Robert Bennett was born in Louisiana and spent his childhood there and in Texas.
His diverse work history has taken him across the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean as well as England, and his books are shaped by the people he has known and the places he has visited.
"If I write about a place, it's because I've visited there and either the place or the people left an impression", Bennett said when asked about the inspirations for his books.
He currently resides in Texas with his wife Karren, his Jack Russell Terrier "'Sup", and occasionally his kids as they return from college on breaks. He also spends a lot of time answering questions for his daughter, who lives in Austin.
I first read this book about a year ago. Now it has a permanent place in my bookcase. I take it down, open it at random, and just enjoy reading the narrative and dialogue. It is the type of writing that you want to read. This is the second book with the main character, Noah Chance. The first book was "No' Chance." Noah was born with Down's syndrome and has reached adulthood successfully, with the help of his two best friends, Spencer and Jennifer. Problems in Noah's life, and in Spencer's and Jennifer's lives, are caused by Noah's ability to see and talk to the dead. In this story, the three adventurers travel to Galveston Island, Texas, to help a Group Home that is having haunting problems. They learn that the real problem is far more serious, with real danger for far more people. The locales are described with stunning accuracy, and the island/coastal atmosphere is brought to life in a warm, inviting, and evocative way. The story in the first book was told by Spencer. This one is told by Jennifer. But the story, as always, is about Noah. And Noah is the most wonderful character you will ever meet.
