Álmok Bandája

Rate this book

Life is tough and brutal for Cetta Luminita at 14 , living in southern Italy in poverty , so she runs runs away with her infant son and does whatever she has to in order to get passage to America. And it continues to be a tough life for her as a prostitute doing whatever she has to do for her son , Natale who in America is now called Christmas. It's a tough life for Christmas too . Amidst the violence of Italian and Jewish gangs , it is this young boy's imagination and story telling abilities that save him.

I almost put this book aside . There are such violent scenes and I just didn't want to read these but I did . There are explicit sexual scenes and I'm certainly not prudish but in some places they just did not add to the story . Yet the story held me. I was drawn to Cetta and Christmas and their hopes and dreams and I was heartbroken for Ruth and so I kept reading. In spite of its length , it moved fairly quickly and it was definitely the characters that held me. Besides Cetta , Christmas, and Ruth , there are other characters that will steal your heart - the big seemingly heartless Sal, who is caring even though stubborn at times , the ever loyal friend Santo , and even the big man gangster Rothstein , who gives Christmas the gift of getting him off the streets. There's also the despicable Bill whose actions will chill you to the bone and Ruth's mother who is just plain heartless and selfish .

The backdrop is America from 1909 when Cetta and her infant son embark on their journey to America through the late 1920's . A view of the Immigrant experience moving from the lower east side of New York City to Hollywood . It could be confusing if you don't take note of dates on chapters as the story moves around in time . The gangs and violence of New York , the impact of radio, the making of movies, Broadway , the American Dream - it's all there . I also found characters who were persistent and strong in the face of adversity, what it means to be a family, friendship and love .

I loved that Christmas told stories, wanted to tell them on the radio so Ruth would find him . I loved that Sal wanted to take care of Cetta and I loved that Cetta was strong in spite of it all and did not let go of her dream for her son.

Sometimes when I read a translation, I wonder if I've lost something in the language change but I didn't feel that way here . Maybe it was a little long and maybe a little predictable but I enjoyed Christmas' journey from boyhood to manhood and seeing the realization of his dreams.

Thank you to Bastei Entertainment and NetGalley.

Oi kaip seniai skaičiau kažką panašaus. Didžiulė storulė knyga, kupina įvykių, kurie veja vienas kitą. Laca di Fulvio tikrai sugeba rašyti. Šioje knygoje telpa visas gyvenimas: skausmas, meilė, išdavystė.

Jaunutė italė Četa bėga į savo svajonę - Ameriką. Ne šiaip Ameriką, o patį Niujorką. Merginai nesvarbu viso to kaina.

Nepaprastai jaukus Fulvio pasakojimas.

C’è forza in queste parole.

I am going to write this review in English even though the book I am talking about is not available in English. Yet. I honestly hope, that this will change soon! It would be such a shame if the rest of the world would not be able to enjoy this wonderful piece of literature! The title of the book in its original version is “Il grande scomunicato” by Luca Di Fulvio who is Italian. For all Germans among you, the title is “Der Junge der Träume schenkte” (in English: The boy who gives dreams).

This book, once again, has been a recommendation by a friend of mine. As I am driving to and from work 45 minutes one way every day, I decided to get the audio book instead of reading a hard copy. It is just the perfect way to kill time during a long drive! My way to work turned out to be extremely short. When I arrived, I was so into the story that I felt like being part of it. A really strange feeling…

The story takes place in New York in the beginning of the 20th century and it is about a boy who grows up in the slums of New York at that time. It is amazing to see him grow up over a period of time of around 30 years. The reader is taking part in his adventures and gets to know all the people he meets in an intensive and extremely detailed way.

Early during the story, he meets a girl through some cruel co incidents and falls in love with her the moment he saw her for the first time. Luca Di Fulvio explains both of these main characters and their feelings and switches back and forth between the two of them. He throws in many loose ends that all tie up in the full story at the very end. All parts of the story play an important role and influence each other.

Luca’s style of writing is amazingly beautiful. He pays so much attention to detail and every word seems to be selected with a lot of thoughts! While I was listening to the story, my thoughts never went away from what was happening! I absorbed EVERY SINGLE WORD with so much pleasure that I never wanted the story to end but at the same time I was longing for the end because I desperately wanted to know if Christmas and Ruth (the two main characters) will finally find each other and be happy together. I am not going to tell you how the story ends because I do not want to kill the tension for you!

Just telling you that once in a while, the story gets really emotional as well as cruel and exciting! It is a great mixture of love story, crime and historical fiction! Totally worth reading, not only for women! I can’t wait to read another story of this highly talented author!!! Please go on writing! The boy that you are describing really is a boy who gives dreams and who makes you dream while reading!

Mi-a plăcut foarte mult.
A creat niste personaje minunate.
Recomand povestea. Are multe pagini cartea, dar nu simți când trece timpul, vă garantez.
Direct in raftul de favorite ajunge. ♡♡♡
Love it!

Tad veikėjai įtikino, istorija patiko, o po jos jaučiuosi tarsi pabuvojus XX a. pradžios Niujorke.

Ehh, kokia gera knyga!

Man labai patiko.

Rekomenduoju!

Thank you NetGalley and Bastei Entertainment for providing me with an ARC of THE BOY WHO GRANTED DREAMS by Luca Di Fulvio.

If you thought Jack & Rose from the movie TITANIC was the ultimate love story, wait until you meet Christmas (yes, that's his name) and Ruth! OMG! I am a real sucker for a good immigrant story, especially set in early 20th century New York City, and Luca Di Fulvio has written a giant epic. The Boy Who Granted Dreams is not a quick, easy read. The book is over 800 pages but it's hardly a chore. The characters come alive, the sounds, smells & streets of New York are bursting through the pages. I had some problems with the pacing and dialogue, however, the story was translated from Italian so that could be part of the reason.
If you enjoy historical fiction, old time Hollywood, gangsters and a love story this book will take your breath away.

(Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography [cclapcenter.com]. I am the original author of this essay, as well as the owner of CCLaP; it is not being reprinted illegally.)

So what's the biggest drawback to our current revolution in indie presses and self-publishing, when things like digital printing plants and places like Amazon now allow pretty much anyone on the planet to publish a manuscript as a finished, polished paperback whenever they want? Surprisingly, it's not the proliferation of terrible novels; as I've been learning more and more this fall, as I burn my way through this unending pile of basement-press books that were sent to me earlier this year while I was in computer coding bootcamp, the biggest drawback is actually the proliferation of "just okay" novels, ones that are not terrible enough that you can out-and-out dismiss them but certainly not good enough to bring even one new wrinkle or insight to their readers that they haven't already seen in a million novels previously. And here's the latest to add to the bonfire, an utterly by-the-books historical tale about young Italian immigrants in early-20th-century New York City, which its promotional material says is "perfect for fans of Gangs of New York" but should actually say, "If you've already seen Gangs of New York, there's not a single solitary reason to read this book as well." Perhaps it's because I'm exposed to so many more books like these than the typical pleasure reader out there, but it seems to me like in just the last year or two, the literary industry has started developing a troubling new problem that it's never had before; namely, this explosion in cheap consumer technology is producing a virtual flood of mediocre books that is literally drowning out the increasingly smaller proportion of titles out there that are actually worth your time. And I don't know as a full-time critic how to handle this, because like I said, I can't just dismiss such books and say that they're too terrible to bother reading, because they're not; they're just exactly good enough to justify their existence, kind of like how a piece of iceberg lettuce just barely technically counts enough as "food" to justify being grown. I'll keep making my way through them; but I have to admit, for the first time since CCLaP opened eight years ago, I'm starting to rethink our policy of reviewing any and every book that someone takes the time to send us. A decade ago, it was still difficult enough to publish a paperback that typically a person would only go to the trouble for a title that's truly worth reading (or conversely, is so terrible that the experience becomes weirdly pleasurable in its own right); but in the age we live in now, where anyone can take a Microsoft Word document and deliver a slick bound book to my mailbox literally a week later, the level of barely worthwhile books we're receiving is starting to reach an intolerable level, a development that benefits neither you nor I.

The book starts well. That's it, that's my only "pro" for this one. Oh no, I got one more: A lot of people seem to like it (at least here on Goodreads), which is also good. Especially for Luca Di Fulvio since I assume that he put a lot of effort into it. Unfortunately, I do not belong to that group of people.

The characters of the book find themselves in stereotyped roles and lack depth. The story evolves slow using a very simplified, black and white, cliché view of the world and the people in it. There are plenty of vulgar scenes of physical and sexual violence, which are outright disturbing. The language is simple and the dialogues seem fake. Overall while reading I felt like I was watching some sort of bad Medieval play and I am not a big fan of anything Medieval.

What I also didn't understand was Citta's character, who goes through so much hardship and does not seem to suffer at all. The same goes for Christmas. Above that, Citta falls in love with her pimp who treats her horribly and does not evoke an ounce of sympathy in the reader. Why?! I cannot say a lot about the whole Christmas/Estha plot, because I stopped reading on page 150, but it seemed to go into another very cliché (poor boy saves rich princess, they become a forever-to-be-happy couple) direction, so I am happy that I am spared from this.

The book cover mentioned some poverty, violence and despair but it did not prepare me for the book's content. This book was for me long-breathed and violent to the core. It lived of one cliche after another. I did not make it past page 150. At this point, two young girls have been already raped violently and in quite detailed description, on of those girls going on to be a prostitute that develops feelings for her pimp. Seriously? Really? So the man that sends her to sell her body has a soft and caring heart. Please.
I am usually not faint-hearted and can read or watch stuff that isn't all about fairies and sunshine, but this book just made me dread to turn to another page. It was depressing.

It is everything a good page - turner must be: gripping, well written, fast paced, with believable, relatable, richly painted, characters. I wonder how it is possible it hasn't become a movie or a TV series yet, since it provides perfect material: New York and Los Angeles in the 1920s, gangsters and street life, violence and romance, the American Dream and the birth of radio and cinema, sex and blood, gritty and sentimental scenes.
It was a surprising wave of emotions and a thrilling reading. A book I couldn't literally put down and that got me hooked for a couple of days. Yes, just a couple of days for about 600 pages!
