Book 5 in the Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman series
When her apartment building is blown to smithereens, bumbling hitwoman Maggie Lee is forced to move back into the Bed & Breakfast she grew up in.
Living with her three meddling aunts is bad enough, but it just so happens that the B&B is also occupied by a U.S. Marshal, an FBI agent, her old friend Zeke who’s on a mysterious mission, and a woman who claims she can see dead people. These aren’t the kinds of roomies Maggie wants to spend time with, considering that in order to pay for her niece’s medical care she supplements her income by killing people.
Maggie avoids arrest and deals with a crazier-than-usual home life while trying to track down exactly who is blowing up the holdings of various crime families. To make matters worse, she’s walking a precarious tightrope between keeping her mobster bosses happy and protecting her murder mentor (and almost lover) Patrick Mulligan.
Aided by the warped predictions of her semi-psychic friend, her sarcastic, demanding, talking lizard and an always ravenous, dyslexic Doberman, Maggie juggles keeping secrets, unraveling riddles and protecting those she loves. Can she do it all? Or will she suffer yet another unspeakable loss?
I think I laughed for the entire first four chapters. Which is a good thing since it turns pretty serious the last few chapters. Another terrific job. Everyone should read this series. Read my full review at Girl Who Reads
Another character heavy episode in Maggie Lee's hectic life.
Maggie is threatened into finding the bomber who is blowing up her neighborhood. With her friends help solving old an nee crimes creates the multi-plots in this novel.
Being able to converse with her animals makes for some interesting scenes and the help of her latest edition, a battered cat, Maggie gets herself out of some pretty dangerous situations.
If you like madcap, off the wall cozies this fits the bill.
Maggie Lee has a knack for getting herself into trouble. This time around, things are getting personal... again. The continuing saga of this Hitwoman and her bossy lizard, moody cat, dimwitted dog, and redheaded crush keeps me coming back for more. There were a lot of important story elements in this book that add to the past storyline and build on the future one. I like how each book ties things together but continues to offer new elements of danger and mystery. Poor Maggie gets in deeper at every turn, even when she's just trying to stay out of trouble! This one felt like it ended abruptly but it was probably because I was just enjoying it so much that I didn't realize I'd already neared the ending. Then again, in Maggie's world, an ending is only a beginning. Next book is already in my Kindle! I can't wait to see what Maggie does with her new circumstances.
Ms. Lynn nails it again. Mickey Spillane said "The first chapter sells the book. The last chapter sells the next book." Well, that's exactly what the Hitwoman novels do. The first chapter sucks me in, and with each last chapter, I'm left wanting to read the next book.
This time it starts with Maggie already up to her ass in alligators and the water just keeps rising from there. The whole book kept me on the edge of the cliff. Then I totally didn't see that twist coming. I can't wait to see where she goes from here.
Wow. Good job, JB.
If you haven't read these books yet, you better get cracking. I don't know when the 6th book is due out, but you don't have forever to get caught up.
These books make me laugh. She's been roped into being a hitwoman, has a loony family, friends with a mobster, and can talk to her pet lizard (Godzilla), dog (DD) and cat (Piss). Not exactly highly intellectual reading but a quick, fun read. Read the series!
Thank you for not disappointing, Ms. Lynn. I'm satisfied in that on-the-edge-of-your-seat-biting-your-nails-waiting-impatiently-for-the-next-installment kind of way.
When Maggie was recently in a car accident, her sister and brother-in-law were killed and Katie, her three-year-old niece and goddaughter, was left in a coma. Maggie works in the call centre of an insurance company and doesn't have the kind of money it takes to keep Katie in the high end hospital she needs to be in. To supplement her income, she has become a reluctant hit woman for a mob boss.
When Maggie's apartment explodes, she ends up moving back into the bed and breakfast where she grew up, which is currently full with her three aunts, two law-enforcement officers, her sister and Gypsy, a guest who insists she can see dead people. Businesses owned by her mob boss are getting bombed and he suspects police officer Patrick, Maggie's mentor and crush, may be involved so he wants her to kill him. Maggie can't believe Patrick is involved so sets out to find out who is.
This is the fifth in the Confessions of a Slightly Neurotic Hitwoman series (#52 is coming out next month) and I thought it was okay, not as good as the first four. I wouldn't recommend it as a stand alone and you should read the first four first as there are many references in this one that will make more sense if you have the background. I read the first four in February and March (so it's been a while) and it took a while to remember the back stories because they aren't really provided. For example, it's mentioned that Maggie's friend, Armani, is disabled but it's not until further along that we find out how it happened. Or you don't really have Maggie's sister, Marlene's history.
It's written in first person perspective in Maggie's voice and was humourous at times. I had my doubts about this series when I discovered Maggie can now carry on conversations with Godzilla aka God, Katie's tiny lizard, who Maggie takes care of until Katie recovers, DeeDee, a dog she took in when she killed her owner, and Miss Piss, the cat. It sounds dumb but they are amusing and good friends and confidents to Maggie. I'll carry on and keep reading the series.
Sigh. This series is starting to get boring. Maggie hasn’t killed anyone since the first book and even then she couldn’t do it till her targets were trying to kill her. Zeke’s con man story sounds like such bullshit. What kind of con man tries to bring down a sex trafficking ring by using a psychic? Besides that why was the buzz cut guy trying to take down both crime families? The new secret agency is even more annoying. There is no reasonable explanation for how they would know about all the stuff Maggie’s done or for how they got Maggie to the car repair shop. Did they plan for a crazy dude to freak her out and hope that she somehow gave herself a flat... if so that’s a ridiculous plan. The characters in this series have always been eccentric but the complete lack of logic in this book is disappointing.
Poor Mags, it's always something and if she'd just accept help that's offered, she'd be a little less stressed - just a little less. At least she finally got a bit of action that was pleasing to her. *wink* This was another good read. Can't wait to start Book 6! So I guess Maggie May will be hunting a ghost in the next Book (based on the title). Hopefully she saves the day before she herself becomes a ghost!
Maggie's apt blows up & she's forced back to the B&B with her aunts, US Marshall, FBI agent Zeke, & a woman who sees dead people. She is going to track down the bomber, satisfy her mob boss, keep her lover safe thereby paying for her niece's medical bills. But can she diffuse the bomb? There's the lizard, dog & her psychic friend Armani. Easy funny read
There was so much going on before adding more stuff. I mean let’s get into the roll of things with her being a somewhat decent hitwoman and dealing with her family. This whole thing is getting complicated with how many people she has to answer too. I was hoping we could see what happens next with her family, the pets and Patrick.
I received the first book free but having read and enjoyed it I bought the second then third fourth and fifth . That being the case I can recommend JB Lynn books as seriously enjoyable and a pleasure to read.
I’ve now read 5 books in this series. I’m enjoying this series so much I’ve bought more books in the series. What would you do for family? Could you murder someone? I hope to never have to make that decision.
Maggie the Magnet should be her mob nick name. Why? Because she attracts trouble like magnets attract metal! Two jobs was too mundane for Maggie. She needed another one to occupy all het free time. I am still tan Zeke.
The Hitwoman and the Neurotic Witness, A Review. LAS
This is a great story. JB Lynn is one of my very favourite authors. She tells a brilliant story, and she always remembers to include the animals. They're not just literary devices. Brilliant.
This series is all about the wacky characters - the Aunts, the friends, the animals and the villains. Keeps me laughing. It will be interesting to see what the new secret group will bring into the next book :)
I have a love/hate relationship with the Hitwoman seroes. I love the situations Maggie finds herself in, the animals, the humor and the craziness, but I hate that each one ends and I have to wait for the next adventure. I know JB Lynn wouldn't want me to recommend this but it's almost better if you wait until ALL of them come out and read them all at once. The problem is, I don't know how many are planned so you could be waiting years and that just isn't a good idea.
In The Hitwoman and the Neurotic Witness, Maggie, the heroine of the story and the hitwoman is told by her mob boss to investigate to find out who bombed her apartment building. She doesn't really want to do this because she has enough craziness in her life and she would really like a break from crazy, but you don't say no to a mob boss. Patrick, her murder mentor who is also a police detective warns her to stay out of this and not to investigate. Now what? Who does she listen to?
I found The Hitwoman and the Neurotic Witness to be just as fun as the other books in the series. Just when I wonder what Maggie could get into, there is another adventure that leaves me asking myself how JB can come up with this stuff? The Hitwoman and the Neurotic Witness is so engaging from the beginning and before you know it, the story is over and you are wishing for more! I love the snarky comments form God and Piss and the excitement and save-the-day herocis of DeeDee. If you have followed my blog long you know I love this series. You can see other review of previous books here as well as read an interview with Patrick. I just love the Hitwoman series and highly recommend it to anyone, regardless of your reading preferences. This series is truly one of a kind and you will be glad you tried it.
OMG it's another hilarious and precarious Maggie adventure! If you have not read this series yet i stress to you that you need to. It's slightly paranormal, slightly suspense and all kinds of funny too. Maggie is made to be a hit woman for hire in book one in order to pay for her niece's hospital care. Finally her niece is starting to get better but Maggie is hip deep in her hitwoman life now. Her murder mentor who is way complicated and Maggie's love interest is back and looking our for Maggie in his own way as usual. This is a fast paced book that ends way to soon as usual. It sucks you right in and for however long it takes you to read it you are entertained. There is a talking dog, cat and lizard as well as fortune telling friend and 3 crazy aunts a hot love interest and of course the mob. You'll laugh i guarentee it!
The Hitwoman and the Neurotic Witness is another hit for author J.B. Lynn. Maggie Lee and her menagerie of talking animals are back to take on the bad guys and the "witches" (aka her aunts) in a hilarious free-for-all with ninjas, mob bosses, and stolen kisses from her murder mentor, cop Patrick Mulligan. Finally! I've been waiting for the simmering sexual tension between those two to finally move to the next step. There's also a shadowy new player in the mix who gives Maggie another deal she can't refuse. And FYI? I wasn't kidding about the ninjas. Read it. You know you want to.
Maggie barely makes it out of her apartment alive when the complex explodes. Forced to stay at the B&B again with her wacky family she's drawn into another mystery of who bombed her home. The mob boss wants the bomber killed and her to do it, the US Marshal & his FBI agent brother are staying at the B&B investigating, & Zeke shows up with a woman who claims to see ghosts. Maggie is being drawn in all different directions from the stress of family, helping Katie recover, and drawing closer to Patrick. Life and death are held in balance as she navigates everything being thrown at her with a little help from God, Piss, & DeeDee. A hilarious book. Looking forward to the next in series.
