Shooting Blanks: A Husband's Perspective on Missing the Mark and Dealing with Infertility

Rate this book
Jonathan and Steve may not be the world's foremost authority on fertility treatments and definitely do not offer any groundbreaking psychological methods for coping but you don't need a degree to know what's funny! After a combined 15 years of infertility, the authors have finally decided to go where no man has gone before and, wait for it... share their feelings! Let's face it, when it comes to failing to give your wife the one thing she has wanted for her entire life, it's not easy to talk to her or anyone about the roller coaster of emotions the infertile male encounters.

It may not be possible to quantify the effect laughter has on any medical condition but anyone who has been through any type of medical struggle knows just how true the saying is: "Laughter is the best medicine." It's not always easy to laugh at your own struggles but you will identify with the stories in Shooting Blanks and we'll allow you to laugh at us instead! This book is for husbands to realize they aren't alone, for wives to know what what's going on in our heads and for couples to laugh together.

This book in one word: Refreshing!

Having gone through eight years of infertility I thought that I had heard it all...and I had...until I read Shooting Blanks: A husband's perspective on missing the mark and dealing with infertility.

What a refreshing approach this book took! After every procedure known to man (and woman...multiple times!) and an empty bank account to prove it, humor is not something that my husband and I have been feeling in great doses lately. As a couple trying to extend our family beyond two, our journey has taken us on the most emotional of roller coaster rides with twists and turns we never imagined. What remains is a painful experience in the quietest corners of our relationship.

What I loved about this book, more than any other (and I think I've read them all) is the author's ability to turn the most serious and embarrassing infertility issues into some of the funniest. By page 3, I had to get my husband so we could laugh at Dr. Jelly-finger together. We finished this short read together and I'm so glad that we did.

Oh the laughter!

This book took our pain and gave us something to laugh at again - ourselves and our experience. Kudos to the men who wrote it for their refreshing perspective. Every woman who has been touched by infertility should read it. Every man who has been touched by infertility should read it. Preferably, together.

Trust me, you will laugh.

From the awkwardness of the tests you have to go through to the awkwardness of really stupid things people say, infertility is just plain awkward. It can also be heart wrenchingly painful.

But, you can cry about it or you can laugh about it. The approach of this book is to laugh about it.

There aren't a lot of resources out there from a man's perspective. It's refreshing to read some of the experiences and know you're not alone. For people who haven't experienced it, you may not relate. But for those who have been there, this book will be hilarious.
