter and she finds out about Sentient Twins. This second book gives more information about the world of the Mentalists. That's interesting, and needed, but this was a slower paced read than the first book.

A short, entertaining YA fantasy. Great characters. Interesting story. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

It’s done. I have officially finished reading the Mentalist series by Kenechi Udogu.

In case you haven’t heard about it already, the Mentalist series is a trilogy plus one short novella. Each book is on the short side and even with four books in the series, they are rather easy to finish. But even with the allure of being a short series, was it worth the read?

Gemma Green is an averter. No, scratch that. She is a Progressive Empath. An averter is capable of altering people’s minds to prevent them from committing self-endangering acts. Gemma is capable of so much more. In a world of male averters, Gemma struggles to understand her powers. But as her path crosses with others like herself, she must learn to control these new abilities. And if she hopes to protect those she loves, she’ll need to do it quickly.

First of all, I would like to thank the author of this book, Kenechi Udogu, for offering me an ARC of this novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and in turn enjoyed this one also, so thankyou!

Having read Aversion, book one of The Mentalist Series I was slightly wary when I went into reading this one. The only reason for this is that I have found in the past that occasionally books tend to go a bit 'down-hill' after the first one. It was with this thought in mind that I began reading and, oh boy, I am so glad I did. Once again, Udogu did not fail to entertain me. From chapter one I was thoroughly enjoying the novel and found it hard to put down.

In this book we learn about the growing relationship between Russ and Gemma and we get to see them trying to figure things out together, with the added worry that one day someone is going to turn up and they are going to try to do something terrible to Gemma. As if learning the ropes to a new teen relationship wasn't hard enough, suddenly these two have even more on their plate. But it is that added fact which makes the relationship so interesting. Gemma's inability to touch Russ without sharing an occasionally life-altering vision really intrigued me as a reader and made me very interested to see how both characters will handle not being able to be near when they are so clearly attracted to each other.

In this novel, plenty new characters are introduced. For example, Laura. I loved this girl right from her introduction. Suffice it to say, this story really did need a bit more bounce to it and that is exactly what Laura provides. She is fun, down to earth and yet manages to maintain an element of mystery which further intrigued me as a reader. It was the constant question brewing, is she on our side or not?

To continue this point, let me tell you that this novel is not just a simple, continuation of a growing love, it is so much more. There is action, adventure, thrills and of course mystery. A lot of mystery. Where is Gemma's dad? Who is Laura? What will Anthony do next? All these questions and more definitely served to keep me very intrigued and desperate to read on and know more. Obviously, these questions are answered toward the end of the novel, however new ones are left in their place, which has definitely served to keep me interested in this series and dying to read the next book, and I'm sure it will for you too!

Having said all this, I do feel that in some places this novel was slightly lacking. Occasionally, it did get a bit tedious and left me wanting to stop reading to go do something more interesting. However, when thoughts like this popped into my head it didn't take long to distill them, because in every few chapters something new happens and some new twist is introduced.

Overall, I would say this book could have been better. However, that does not detract from the fact that it is a very well written and well thought out story. If you have read the first book and are looking for a bit of light reading to tide you over during a lazy weekend or on a long train journey then I do recommend you read this, it is quite enjoyable.

I read the first book in this series and was pretty excited when approached to read this continuation. This book continues Gemma's journey of self discovery while learning what being a Progressive Empath really means and what she can do being one. Without her Dad Gemma finds learning about herself and her abilities a hard thing to master. Russ and her have an odd relationship too, that she isn't sure what to do with. She wants to love him, but part of her isn't so sure she should or can knowing how they have a special bond. She wants to know she loves him for him and not because of their bond and that he loves her for her and not because of their bond. When Gemma starts having nightmares, well a reoccurring nightmare, she seeks out anyone that can help her. There are some new strangers in town that say they can help her with her powers and learn more about who she is. Should she trust them? Do they really just want to help her? She's running out of time to decide who to trust, she just hopes she makes the right choice when it really counts.

I enjoyed this continuation very much. It has been a bit since I read the first book, so I thought it a perfect test to see if the author did a good job reminding the reader of what the series was all about. This was done very well. I remembered right away what happened in the first book and who the characters were and what they were all about. I think a huge part of this is because these are such unique books and characters, you just never could forget them. Gemma and Russ once again won my heart and I was glad to see them together and and in a new stage of their relationship/bond. I love how the author took "normal" teen things and mashed them in with "special circumstances" that went with the book and the characters. For instance, the feelings of love for Russ and the teenage hormones that made Gemma feel that way for him on top of the special connection they know they share because of what Gemma is. I thought it simply added a nice touch for teens relating to the characters better. The action of this book was a bit touch and go in the beginning, but there was a method to that madness as they say, you really needed some things to have the action of it all make more sense when it did happen. It was not slow moving by any means, especially if you remembered how the first book ended. I found it an easy read and a read that was easy to follow, yet kept my attention and my wonder of what was coming next. The characters were a true joy to see developing more and I can't wait to see where else they go from here. Such a great continuation of a wonderful series. Very well written, the descriptions were perfect for making me "see" exactly what was happening as I was reading. I highly suggest picking this book up along with the first book in the series if you have not read it.

5/5 Stars!

And once again I'd like to thank Kenechi Udogu for letting me read and review this book.

After having spent the summer with her father, Gemma is back in Sandes and tries as much as possible to lead a normal life. While in "Aversion", Gemma's trusting relation with her father was one of the main themes, our heroine now has to rely on herself, since her father left her alone in order to protect her from Henry. Gemma, on the other hand, is trying to protect Russ but feels more and more overwhelmed by the task. She misses her father terribly and doesn't know how to handle the situation without him.

Once again, Gemma is described as a very believable character and I could relate to her easily. She barely turned 16 and her whole world is upside down. Her mother is dead, she cannot contact her father, and from Russ, the only other person she trusts, she has to keep her distance. When more and more dubious mentalists cross her path and corner her, she doesn't know who to trust and what to believe. Who is friend? Who is enemy? Who wants to help her and who wants to use her?
The only bastion of calm is Russ, who is always by her side and once again does whatever Gemma asks him to do - without questioning or doubting. His unwavering trust makes him a slightly colorless supporting character with no own opinions or conflicting emotions whose only job it is to support the heroine in all her decisions.

The new additions, on the other hand, are very well done. Laura as well as Anthony and his women remain mysterious throughout the book and don't lay their cards on the table until the very end.

There are books that fall like a tempest upon the reader and don't Iet them catch their breath. Sentient is like a gentle summer rain that falls quietly and pleasantly without too much action. Only the end comes up with a twist that surprises not only the characters. I enjoyed the story a lot and look forward to see how it goes on. It is the right book for a warm, rainy summer evening on the couch. :-)

I have received this book in exchange for an honest review. I have given the second instalment of The Mentalist Series: Sentient by Kenechi Udogu three out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️
In Sentient, we carry on following the lives of Gemma, her dad; Paul and Russ. I was hoping for this book to really take off from Aversion as I thoroughly enjoyed the first instalment, however I found the second book rather boring (in the first half). Towards the end of the book, things started to pick up with twists, turns and a little action which made it more interesting. I liked how the beginning of Sentient recapped over what had previously happened in Aversion which helped make it fresh in your mind.
The new characters that joined us in Sentient were introduced well, especially Laura. I enjoyed learning about her quirky personality, I think Udogu did a fantastic job of creating another well-developed character into the series, along with some other interesting characters too.
I adore Gemma and Russ and their connection they have, however the first half of the book was mainly dedicated to their actions, I love their scenes together but I think the first half of Sentient dragged on a little too much about their on and off moments. Having said that, I hope we get to learn a bit more about Russ and even his family in the third book and I feel there is a lack of knowledge about his background and I'd definitely like to learn more about him.
There were quite a few questions I had at the end of Aversion and this is where Sentient didn't disappoint as I got a few of my answers I was hoping for, along with new information and details of the world the Averters and Progressive Empaths live in. I'm looking forward to see what events occur in the next book.
I can only hope that more action takes place in the third instalment and that there will be more Gemma and Russ scenes because I absolutely adore them.

(I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

I quite enjoyed the first book in this series, so it was nice to have the chance to read the second book.

I did like Gemma, as well as her relationship with Russ. Although I'm still not sure their relationship is totally believable, I think that the author does a good job of showing that uncertainty, at least on Gemma's part.

Although I did like the fact that this book was written from first person perspective, there were several moments when Gemma commented on what another characters was feeling when she shouldn't have known. I think it's one of the traps I see a lot with books written in first person.

It was good to see other Progressive Empaths, since it was nice to see that Gemma wasn't a completely special, unique, one-of-a-kind being. (I got sick of that a long time ago). I also liked Laura, though I didn't really know what to make of her for a lot of the book. I think I'd like to see a book focused on Laura, since she's a much more interesting character.

I don't really know what to make of the bad guys, either. They're at least interesting ones who don't seem evil for the sake of it. I'd also like to see and learn more about Peter - in this book, he was a much more well-rounded character than in the first one.

The writing was really good, though I did notice several errors. I was able to see a lot of the events happening in my mind, though, and it was relatively easy to empathise with the main characters.

I think I'd definitely be interested in reading the next book in this series. I want to see what will happen with the storylines and the relationships between the characters.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Kenechi Udogu!

Sentient
is the sequel to Aversion and continues the story of Gemma and Russ. Gemma finally discovered that she’s a Progressive Empath and is now trying to figure out how to work with her new abilities. She doesn’t really know what to think of her and Russ’ Sentient link and she’s also plagued with nightmares…

Sentient is an amazing sequel and I couldn’t wish for a better sequel. Sentient starts were Aversion left off and it’s easy to follow. You get immediately sucked into Gemma’s world and her problems. Sentient, like Aversion, is a fast-paced book with an interesting theme.

I really liked that there was some good character development. Gemma was really unsure of her abilities and her Sentient link with Russ, but at the end of the book she was more confident and trusted her Sentient link more than in the beginning. Russ has always been good to Gemma and has always been there for her. I think it would be so frustrating for Russ to be in love with Gemma and he’s not allowed to touch her. But, like the good friend he is, he gives Gemma her space. I really like Gemma and Russ’ relationship and I cannot wait to read more about the two of them.

Sentient was such a good book and I cannot wait to read the third book, Keepers!

Gemma Green (Colt) is back in Sandes and nothing is the same. When we last saw our heroine, she had just escaped a threat that could've destroyed her family. But by luck or destiny, she survived only to face a more powerful foe.

Sentient is the next installment in The Mentalist Series by Kenechi Udogu. New characters arrive and new talents surface. In this book, Gemma seems emotionally drained by everything that has happened, however her abilities are gaining strength. Although Gemma is more subdued mentally this time around, outside forces push the plot forward.

Russ is as solid as ever and holds Gemma up where she's lacking. Laura is a quirky character that Gemma nor the reader are really sure of her intentions. She brings much needed relief to the growing tension of the plot. The background of The Mentalists is really beginning to grow here. Something big is brewing and it looks like it's headed toward Gemma whether she likes it or not. You'll have to read to find out what.

I recommend this for a good read. There are many mysteries posed and many mysteries made clear. I'm looking forward to the next installment to answer some big questions and see what Gemma is really capable of.

Review on blog: Tumbling in Books

Let me start off with this: This book is EASILY better than the first one! I definitely loved it more! I'll admit though, the beginning was a little slow for me but when the plot thickens, it's just like, BAM! Action!

I think I should list down the pros and cons.

Cons:
-Slow beginning but the introduction is definitely needed.
-I kinda feel like Gemma is more uptight in Sentient than in Aversion?

Pros:
-Character growth. Gemma's uptightness? It didn't last long.
-MORE SUPERPOWERSSSSS!!!!
-Russ. Definitely Russ.
-And new fun character! I LOVE LAURA!!!

Sentient has everything! It keeps you guessing with suspense, the tension between Russ and Gemma keeps you at the edge of your seat and that small plot twist in the end like, WHAT?! Also, I am giving credit to Kenechi Udogu for not making Sentient into a cliffhanger. Like, if she did, I will DIE. Second book syndrome is a bitch. Cliffhanger or no cliffhanger, I am EXCITED to see what she has for Keeper.

PS: I am LOVING that cover! If I ever see this book on Malaysia's shelf, I will buy it without a second thought :D

I received an advanced copy from the Author in exchange for an honest review and I must say I'm extremely happy I agreed to do so.
The second book in the Mentalist series does not disappoint and it only gets better from the first book, Aversion. It picks up almost immediately after the events that happened to our leading lady, Gemma and is filled with none stop action, new charters, plots and twists. I fell in love immediately with the new character Lauren and want to know more about the new (yet old, in the background) antagonists (or will they be protagonists in the future?) lead? by Anthony and his group of empaths.
I can not wait for the third installment of this novella. If the first one sucked you into the World of Gemma Colt. then this one will suck you in even more. A Great follow up to an already amazing series. Could not be happier with the direction of the book and am so glad Gemma if finally, (hopefully) letter her guard down with Russ.

i want to thank you the author who provided me with an ARC.

sentient is a second book of the mentalist series, and it also a novella too, which is either a good thing, i could read it fast in one sitting and a bad thing, because you end up wanting more.

the story still revolves around Gemma, and her newfound sentient twin, Russ. the chemistry between them is so strong, i wonder how Gemma would be able to resist it?

as if being a progressive empath is not enough, Gemma find a new power that would make her more special. well i dont want to tell a spoiler in here, but let me tell you, the plot twist was wicked. and i love the new character as well.

the Sentient is unlike any other YA paranormal books out there, it offers new different stories, different experience. no more vamps and werewolves here. i enjoyed every moment reading it, so i know you would too.

Disclaimer: I received this as an ARC from the author.

After reading, reviewing, and enjoying book #1, I was excited to dive right in to this book. I still think Gemma is a good heorine, however I was less sure of her this time. I can't exactly pinpoint what's leading to my hesitations over her though so I'll have to re-read and come back to this!

I mostly took off a star because I felt there wasn't enough plot movement and overall felt the story was too short (maybe that's the same problem..). There was page after page of...stuff; too much filler IMHO. That said, I'm still interested in this series as there were definitely a few twists that kept me intrigued!

I didn’t think that this could get any better, but it has. This is just a remarkable book that is flying under the radar. I guarantee that once you pick it up that you will be like me and be unable to put this down.

The story picks up with Gemma rejoining Russ and learning to intermingle with his friends, training her powers and finding a new possible alliances and enemies all while trying to maintain a normalcy of a teenager girl. Talk about having your plate full.

The juggling of supernatural versus realism is fantastically drawn that you can appreciate Gemma in both forms. Her relationships and her growths are strongly exhibited within the storyline which solidifies my unity with her.

As I thought the book was going to suffer from second book syndrome, (which tends to happen especially in trilogies) I found that Sentient had so much more wonder trapped within its binding. The plot thickens, the hero’s work, the villains came out with claws. But who is to come on top was left a mystery and hopefully all will be revealed in the final installment (Keepers) which I hurriedly jumped too.

As things began to smooth out for Gemma, Udogu added new characters to stir the pot once more. The character development was spot on, the personalities remarkable, but the underlying question still lingered “Who should Gemma trust?” Allegiance were formed and broken and formed again, and they will not disappoint. The return of past characters added the and extra sweet treat with the methodical twist that just left my jaw to the floor.

Kenechi Udogu writing style is superbly written and will leave you beyond flabbergasted with the story that you just read.

Ahh book 2. The second book of a trilogy is usually a little more slower. We get to know more about Gemma, and more about the world of Mentalists. In the previous book, there was enough mystery to keep us interested. In Sentient, we started getting bombshells! So much happens in this one, and I'm not going to spoil anything!! Just trust me when I say that the second book of ANY TRILOGY are usually my favorites (Catching Fire for Hunger Games, and the Scorch Trials for the Maze Runner just to name a couple).

Gemma and Russ, we learned at the end of Book One, are Sentient Twins. This would explain why they both are pulled towards each other. She learns more about some secrets her dad kept from her, and a little more about why she's "special." In this one, we meet quite a number of people that pull the story along. There are more actions, but also a lot of waiting around for the other shoe to drop.

It's this waiting for the other shoe to drop that drives Gemma. She's more anxious and more on guard. In this book, we also get to know more about Russ. Russ has become my favorite! He stays grounded, stays calm, and is the voice of reason to Gemma's runaway thoughts. Together, they realize the strength they have. Apart, well.....apart, Russ is still the voice of calm, and Gemma is still anxiety filled. Although she's the "special one," and the one with the abilities, you realize it's Russ that grounds her, and allows her to focus on what really matters. Chasing bad guys, fine. Giving bad guys a taste of what you can do when you put them together? Priceless. What more could you want in a Sentient? .

Book Two in The Mentalist Series carries on the story that I found so engaging in Book One, Aversion, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is not a stand-alone novel, however. Unless one has the background of Aversion, much would not make sense. Gemma continues to narrate the story in which she must confront the fact that she is more than an Averter, and her connection to Russ is deeper than it seemed at first.

As before, I enjoyed the author's creativity and writing style. She is a good storyteller with great promise as a writer. She would benefit from an editor, however, to ensure that commas and semicolons are where they need to be and to eliminate run-on sentences.

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Sentient is such a step up from Aversion. I felt such a deep connection to the characters in this book. Everything from the plot twists to the new characters really made this story pop for me. I love the inner battles that Gemma faces as she figures out what to do about Russ and handles her father’s absence. The problem I had was the ignoring feelings for the “greater good” reasoning. It is never a good idea. Ever. Otherwise, I really enjoyed everything about this book and all of the twists and turns it took right until the end.

I got a copy of this for a fair and honest review. Wow what a book two. This picks up not long after Aversion. It has Gemma reuniting with Russ at school and trying to intermingle with his friend. All the while of trying to learn and train her new powers and abilities. There is a lot packed into this book. I don't want to give anything way but there is a lot more revealed about the world of the Mentalists in this book. Want to know all the details pick up a copy of this book.

As far as this book goes, I enjoyed it more than the first. The beginning was kind of boring to read, but it just had a slow start and picked up pace as I read more.

There were new characters introduced in this book which I think saved it from being boring like the first. With these characters brought in, I felt like it added something to the story that wasn’t there before. These books are definitely character-driven stories. Dialogue is used quite a bit so having more characters equals more events and possible outcomes to unfold. Thus, I became intrigued.

More information was revealed in this book about the world of Averters and Sentientals and such which I loved. I felt like the author was able to get a better grip of her world and characters in this book. It was more interesting to read and I was actually guessing what would happen at the end which is always a good thing.

Despite this, I felt like my expectations weren’t met? It’s hard to describe but everything felt a bit anti-climactic. The stakes felt high and my heart got pumping during some parts but I never felt like something bad was actually going to happen to the characters because the antagonists just didn’t seem very… antagonistic? If that makes any sense.

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

Overall I enjoyed this book more than the first one. There were still a few things that I didn’t like, such as the pacing and lack of action but it was a great second book in the series and had me excited to read the third.

This book, in comparison with Aversion, has a better developed story. Yet, I felt that most of the questions weren’t really answered as more were raised. I liked the development that some characters went through and the increasing intensity that was felt during the reading.
Russ’s intuition amazed me! He always seemed to know the right thing to do!
Sentient promises new challenges to Gemma and Russ’s relationship, as they struggle to understand Gemma’s powers and the deep connection they share. New enemies appear to watch from every corner, ready to attack and strange alliances are about to be forged.

Original review can be found on my blog at this link.

Sentient is the 2nd novel in The Mentalist Series. If you have yet to read my book review of the 1st novel, Aversion, you can read the book review here. I would like to give a huge thank you to the author once again for giving me an opportunity to read her amazing trilogy in exchange for an honest review. 🙂

Nothing much really occur in Sentient. I would say that Sentient suffers from the 2nd book syndrome. In my opinion, Sentient is the bridging novel to link Aversion to the final novel in this trilogy, Keepers.

There is the introduction of several new characters in Sentient. We get to know their quirky personalities and the impact they have in changing the lives of Gemma and Russ.

Character development is prominent in Sentient. That is especially so for Gemma. She has trouble trusting over Averters because of her upbringing and even more so after the incident with Alice and Henry. She knows that she is different from others and people might be taking advantage of her abilities. Throughout the novel, we get to see the struggles Gemma face while trying to question who are the ones who she can trust and who are her enemies.

We also get to see Russ and Gemma’s relationship progression in Sentient. In the beginning, there are some strains to their relationship. However, the two of them soon overcome the hurdle and learn to accept the feelings they feel for one another. I love to read about a slow, developing chemistry between the characters in a novel. It is more fulfilling to read about their struggles, confusion and finally, realisation at the very end.

~SPOILERS~

In Sentient, Gemma found out more about the extent of her powers, including the link she has with Russ. Similarly, Gemma meets other Progressive Empaths who shed light on the identity of the Keepers to her. They tried to recruit her into joining their ‘cult’. Though nothing really much happened in Sentient, the appearance of the other Progressive Empaths created an air of mystery. I’m curious to find out more about them and the reason why they decided to work together to bring down the Keepers.

Overall, Sentient is a good quick read with substantial character development.

Book Review-
Starting With Summary

Being familiar with the first book of the Sentient series, I did look forward to see where Kenechi Udogu would take is characters next and how they would evolve, especially Gemma, being new to her abilities and a father she never new walking in and opening her eyes to a life that would be and is more complicated than her own wildest imagination.

Before starting off on my readings of Sentient (Book Two Of The Mentalist Series), I first started my review and reading with the summary, a glance at what is to come and opening into a tale of a girl, continuing her journey trying to discover herself and Master her Abilities. With this Summary alone, we learn a young girl is going through a complicated journey trying to understand Abilities as an Empath, also has a Sentient Ability that links her to a boy named Russ. For people first drawn to this novel, there are just enough details in the summary to make the reader wonder what the abilities Gemma has been fated with and wonder how the story will play out. For any sci-fi, fictional reader just by reading the summary is enough to make you wonder. The only thing I would add a line or two in after “Unsure of how to handle her Sentient Link with him….”, giving new readers who may not have come across the first book yet what the link is without giving it completely away, just enough to give a new reader enough information to go on and understand.

Overall this summary will grab most readers attention, you find it will get even more attention from fans or those who know the series or fans of the genre. A reader familiar with the series will be more familiar with the terminology, but that’s also what draws you in the pure curiosity and wanting to know more and learn more.

To The Book..

To fully understand Sentient (Book Two Of The Mentalist Series) , we need to have a little background on Sentient (Book One Of The Mentalist Series). In the first of the series we did not fully understand what happened with the character Russ Turner during Gemma Colts first Aversion. In the Sentient (Book Two Of The Mentalist Series), we learn more of what happened and get a better understanding of the character Gemma and who she is and more about her abilities.

A dilemma relayed between two characters, Russ and Gemma, and the intense feelings that are felt. Gemma wants to avoid Russ knowing she is an Averter, even with the knowledge of Russ wanting to touch her. For Gemma a dilemma occurred, recurring nightmares started that seemed all too much real. Gemma also had no one real to talk to; she could not talk to other Averters in her school because they didn’t like her kind….

Gemma’s journeys goes deeper into her own ability and her relationship with her dad, and her only friend, and close one at that Russ. We also get a deeper look into Gemmas life and the journey and tribulations as she travels as an Averter and Sentient.

[Summary, as taken from Amazon.]

---------

I liked that Sentient, the second book of Kenechi Udogu's The Mentalist Series, still maintains the easy-to-read, fast-paced action, as found in Udogu's first book of the same series (see: my review of Aversion).

On the contrary, what I didn't like, and what only hit me in this second book, is the lack of depth in the character of Russ. While there were moments wherein Russ shows some reaction to being a normal human thrown haphazardly into situations he doesn't fully understand, more often than not though, he seems all too blase - a feeling I don't think is characteristic of a fifteen-year-old, who lived all his life in a fairly small town. I think, in that regard, perhaps the fast pace of the book was a bit too fast-paced. Furthermore, the entirety of the second book apparently only took place over a week's time! While it's true that a week can seem longer in some circumstances, but with all the events that happened, surely it could have been spaced out over a longer period. The first book took a year, if I'm not mistaken.

In addition, what didn't work for me was the sudden introduction of way too many characters. Where in the first book, you only focused on three (3) main characters, with supporting mentions of three (3) others - by my count - the second book had FIVE (5) main players and a whole slew of supporting cast, with only four (4) of that number being introduced in the first book. While this may not be too much of a problem, in most cases, I felt that the fast-paced action of the book gave too much credit to several big events, without really going into the new subplots that cropped up along the way. Although, I realize, perhaps these will be addressed later on in the series.

With all this comparison between the first and the second book, I have to say that the tandem between the first and the last chapters worked this time around (see: my review of Aversion). In this book, I believe, Udogu was able to make use of her chosen literary tool - ie. a self-introduction by the main character - to properly introduce, and conclude the book.

Despite some of my above-mentioned comments, I do think this book is a step up to the first one, building on the intrigue faced by one Gemma Green. I'm looking forward to the next installment/s.

I have a secret crush on Russ. I liked Gemma and Laura, but there was just something missing for me. I read about the electricity between Russ and Gemma, but I didn't feel it. The characters show promise, but there wasn't enough suspense and feeling for my taste.

I didn't love the story, but I didn't not like it. I would read the next book to see what happens to Russ and Laura (Gemma isn't my favorite character) and it helps that the books are short and quick reads.

Likes:
* Russ is my favorite character and I didn't like them being unable to touch

Dislikes:
* Summary of 1st book was too much - Aversion is a short book and a 2 page summary was too much information. I'm glad I didn't read Sentient first or I would never have read Aversion.
* Safe word - Paul and Gemma should've had a code word, so Gemma would know if someone was trustworthy or at least that Paul had really sent them
* Sometimes Gemma and Russ spark and sometimes they don't

Some spoilers ahead.

Sentient started off as Gemma came back to Sandes but without her dad since he needed to be in hiding. The story progressed with Gemma feeling more troubled than ever what with her connection to Russ being a Sentient Twin (if her feelings for him are real or not), about her abilities, and missing her dad.

Her life isn't easy and simple as other Averters since she is a Progressive Empath although she's not the only one of her kind. For instance, Laura (a new character), is also a progressive empath and she came to help Gemma at the request of her father. I like Laura's character she seemed kind of bubbly but can be a badass gal as well. There are other progressive empath introduced as well and there's a new guy named Anthony who wanted to recruit Laura most especially Gemma for their cause against the Keepers (who acts like the leaders of the Averters) but even they are not honest about why they want to start another cull. Who are these people? And what are they hiding?

What I like about Sentient is that in a way Gemma is starting to improve for the better although the part where she tries to avoid Russ because she thinks her/his feelings is not real because of their connection is your typical cliche.

The antagonists well, I need to learn more about them before I make any comments. Sure, I know about who they are at the surface but that doesn't really say anything. And when it was the part were they forced Gemma to use her abilities I wanted to kick all their butts since I knew it was a trap and like what Laura said it was really a trap. The first time they approached Gemma and wanted to recruit her and Leah I thought it would be for the better but I had an inkling there's more to their plan and I was right. They want to use people like Gemma for the upcoming battle.

There are a lot more questions unanswered like the cull, the keepers, Gemma's evolving abilities, and her visions with Russ. They can also see visions when they are dreaming not just by being in physical contact. I also wonder why Russ and Gemma being a Sentient Twin is different from the others.

Another character who I wanted to find out the most was Peter. I find him interesting in Sentient and if he would be a friend or foe of Gemma's.

I can't wait for the next book.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sentient is the continuation of Aversion. Aversion was a fun, lovely, clean read and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Sentient was no different. While I feel I prefer Aversion over Sentient, I still enjoyed it. Sentient starts off where Aversion left off. Gemma's dad distances himself from her in order to keep them both safe. Her relationship with Russ is complicated at best and she won't let anything real happen between the two of them. After the realization of them being sentient twins, she knew any physical affection would cause jolts and energy between them. It wasn't always a good thing.

There was a little development in their relationship, but not a whole lot. This is where Gemma irritated me a little bit. It's important to not be afraid to live and let something good happen. She did get a little jealous, but it's kinda understandable in my opinion. Russ was still hanging out with his ex-girlfriend, who still CLEARLY had feelings for him. That would make me uncomfortable. However, Gemma wouldn't let their relationship be defined as boyfriend/girlfriend. He was still in the friend zone, so he could do what he wanted.

New characters are introduced, including Laura. I appreciated this character and liked her from the start. She was just like Gemma, a female averter, or a Progressive Empath. It's unknown for the majority of it as to whether she's on the good side or the bad side. Throughout the book, we learn more about her and her background.

There still wasn't much development in Russ' character. I still don't feel I know him very well. He's a hot, likeable, sweet athlete. Gotta love it! But since it's not from his POV, it's hard to know what goes on in his head.

It was a wonderful well-written and clean 2nd book with new twists and turns and new powers that Gemma never realized she had. It was a page turner and I can't wait for the 3rd book! I don't see it on goodreads, but I hope it'll come out soon!!

This was another page turner for me. I read it all in one go, I just couldn't put it down.

The second book in the series begins a few months after the last one. Gemma has spent the summer with her dad on the run. Now she's back at her old school with Russ, who didn't know she was coming back. After their last encounter they found out they have a huge connection to each other, yet Russ thought they would never see each other again.

Gemma has come back to try and figure out her powers and see if she can release the connection between her and Russ. Once she comes back there are a few issues that arise.

First she has to act "normal" and be friends with Russ' friends, which she's never had to do before. Then a quirky young woman comes to her home saying she's there to help her, she has a peculiar encounter with one of the other averters at her school while running the most unbelievable run she's ever had, and her relationship with Russ isn't all that great either. Little does she know these problems are nothing compared to the one that's coming.

I loved the first book in the series and I felt the same about this one. It was well written and relatable. I loved the new characters. I think my favorite is the quirky young mentor that was sent to help Gemma. She's a little off the wall sometimes, but I love her attitude. She grew up different from Gemma, she had no one to tell her why she was different and how to cope with it. She made up her own rules, so she didn't have anything holding her back. She was fun to "watch."

I can't wait for the next one and I'm sure it will be just as good as the first two...maybe better!
