Growing up in the cold, wet, north of England, Nina Croft spent a lot of time dreaming of faraway sunnier places and ponies. When she discovered both, along with a whole load of other things, could be found between the covers of a book, her life changed forever.

Later, she headed south, picked up the perfect husband along the way, and together they volunteered to work in Africa. There they discovered a love of exotic places and a dislike of 9-5 work. Afterward they spent a number of years travelling (whenever possible) intermingled with working (whenever necessary.) Eventually they stumbled upon a remote area in the mountains of southern Spain and the small almond farm they now call home.

Nina spends her days reading, writing and riding her mare, Gencianna, under the blue Spanish skies—sunshine and ponies. She reckons this is proof that dreams really can come true if you want them enough.

Nina's writing mixes romance with elements of the paranormal and science fiction

This is the third book in The Order series. Although it tells the story of a different couple, it would be advisable if you read the previous books before venturing into this instalment. In doing so, you will gain background information on the supporting cast featured in this instalment and learn about the inside operations of The Order of Shadow Accords.

I read the firsts two books awhile back. I received this book for review but never got around to reading it before now. I thought I would have problems getting into the story due the time I took to pick up this book. Fortunately, this was not the case. As I delved into the story, I remembered events from the previous books, which made it easy for me to be immersed in the book.

My Perspective

The Story.
If you love fast-paced, suspenseful action packed and sexy paranormal stories, then you will love this book. Based on my experience with the previous books in the series, I had high expectations for this instalment. I was not disappointed. This is not your typical paranormal romance. Yes, you will encounter the usual supernatural beings you find in this genre, but it so much more than that. It is a story of betrayal, redemption, second chances, forgiveness, healing and love.

This story introduces readers to a world where some supernatural beings, who make up the Order of Shadow Accords, are trying to create a world where they can co-exist with humans. However, other beings are not so keen on the idea and are willing to use any method possible to prevent the Order from achieving its goal. The Order is the police for the supernatural world, who metes out punishment to those beings who bring attention to themselves.

The suspenseful thread involves a group of people trying to bring down The Order by targeting the Christian Roth, a billionaire vampire one of the head honchos of The Order. This aspect of the story was entertaining and captivating. I liked that it did not overshadow the romance between Faith and Ash. In fact, both threads blended well to make for an exciting read.

The romance is not typical of what I generally see in this genre. This was not a case of the hero claiming the heroine as his from the moment he lays eyes on her. This was a case of instant attraction, which slowly grew into love. It also had its share of obstacles from both parties and external sources.

The Main Characters.

If you are a fan of heroines who are tough, self-reliant, sassy and tenacious then you will love Faith. She is human and does not believe there are supernatural beings walking the earth. When approached by a mysterious group to help them in their quest to take down Christian Roth. She thought it ludicrous and not intended to accept their offer. However, due to circumstances beyond her control, she ended up working for this mysterious group.

She has difficulty accepting the truth, even with the
evidence presented to her. She saw things as being black and white. You are either good or evil, there is no in between. This belief stemmed from an incident, which happened in her past to which she is yet to receive closure. However, she would soon come to realise that things were not as simple as she was led to believe.

When I met Ash in the previous book, I did not like him. I thought he was evil; after all, he is a demon. Well, in this instalment I discovered that there was more to him than I originally thought. He had a caring side which, he demonstrated by his actions towards his daughter, (who by the way hates him) and Faith. He had been on a quest for revenge, but his love for his daughter took precedence. He knew what it meant to be in love, but he thought those feelings were dead and buried, until that moment when Faith brought it back to life.

I loved how protective he was of Faith, even when he believed she had betrayed him and the other members of The Order. Watching him care her when she experienced here headaches was heart-warming and sweet. His reaction when he thought he was going to lose her was heart-breaking. I felt his pain throughout the ordeal. Who would believe the demon of lust had it in him to care about anyone but himself.

Conclusion
I appreciated how things worked out in the end as it relates to Ash’s relationship with his daughter and Faith. I was glad to see Faith finally getting the closure she craved in regards to the incident from her past. The ending was appropriate and nicely done. I do hope that the author will continue the series as there are characters who I would love to see them get their stories.

Recommendation
Fans of paranormal romance and strong sexy characters will enjoy Bittersweet Darkness.

I always believed that “bittersweet darkness” was just a description for especially delicious dark chocolate, until I got into Nina Croft’s Order series. The books are every bit as yummy (and addicting) as the best pure dark chocolate.

Like the other books in the series (Bittersweet Blood and Bittersweet Magic, both absolutely marvelous) Bittersweet Darkness is the story of a woman who has unknowingly been living a lie about her relationship to the supernatural, and a man who embodies everything that is dark, dangerous and otherworldly.

It’s not just about exploring the fire between Faith Connolly and Ash Delacourt, it’s about Faith finally discovering the truth about her past, and Ash figuring out that even a demon is capable of loving and being loved, even a second time around.

Ash Delacourt is a demon. In the first two books, he has been better known as Asmodai, a Prince of the Abyss. He’s also the father of Tara Roth, vampire Christian Roth’s wife. (Their story is the heart of Bittersweet Blood).

Tara and her dad have issues. Ash was using Tara to get back at Christian. By the time he discovered that Tara was the daughter he thought had died, Ash had done one heck of a lot of damage, and most of it to Tara.

Both Tara and Roz, the heroine of Bittersweet Magic, are mixed-blood. Tara is half-demon and half-fae. Roz is part-Angel. The fae hate mixed bloods, but the angels are positively rabid about it. They believe that any part-Angel is an abomination, and they want Roz obliterated.

Meanwhile, The Order of the Shadow Accords has created a Council that represents all the races, in the hopes of keeping all this internecine warfare from spilling over onto the unsuspecting original-recipe humans.

But it already has. They wiped out one crazed vampire who was going around exsanguinated young women, and leaving them for the human police to find. But one team of human police got a little too close for the Council’s comfort.

One partner was recruited, but the other refuses to admit that there might be anything supernatural in the world. Ms Oblivious is Faith, the heroine of Bittersweet Darkness. There’s a block in her mind that absolutely prevents her from believing in anything that goes bump in the night, even when confronted with incontrovertible evidence.

But she can’t let her last case alone. She believes that if she finds her serial killer, she’ll find a link to her own past. She doesn’t know that the Council has already wiped him out.

She also doesn’t have a clue that she’s absolutely right. There is a link to her past. The question is whether she can find resolution to her case, to both her cases, before the aneurysm in her head blows up and kills her.

And whether Ash is able to let another woman he loves die without a fight.

Escape Rating A-: Unlike the first two installments of the series, Faith starts the story as 100% human. A little too human in fact, as she has a ticking time bomb in her head in the form of an inoperable aneurysm. She wants to close that serial killer case, and find some answers, before she dies.

She has had an involvement with the supernatural, but she’s been blocked from remembering it. While it’s pretty clear early on that somebody messed with her mind, exactly who and exactly how is quite a surprise in the end, but it doesn’t change a lot about who Faith essentially is.

Faith doesn’t want to get involved with Ash because she knows that she can’t give him a future. She’s interested (very) in a fling, but she is dying and doesn’t want to break anyone else’s heart in the process.

Ash is the one who changes the most in this story, and in the course of the series. He starts out on a selfish quest for revenge in Bittersweet Blood, but by the time he meets Faith, he’s on the road to becoming a better man. He desperately wants a good relationship with his daughter, and he’s having to work damn hard to get halfway there (with good reason). But his need to make things up to Tara turns him outward in general, makes him less self-centered. It also helps him to heal from his loss of Tara’s mother, and he’s ready to let others into his life and heart.

He doesn’t plan on falling for Faith, but watching it sneak up on him is terrific. And nearly heart-breaking, both his and ours.

Wowzer she has done it again sucked me in and given me the best she has to offer with this one. When I was done though of course I am left well satisfied but will be wanting more knowing the wait will be well worth it. There is a prologue for those who have not read previous so not to be left in the dark ha ha. This picks up later where I was left from before so was ready to drink this one down in a heartbeat. Faith can not leave things alone when it comes to the investigation even after the news she has been given concerning herself. Now though she is no longer with her former partner Ryan cause he has left which has in itself left a range of emotions. She is approached by two characters that want her on their side whatever that may be even though they say government. Faith is a black and white type of girl and detective when it comes to things and how she deals. No hocus pocus or non humans for her either not real in her mind. She believes everything has an explanation including what has happened to those girls and how Ryan found Jessica. Then there is Asmodai-so glad he is being expanded even more and this is his chance to shine in this novel. Events cultivate that Faith and him meet through Ryan and this is where it really gets a rolling. Love a excellent paranormal romance where the world you are immersed in is filled with action because of the good guys verses the bad guys. Drama between characters brought to living color by the gift of the author writing and let's not forget the romance. Mutual attraction is so special in these novels and that includes Faith and Asmodai. The heat that rolls off of these two when they do get together better wear something light and when they come together loving each other lots of cool water might be good also. The funny thing about Faith is her denial and when confronted with the evidence she is wrong the reasons come to light. Good intrigue a must and is in this novel. Good thing about love true that is it accepts the one as they are regardless and breaks down all barriers if it is real. Questions are answered in this novel and the order just become more endearing to me. Repair in damaged relationships also in this one even though it required hair raising action and danger to put it in motion.Hats off to this author for delivering yet another wonderful read in this series and as I have said looking forward to the next one. Received an arc for a honest review.

Faith has decided to give up her last days for the chance to bring justice to a killer and peace to a victim. Ash has fallen for Faith, but wjat will he do to save her from certain death. Nina Croft has woven a story of suspence, romance and hope.

My rating of "Bittersweet Darkness" is 4.75 out of 5 stars.

Really enjoyed this. Some surprising plot twists. Good characters. Like how some of the issues from the previous two books in the series are continued here. Looking forward to next in series.

REVIEW: BITTERSWEET DARKNESS is the third instalment in Nina Croft’s contemporary, adult THE ORDER paranormal/fantasy series focusing on the men and women who work for The Order of the Shadow Accords. This is demon Asmodai (aka Ash Delacourt) and Detective Inspector (and human) Faith Connolly’s storyline.

The premise follows Faith Connolly as the latest recruit by a group known as MI13. MI13 is on the hunt –looking for someone connected to vampire Christian Roth (former head of The Order)-and will stop at nothing to get what they want. Enter Detective Faith Connolly, a non-believer in everything supernatural and the perfect foil with her connections to someone close to The Order. As Faith continues to investigate the strange murders of young women, she will come face to face with the man who would one day save her life. Faith’s loyalty will be tested when she uncovers the truth behind MI13 and the people at the top. There are no grey areas in Faith’s world, but the black and white begins to blur when the reality of her situation becomes all too clear.

Asmodai hasn’t had a lover in years and Faith’s presence calls to his heart. Working with The Order as the demon representative for the Committee for the Integration of Mankind, Ash is commissioned to uncover the ‘who and what’ behind Faith Connelly and finds himself falling for the spunky human with a secret that could very well end her life. When one of The Orders own goes missing, Faith is at the top of the list of suspects when betrayal and heartbreak point in her very direction.

The attraction between Ash and Faith is immediate. Something about Faith calls to Ash’s soul and it has been a very long time since Ash has felt anything for another woman. The sex scenes are intimate, hot and seductive-Ash is a demon who knows what it is every woman wants-and Faith wants Ash-if only for a very short time.

Nina Croft writes another fascinating and action-packed storyline where The Order of Shadow Accords finds themselves on the defensive against an enemy they know only too well. Nina combines a world of supernatural beings including vampires, werewolves, fae, shifters, demons and angels into a spirited and clever story-and you may hazard a guess as to which group has the reputation for being evil and unkind.

BITTERSWEET DARKNESS is an imaginative tale of betrayal and heartache; seduction and sex; friendship and love. The secondary characters continue to drive a good portion of the series-this is an ensemble storyline where everyone has a role to play in the survival of the supernatural powers.

If you are a fan of the paranormal, you MUST put Nina Croft’s THE ORDER series at the top of your list.

Bittersweet Darkness (The Order 3) Nina Croft
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
This series has hooked me right from the first book, and now I’ve read three I understand book one even better, first books have a hard task, setting characters, a current plot and needing an over them to pull each book together. Though I loved it I understand everything so much better now that the world they are operating in is clear in my mind.
This one, book three has Detective Faith Connolly still trying to find the killer of a young girl in the last book. Of course she can't, as he was a vampire and is dead, but hard as she pushes him as she's human her ex colleague Ryan can't tell her that. He was involved, being her then partner in the police force, and being more open minded that Faith (Vampires Do Not Exist!) he's been recruited by Christian Roth's Security organisation, which is also a cover for the order. That’s undergoing some changes, and Ryan is partnered with Ash ( demon Lord Asmodai) on a new formed committee spearheading changes. Ash has recently found his daughter Tara, who he'd thought dead. She's partner to Christian Roth, and holds Ash responsible for her best friends death. Its all themes from earlier books that run through the whole series and bind it together tightly. Faith gets enmeshed in danger, Ash gets involved with Faith, far more closely than he expected, there's ever present danger not only from the Angels but from the UK government, and Faith is used by them. She's so on the side of good its a while before she realises what's happening, that Ash and co are the good guys and the Gov spooks the bad ones, and by then she feels Ash and his colleagues will never believe her when she says she was trying to stay on the side of right. She can't just walk away though, and puts herself in danger trying to help. Not only that she's another serious problem facing her too – and it's one that she can't walk away from.
Its the usual mix of danger and romance, sexy, hot males and sensual encounters. Having to convince a human that the supernatural is real without terrifying them, trying to look at a problem from the outside as Faith is, and decide just who is on the side of right, who can she trust, and all the while coping with that other problem hanging over her like the Sword of Damocles. What I love about Nina's writing is that its not dumbed down as so many paranormals are, it's intelligent and well scripted, and yet is easy to follow, it takes the reader along with the action, the plots are all connected in some way, and what seems like a minor detail – a throwaway comment- turns out to have major impact. Each book is connected by an overall theme, and yet is a standalone with a plot that is just for that story and complete. I don't know how long this series is planned, but I hope there's lots more to go, as I feel its so fresh its got potential for a good few books yet :) and I’m hoping of course! Its priced at just £1.25 for 251 pages, so a good length to get really into the characters and the situations they faced, and a bargain price!
Stars: five.

This review and more can be seen at http://gothicmoms.blogspot.com/

I had been waiting impatiently for this book to come ever since I read Bittersweet Magic, longing to see what was in store for one of my favorite demons, Asmodai. I am happy to say Croft did NOT disappoint.

Asmodai has gone by many different names, Ash Delacourt, Demon of Lust, Prince of Darkness, but none does he crave more than the name Father. After losing the only woman with the ability to break through with black heart, his wife Lily, the only woman's affection he has craved is that of their daughter he believed to be dead, Tara. But after ordering her best friend to be brutally murdered, successfully, that seems like a pretty impossible feet. Even after he goes to his best friend Luc, Lucifer himself, to procure a present for her. A gift that comes with a price on his part they may lead to him falling for yet another female, a frail human woman, something he always vowed he would not do. And that woman, with her fiery spirit and strictly black and white attitude has a ticking time bomb getting ready to go off inside of her that will cut whatever time they may have shorter than he realizes.

Faith is one of those women that lives in a world with rose colored glasses; everything is black and white, good or bad with no room for nothing in between. A world where no ghosts or ghoulies exist. So when she is offered a position at a government facility, by a Priest and ex-Military man no less, a faction called MI13 that is investigating Christian Roth whom they tell her is a vampire, it takes all of self-control to not fall out of her chair laughing. Though even when undeniable physical evidence is right in her face, she still can't except it, as though an impenetrable wall comes up at the mention of the word Vampire. A wall that has been there since her mother was murdered and her body found by Faith when she was only twelve years old. Being forced to take the job, she refuses to spy on her former partner, Ryan, but she may cede to spy on Ash. After-all, there is nowhere she take the attraction she reluctantly feels for him. Not when her Government, the good guys, have deemed the people he works for as bad. But her righteous government is about to do something so heinous that she will have to change the way she view things.

Full of action, heat, lust, violence, intrigue and most importantly characters readers will actually feel a vested interest in, Bittersweet Darkness is a true must read. Just not if you are righteous, holier than thou, squeamish or believe that vampires should sparkle and Angels only create miracles. Because in this world, Demons may be the not-so-bad guys and Angels the not-so-good guys. And I am also happy to say that Croft has proven to be one of those authors with the ability to surprise even me, which is saying something after all the Paranormal books I have read.

Yes, this can be read as a stand alone, though I recommend reading the entire series'.

I've only recently discovered this authors work and as a lover of paranormal fiction I'm so very glad I have. Ms Croft writes stories that just capture my imagination and I find them almost impossible to put down until I have finished reading them. If you are looking for a new name in sexy paranormal books then you have definitely found her!
This is the third book in this authors The Order series that features demons, vampires, the Fae, witches , weres, and even angels! The books are linked but easily read as standalone novels as each one features a different couple.
Set in London ( I'm so bored of Washington and New Orleans in paranormal romance) The Order are trying to unite the supernatural world and prevent war . Asmodai also known as Ash, is the demon representative and finds himself drawn to Faith a police detective who suspects something is wrong about her friend Ryan's new job but she has no idea just what exactly she's stumbled upon. Trying to solve her case she's plunged into a world where nothing is quite what it seems. Faith believes strongly in doing what is right and is cynical about all things that go bump in the night but when she's reassigned and told that vampires are real well that's a little too much for her! The world is black and white , people are good or bad and the supernatural is hogwash but she's expected to swallow that! Faith is no fool but getting close to Ash is starting to change her life in more ways then one but Ash isn't the only one with a secret and the one Faith has is deadly!
This is a great read filled with interesting characters and I loved the way the author kept the sexual tension going for so long. Ash is one smoking hot demon but he's almost sweet which is a strange thing to think about a demon but somehow Ms Croft has pulled it off. The heroine Faith has gone through so much and yet has remained quite stoic but her reactions to the possibilities of a paranormal world were quite entertaining. That's something else about this book that worked, as readers we get to know what the characters are thinking which really helps pull the reader further into the world that the author is weaving.
This was an entertaining read that kept me up late to finish it. An unusual story with an assortment of interesting characters and great world building. Bad guys who are surprising and I've a sneaky feeling that maybe one of those might get his own book. Oo I do hope so! If anyone can turn him around its Ms Croft! This book was such fun to read and I happily recommend it to anyone who likes to read a slightly different type of romance . An interesting way of finding a solution at the end and even a question left in the readers mind about how things will proceed next. Now I can't wait for the next book and I'm hoping it's soon!

Faith has never believed in any type of supernatural monster. Even when signs point to what looks like a vampire she will not believe it. The detective has a crime she wants to see solved before her time is up. She doesn't have a lot of time as her health is rapidly going but she vows she will put a figure out this crime. She comes in contact with Ash as she investigates and while he has the bad guy look and feel to him she see can't help but want him. Asmodai has a debt to pay and part of that debt is working for the Order of the Shadow Accords. He now goes by Ash and is the demon representative for the new Committee for the Integration of Mankind. He gets the chance to be his daughter and maybe make things better between them. Faith makes him want something he hasn't wanted in a long time. As he helps her and they become closer he helps her deal with the fact those monsters she has never believed in may be real. Faith will have to look deep to see who the real monsters are and while she is falling for Ash she also knows her time is running out and she can't let Ash get to close.

Faith is a wonderful detective who lets nothing stand in her way of solving a crime and hoping it will help her figure out her mothers murder years ago. She has the chance to work for a place that will help her solve them but they seem crazy to her as they believe in monsters and she doesn't. She isn't thrilled with her job and the people she now finds she works for. They do have resources she needs but they want her to spy on her friend and believe some people are all evil. She doesn't ever seem to give up and she doesn't want anyone to know she is sick. Ash is so dark and sexy. He has done bad things before but he is working at being better. There isn't much he wouldn't do for his daughter. Faith makes him feel something he hasn't felt in years and he will do many things to protect her. Even when she wants to push him away he makes a hard choice and does whatever it takes for her.

This is a wonderful series that I can't get enough of. You don't have to read them in order but it will help knowing all the characters and really it is so good I would tell you to anyway. If you like paranormal books than you will enjoy this one. It has vampires, demons, witches, angels and so much more. You really get to see all kinds. You also get to see a different side of angels that you wouldn't expect. There is tons of action and you never get bored. Faith protects those she thinks need it and will jump into danger if it means she can save someone. Ash is so tough and you get to see him as he pulls out all the stops. There is also romance and love as Ash and Faith fall for each other but they have so many things to work through. I eagerly look forward to the next book in this series as I have to see more of these great characters.

This book had a bit of everything that I like – action, romance, angst, tension, supernatural creatures, sexy alpha males, kick-ass heroines…yep, a bit of everything! Even though I haven’t read the first two books in this series, it was easy to follow the story and I don’t feel that I missed anything at all. I really liked the world that Nina Croft has created and liked how all the different supernatural creatures interacted with one another.

Faith’s character was great - her black & white view of things and her belief in good guys vs. bad guys was so key to her actions and personality and really drove her loyalty and commitment to those she was friends with and those she was protecting. It was awful all the pain in her life, starting with her mother being murdered and then finding out she had a terminal illness. I loved her reaction to Ash – although she had a lust-at-first-sight reaction to him, there was no way she was going to go for the bad boy type – and Ash was as bad boy as they come, right down to his leather pants…
“For one thing, he wasn’t her type. Not that she had a type. She hadn’t dated in over two years. No wonder she was feeling horny. But if she did have a type, he wouldn’t be it. She liked nice men who wore smart suits and worked in offices. She was a sucker for a man in a tie and she was betting Ash had never worn one in his life.”

Faith also does not believe in monsters – no way do they exist in her world! But when her investigation ends up landing her working for a secret government organization who is investigating the existence of these monsters, she ends up coming face to face with everything she doesn’t believe in…and also with the realization that perhaps lines aren’t always so clearly drawn between good and bad.

Ash was quite the character, sexy as sin in his human form. As a demon he pretty much takes what he wants and uses his demon wiles to get whatever he sets his sights on – and he sets his sights on Faith from the first moment he sees her. Even though all he can think about is getting her into his bed, he really ends up being quite the gentleman and even a bit over-protective of Faith at times – and I loved it! And when they finally do get together…wow, lots of sparks!

Although the story started off a little slow for me, it didn’t take more than a few chapters for the pace to pick up and for me to get totally engrossed in the story. I loved the banter between Ash and Faith, and I absolutely loved Faith’s ex-partner Ryan. The rest of the secondary characters were great and I can’t wait to go back and read the first two books to read more about them. A great overall read!

This is the 3rd book of the 'Bittersweet' series and is by far the best series out of all them! Nina croft has skills! not only can can she spin a story that is superb, she can also write several series at one time that manages to snare you in to her world of paranormal. Kudos to you Miss.Croft! Asmodia is a demon of lust and proud papa of Tara, whom isn't to found of dear ole pops and lets not get started on how Christian Roth hubby of Tara feels about him. So when luc the devil tells Ash his just been recruited as a representative for the demons and is gonna be working with son-n-law and the rest of the gang well hell! Shit hits the fan! Ash is no slob at 6'5 that walks with the grace of a cat and oozing of sex appeal that demon can get any woman he wants but that's just not him. Ash hasn't had any desires for any female since Tara's mom passed away 20yrs ago until Faith walks in looking for her ex-partner Detective Ryan whom now works with the vamps and demon as a human liaison. Electricity literally sparks between the two and gets Ashe's libido out of hibernation normally a sexy man interested in her wouldn't be a problem but Faith has several issues going on and a ticking time bomb called an annerysium which can kill her at any moment and can be triggered by stress, is a doozy! So when Faith is thrown into a world where monsters really do exist! bits and pieces of the murder of her mom by a monster that she don't believe in are trying to resurface which causes horrible migraines thus speeding up her death, which just sucks! Just when her life was starting to get interesting thanks to sexy Ash being in her life the grim reaper comes a calling but not before Tara is kidnapped by Micheal the archangels goons and held prisoner and Faith knows who did it and where she's at but because she doesn't know which side is good or bad she keeps her mouth shut in the mean time the gang are going nuts and Ash is losing it! his only kid is missing! Faith could spare them all so much anguish if she just opened her mouth and tells them where she's at. Ha! it's not that easy, to many decisions and she has no idea which one to make. I bet your asking does she say something and will it be too late? Does faith die? Ahhh! Read the book and find out. This is an awesome story so much going on. The characters are intense and the emotions you can practically feel them as your own. I love this book and series. I can't wait for the next one. Thanks Entanglement for introducing me to this series and the talented Miss.Croft.

My Review:
I loved everything about this book. I've read a few other books by Nina Croft, but this was the first book I've read from this series. Although it was obvious which characters featured in the first two books, I didn't feel like I was ever missing out on anything by dropping into the series at book #3.

This book features Faith, a detective who sees everything as black and white. There are no gray areas for her. Her long-time partner has just quit to go work for a mysterious company. She's also in the process of finding out that she probably is dying because she has a blood vessel in her head that could burst at any point. She's trying to solve a mysterious serial killer case which has all the signs of pointing to a vampire....something that Faith refuses to even consider...monsters aren't real. In the middle of it all, she's forced into a reassignment working for paranormal investigations...not great for the girl who absolutely does not believe in paranormals of any sort. Just don't tell her that her new boyfriend is a demon and there are all kinds of things out there that go bump in the night.

Like I said, I really, really liked this story. I love how tough and independent Faith is...she's truly alone in this world and my heart hurt for her throughout so much of this book. She's so lonely. But Ash has that issue, too. He hasn't been involved with anyone in 23 years when his heart was shattered. He has no desire to ever put his heart out there like that again...but he keeps feeling the pull to Faith, which is the worst thing in the world since she is especially vulnerable as a human. He doesn't even know about the time-bomb in her head.

I liked the set-up of the romance and the story and the world. It was interesting. The whole premise is that the supernatural beings are setting the groundwork for outing themselves to humans which is creating new partnerships within those groups...but not everyone is happy about that. In this book, there is definitely a switch around with the parameters of good and evil and how the traditional elements like demons and angels aren't what humans have always thought. I loved it. I need to go back and read the first two books and definitely look forward to more books that take place in this world.

Due to my overabundance of excitement at the premise of this book, I didn't notice that Bittersweet Darkness is actually the third book in a series. My fault entirely. So, yes I did scramble for purchase a bit as I found my place in Faith's story. Still, this is a solid read even as a standalone! Nina Croft's writing has the ability to pull you straight down into the story. I might have been missing some details about the pasts of these characters, but in reality I didn't feel the sting too much. In fact, I've found a new world to love. You can bet that this bookworm is headed back to read the first two of these, as soon as possible.

Now on the to the actual review, shall we? Faith's character was absolutely wonderful. I have a place in my heart for characters like her. Characters who are loyal and kind, but also have no problem kicking ass when the situation calls for it. To Faith, the world lies in absolutes. There are good guys, and there are bad guys. There is darkness, and there is light. Most of all, monsters don't exist. Or do they? I watched as Faith's ideals were put into question, and I was so impressed. She's strong. She's fierce. Best of all? Faith isn't swayed by the bad boy type. That alone makes her a winner in my book.

Speaking of the bad boy type, Ash definitely fits that description. It still makes me giggle to call a demon "sexy", but there's no other word to describe it. In his human form, Ash is unstoppable. He's intelligent, sarcastic, and yet just enough of a gentleman to make him delicious. Pardon my gushing, but he is definitely worth swooning over. The banter between Ash and Faith is filled with sass and sparks! I'd have loved Faith no matter what, but Ash definitely complimented her perfectly.

Let's be honest, I'm a fan of PR. I eat Urban Fantasy up like it's candy. So it's really no surprise that I loved the premise of Bittersweet Darkness, what with it's action and intrigue. However that only scratches the surface of my enjoyment. Nina Croft's writing is easy to read, and fun to get lost in. This book is only a little over 250 pages, but I would have happily read for hundreds more. I loved the characters, I loved the world, and I honestly can't wait for more.

Bittersweet Darkness is the third book in Nina Croft's The Order series and can be easily read as a stand alone.

The story starts off with our heroine Faith chasing down a lead on a murder that she is currently investigating with her partner. Just as she closes in on him she blacks out. We find out that she has a ticking time bomb in her head, a massive aneurism that is building and it's just a matter of time before it ends her life. She is determined to find the person responsible for the murder and see that justice is served. Faith is a pretty straight forward person and views life in black or white, good or evil with nothing in between. You have to be one or the other in her opinion and is very rigid when it comes to changing her views even when it is waved right in her face.

That being said, I really liked her. She was tough and didn't put up with crap from anyone. She also didn't curl up in a ball and give up when she found out about her terminal condition. She was determined to solve the case before her time was up.

Now we come to Asmodai aka: Ash. I loved him! The perfect bad boy, even though he was in denial about his feelings for a fragile human. I loved how he always took care of Faith when one of her migraines struck. Even when he thought she may have been responsible for his daughter's kidnapping he still took care of her and protected her from the others.

This story had a lot of action, suspense, angst and steam! When they all get to Hell that's when everything comes to a head and before they have a chance to sort things out the time bomb in Faith's head goes off.... OMG I bawled like a baby!!! Not many books get my waterworks going but this one did. What a heart wrencher and what a surprise as well! Want to know what happened at the end? Get the book, you won't regret it.

Excellent PNR by Nina Croft and another great series that I will definitely be adding to my must read list.

The third book in The Order series is a thrilling and entertaining read.

Faith discovers she a time bomb counting down in her head and focuses on solving the murder case she’ working on, a young girl who was drained in blood and in the course of her investigation comes into contact with Ash Delacourt, black leather, big guns and sexy bad attitude. As payment for a debt, Asmodai (Ash) finds himself as the new representative for the newly formed Committee for the Integration of Mankind and … well everything else and maybe he’ll have a little fun with the delectable detective on the side. Faith finds herself falling in love for the bad guy, but how can she let him get close when her time is running out?

This fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps the reader on the edge of their seat with lots of suspense, action, revelations and romance. The story captures the imagination with vivid imagery and detail that make the reader feel as if they are part of the story and the characters are strong and draw the reader deeper into the story.

The attraction between Ash and Faith burns up the pages and the sex scenes are hot and steamy, leaving the reader scorched with passion. The reader’s hearts are captured by the strong, tough detective who finds herself lost in a world that she was sure did not exist and the further complication of her illness. Ash is Alpha bad guy that every woman secretly yearns for and makes the reader shiver in delight.

The author keeps the reader guessing with some surprises that the reader doesn’t see coming and the reader becomes enthralled by the characters and keep coming back for more to find out what will happen next within the order. I was captivated from the beginning of the series and this book certainly lived up to the others, I don’t know if the Nina Croft plans on more books for this series, but I certainly hope so, there are more characters that I want to hear more from.

At this point I don't think there could be anything written by Nina Croft that I would not like. She just has a way with stories and I am so glad I found her books.

Faith is a bit different from the other female leads in this series. She is 100% human and believes nothing of the supernatural world. Little does she know that she is more connected with the world than she ever knew and her life is about to change forever. I honestly had my doubts about Asmodai and his ability to fall in love with another woman and treat her right. WOW did he show me. He is seriously night and day from the Ash we met in the beginning of the series. I am so excited that I got to witness his transformation.

The attraction between the two is pretty instant. Ash is pretty aggressive in his advances on Faith and Faith is pretty hesitant to get involved with him for many reasons, the biggest being that she is dying. Poor Faith really doesn't know what she is getting involved in for most of the book and I did enjoy her reactions as things were revealed.

As you know by now, the stories of each book are linked to the others. I really love how involved the other characters are involved in each installment. The relationships between characters continue to grow as the series evolves and the team is really coming together nicely. You CAN read the books as standalone books but I would not recommend it.

There were a lot of great moment in BITTERSWEET DARKNESS, lots of action and suspense as well emotions. The pace is just as brisk as the first two books and I have no doubt books to come will be the same. I have a few guesses on who will be one part of the next love interest but I honestly don't know if I am right and I cant wait until its revealed.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy

While a fun paranormal romance, I’m disappointed to say that BITTERSWEET DARKNESS just didn’t live up to my expectations of The Order series. Sometimes, it just felt like the book was trying too hard – dialogue felt forced, and the action seemed contrived. I enjoyed the book, but this one won’t be one of my favorites of the series.

Don’t get me wrong – Ash sounded like sex on a stick, really, and the scenes between him and Faith were hot, but they felt either on or off, there was no in the middle flirtiness, in my opinion. Plus, it squicked me out a little that Ash’s daughter was similar in age to Faith. While I understand, logically, that the vampires are old and obviously there’s a large age difference between Tara and Christian, for example, it’s weird when there is the obvious reminder of a child similar in age to the paramour.

As usual, however, I did enjoy delving deeper into the world of The Order – visiting Ash’s home in the Abyss was certainly a new aspect that we hadn’t seen previously, and watching Ash navigate his rocky relationship with his daughter was fun. You get the impression that he’s not frequently at a loss, and with Tara, he definitely is. Seeing Christian, Piers, Tara and Roz was fun, plus cameos by other characters we’ve come to know, like Ryan, from the previous book, and the Walker, the crazy fae assassin.

Since I’ve read enough of Croft’s work to know that BITTERSWEET DARKNESS is the exception, not the rule, I am looking forward to the next book in The Order series. Pick this one up for Ash though, because in that respect, he’s totally worth it. ;)

This was my second book by Nina Croft and I definitely loved it ... to tell the truth, after the first (from another series) I was not convinced I would read another one written by her but thank good, I got this one and I am really happy about it.

this is the third book in "The Order" series, but they can be read as stand-alone. but I definitely will read the first two books now!

in this book Faith, a detective, has to solve a murder, where the victim was drained. her partner is starting a new job and a new partner, Ash. as soon as they meet, you can feel the sparks flying - I absolutely loved the tension between them and the growing attraction. the dialogues and interaction between these two are great and they are lovers and adversaries at the same time.

the suspense and action in this book is really good and keeps you on your toes. the story is very well paced and the world building is absolutely interesting. as this was my first book from this series I could see through Faith eyes and it was interesting to discover things.

the characters are well built - Ash is definitely an Alpha male with bad guy vibes but he learned from the mistakes of his past. Faith is a strong character who sees the world in black and white and always wanted to be part of the good guys.

I really hope that there will be more books in this series as there are a lot more characters to discover. without having read the first two books I loved it that Mrs. Croft involved the other couples in this book

all in all it was a nearly perfect read and I enjoyed it.

It seems I just could not get enough of Nina Croft this week. I received Bittersweet Darkness from Netgalley and read it right after Death Defying. Bittersweet Darkness is book three in The Order series and I had not read book one, Bittersweet Blood or book two, Bittersweet Magic. It did not take me long to see that Bittersweet Darkness it worked very well as a stand along. I knew I was missing back-story on some of the characters but there was enough dropped into the dialog and action that I never felt lost.

Faith Connolly is the main female character in the story and I loved her. She had a blind spot (there are no monsters) but did not realize it. She was very focused on her job and loyal to the people she worked for. When she things started to go wrong she had to move past that blind spot to do what was right. It was very had but she had the strength to do what needed to be done.

Ash Delacout is the main male character and he is a monster. He thinks he is unable to love and knows that even if he is able he is unwilling to love. Faith just knocks him off balance. He has to admit his feelings and accept that Faith has always acted in an honorable manner.

Throw in the angles who do not want change, the fact that the modern world is going to discover that demons, vampires and others are real, that some are working to make sure that happens in an orderly fashion and the plot points are set up for an exciting story.

There is action, suspense, danger, and romance all mixed up in a great story. Bittersweet Darkness is a fun quick paranormal read that held my attention throughout the story.

***Received from Entangled Publishing for an honest review***

Skepticism in the paranormal is understandable. "I'll believe it when I see it" makes sense when it comes to this sort of thing. In Faith's case, her disbelief in the paranormal realm seemed to stem from...nothing. At least nothing she could accurately place a finger on. But I loved how that disbelief graduated to belief through circumstances and events, assisted by old friends and new, and culminating in a revelation that left me stunned.

It's easy to admire and love Ash. He wronged his daughter and is trying to make amends. He's protective of those he's temporarily assigned to work with even though he's not supposed to be. And he's a gentleman when it comes to Faith, not just physically but always. He saw her disbelief in all things paranormal. It amused him but he didn't t make light of it, didn't belittle her. He could've turned all demon-y on her, scared the crap out of her, and proved without a shadow of a doubt that things like him exist. But he didn't.

While this is part of a series, it read like a standalone. The characters were enchanting, the plot fast but detail-oriented. Emotions ran from one end of the spectrum to the other, but nothing seemed forced. Everything moved and flowed seamlessly, fluidly, and I loved that I felt like I was part of the story as opposed to a onlooker.

I've had a delightful taste of the characters of The Order. I can't wait to find out about the others. Wonderful work, Ms. Croft. Thank you for creating an organization dealing with the Unseen while dealing with everyday issues that humans encounter.

I wasn't terribly excited about reading this book, simply because it was smack dab in the middle of a series. Reading out of order gives me hives and leaves me feeling a bit faint. Getting into this though, was easy. It was explanatory without me feeling like I was being told the entirety of the previous stories.

Detective Faith Connelly is investigating the murder of a teenage girl when she's abruptly removed from her position in homicide to work for a secret division of the British government. Faith doesn't believe in the paranormal, things are strictly black and white for her. Bad guys are bad, good guys are good and there is no such thing as monsters. I liked Faith's belief in herself and the things she stands for. She sticks to her guns without being a close-minded hard ass.

Ashton Delacourt is a demon from the underworld assigned as the demon representative of an initiative to reveal the supernatural to the human race. This is one sexy demon. He was arrogant, but not so much that he was slappable. He seemed to know how Faith needed to be treated, giving her the independence she needed and protecting her.

The sex was hot and sweet and with just enough kink to leave you wanting more. I give this book 4 stars and am immediately adding the rest of this series to my TBR list.

I haven't read the first book in the series but I read the second. You can bet after reading this one I will be going back and reading the first one. It did not disappoint. Nina has a way of writing that just sucks me right into the story and I had a hard time putting the book down, much to my husband's dismay.

This book puts detective Faith Connolly together with Ash. Ash just happens to be a demon. Faith doesn't believe in monsters. She was compelled by a vampire to not remember he killed her mother and to believe monsters don't exists. And the problems just keep coming. She is falling for Ash, confused about everything he is involved in, not sure about the job she has been forced to take, and to top that off she doesn't have that long to live. Yep this book is full of twists and turns and keeps you interested to the very end.

What is Bittersweet Darkness by Nina Croft? First and foremost, it is a captivating paranormal read. I have not read the first two in the series but this one convinced me that I just had to, so I’ve already bought them. Let me be clear that it’s not that you are unable to follow the story line without the first two, but as you read, you want to know more about this group of characters and their world. This story is that good. This series is now on my 2014 favorites list. The book is full of unique twists and turns, even at the beginning with Faith’s blackout. I started it thinking that the romance would between Ryan and Faith. Boy, was I soon to learn differently. Vampires, fae, witches, demons and angels with a few humans are all in this tale. It’s a perfect blend of tight clean writing around a suspenseful plot and intriguing characters, with just the right amount of romance thrown in for good measure. I loved it!

Faith Connolly believes in truth and justice. She has spent her life working to make sure that the good triumphs. Her mother's murder kept her focused. Now she is facing some very hard truths. She is not invincible. Even more devastating is the reality that the good guys may not be so good. She is overwhelmed, but she won't give up. She goes to her former partner, Ryan, for assistance and meets Asmodai. He is handsome, sexy and very much into Faith. The stage is set for a wild ride. Bittersweet Darkness is filled with drama, suspense and a very sensual romance. Nina Croft has written an intriguing story that has unforgettable characters. Faith and Ash set the pages on fire. Their romance is that hot. I loved the dialogue and interaction between these two. They are both lovers and adversaries. Also, I was fascinated by the Archangel Raphael. He's not what I expected. If you love a paranormal story with non-stop action this is the book for you.

What a fantastic read. Great characters ...descriptive scenes....hot..sexy..vampires and demons that make a girl want to be bad. Faith always sees things in black and white ....good and bad..but with an illness hanging over her head she is introduced into a paranormal world she refuses to believe. As she is sucked into a fight between angels and vampires....demons and fae her world opens up and the things she thought were monsters turn out to be the good guys and with Ash's love he finds a way to save her.

There's a lot going on in this book and because of it I found myself reading tillni finished the book and now want more. Very well written. I could picture every aspect the writer penned. I highly recommend it.

Nina Croft has always had a way of sucking me right into her stories and this book is no exception. If you have not picked up the other books in this series I highly recommend that you do. In this particular story we get to watch one of the Demon princes of hell fall in love with a human. Faith (the human in this particular book) has no idea that anything supernatural exists. In fact she firmly is against EVER being made to believe such things. Things from her past bring her to an unexpected place and she learns many new things not only about herself and her past but about the world as she once knew it. I can’t go into much detail without giving too much away. All I can say is that if you are looking for a great book to sweep you away this is definitely the book for you!

Bittersweet Darkness is the third book in the Order series. The interaction between the characters is wonderful and so well written that I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I have enjoyed each one of the stories and like how they can be read on their own, but I recommend that they are read in order since many of the characters are in all the books. I hope there will be more books in this series.
