Barrett is addicted to vengeance. The whole process of revenge is his life, from taking a horrific beating, to the long rocky road of recovery, to exacting his cruel and brutal retribution. Anyone who crosses him will suffer the ultimate fate; he won’t be denied.
With each act of vengeance, however, comes the thirst for more. For more pain! More humiliation! More bliss as he destroys all that wronged him! Like all addicts, he’s chasing that elusive high, and who knows what hellish place that craving will lead to.
Addicted to Vengeance is a brutal, unforgiving extreme horror that doesn’t pull any punches. Vengeance isn’t for the weak. In Barrett’s world, vengeance and violence are all that matters. It’s his happy place, no matter the cost.
Barrett is one of those guys, who always seems seems to be in “the wrong place, at the wrong time”. Whether, it’s being beaten by the school bully, attacked by a vicious gang while cycling home from work, or jumped and left for dead in a coma. But Barrett has a very high pain tolerance, and gets off on being beaten, fuelling his ‘addiction for vengeance’, and dishing out his own kind of retribution.
This is the second book which I’ve read from Stephen Cooper, and he doesn’t hold back on the violence, gore, blood and extreme brutality, from the first to last page.
This book comes with a lot of TW, which includes rape and suicide, and is a ‘must read’ for fans of extreme horror/Splatterpunk.
Thanks to Stephen for sending me this free ARC, which I highly recommend, and which I gladly give a voluntary review.
This is the fourth book I've read from Stephen Cooper and I have to say it's far the BLOODY BEST!! Wow...Just Fucking...Wow! It was one insane story with brutality pouring out from every page,I couldn't put it down. The plot was truly amazing...it drew me in by my heart and my head...I didn't know if I hated Barrett or felt extreme sorrow for him...I had mixed feelings throughout the book, especially after the wife/daughter rape/murder scenes...I couldn't get that out of my mind for a long time...the vengeance in Barrett was so strong it took over him...the book lived up to it's title! The ending just blew me away...it was so good...😈👹👺👿
“We are each our own devil...and we make this world our hell.”
Stephen Cooper you are amazing...Thank You for your awesome books.
I have known of Stephen Cooper for a while following his YouTube channel and on social media but hadn't read any of his books until now. Addicted to Vengeance is a hell of a ride.
Barrett is a man who had suffered. He had endured numerous violent attacks during his life through no fault of his own or by just trying to do the right thing. Barrett however is different from most men. He can take pain most would not survive. He actually relishes the effect these beatings have had on him because there is something special about Barrett. The beatings give him a chance to do what he truly loves, his lifes calling and that is to seek Vengeance in the most brutal ways.
As the title suggests Barrett is addicted to the process of vengence and it consumes him. Vengeance is the most important thing in his life even above his family who he adores.
The story follows Barrett who is compelled to violently correct the wrongs which he has been subjected too. This has some vivid descriptions of grotesque violence, tons of blood, broken bones, torture and inner dialogue of Barretts demented mind. Barrett seeks his vengeance in some absolute inventive ways. I particularly loved the descriptions of the character Jessys death.
Vengeance is put above all else for Barrett as it consumes his existence. The conclusion is not what I expected either when reading the story but absolutely loved how it ended and left a smile on my face in its depravity.
A wicked and extremely violent book fans of revenge stories and splatterpunk fans will enjoy immensely. This is one I will definitely reread again. 4.5 stars down to 4 for goodreads.
I'm not sure I can come up with words to adequately describe how much I enjoyed this book. The main character was a very complex person, I felt sympathy and disgust towards him in equal parts. And the ending, holy cow. Bravo to the author!
Damn what a fuckin ride. Stephen Cooper you have a new fan. This story kicked ass. This was fuckin brutal and had a main character that is both masochistic and sadistic. The concept of this story fuckin rules. the main character loves to "receive" pain just so he can deal out his vengeance and get his fix. This story is raw emotional and totally addictive. The story never lets up had me turning pages and has a truly WHAT THE FUCK ending. Highly recommend this one
This one's great, and it also features a completely unique protagonist. It's filled with violence and gore, but Cooper takes the writing to another level with this one. And I certainly didn't see the ending coming. Highly recommended for fans of extreme fiction!
Barrett has a bit of a kink, well, maybe it’s not a kink per se but he kinda enjoys getting the shit beat out of him and then exacting revenge. But when he meets the perfect woman and has the perfect daughter, all of that goes away. Right? RIGHT?!
*sigh* I cussed Stephen for something in this novella. Look, you will too so let’s not judge me just yet. Cooper’s ability to write emotional devastation mixed with brutal carnage is going to be his signature. I just know it.
His ability to evoke these feelings and reactions shock me every time I read something new from him (at this writing, I have read four by him and see no signs of stopping). He is going to be someone to watch very closely and side eye the entire time. Definitely the rising star of the year in my opinion. A HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/5.
A genuinely disturbing read, not so much for the gore (there is; lots of it!) but rather the unsettling and extreme demands of addiction itself. The story is about Barrett, a man whose pain threshold is high, but whose mind is disturbed: he gets high on taking vengeance for (real) slights against his person -and by "slights" I mean quite violent beatings!- to the point that he ends up orchestrating the situations himself, in order to hunt down the perpetrators afterwards and take his vengeance. But that's only half the story: Cooper does not hesitate to take Barrett's story one step further, and show exactly what "addiction to vengeance" means. Barrett becomes a family man; and then his home gets invaded. You have no idea what is to follow. This is Stephen Cooper's best book yet!
Barrett's addiction to vengeance has been with him all his life. Always lurking, even during the happiest times of his life. He needs it; he seeks it. It's just who he is. Cooper's protagonist is an absolute beast. A kickass tale that, at certain moments, punches you in the throat and then turns around and tugs at your heart, feeling his pain. top-notch read. Check it out on Godless and Amazon.
At first this was a solid 4-5 star extreme-horror-book, intriguing, nice setup, weird idea. But at around 50% I noticed that the narrator was just telling the same few lines over and over and over and over again. About how he felt the last time he delivered vengeance, how he is going to deliver vengeance now, how he's gonna rain vengeance down on those guys, like the other guys before, that vengeance is the sweetest thing, that he has to deliver vengeance in a really brutal way, so when he's going to deliver that vengeance, they will know he had delivered vengeance, and he will feel like the other time he delivered vengeance and it's the best feeling. It's just so repetitive, I started to skip almost entire pages because he just went on and on without actually saying or doing anything that moves the story forward. The book could have been 30 pages shorter, easily.
I don't know if it's on purpose, to really "get into the mind" of this guy, get a glimpse of his addiction and what it does to him, but it just felt too much for me, like the author really tried to stretch a novella into a novel.
Despite that gripe, I still had a good time reading this. I 'enjoyed' most of the story and I can recommend it to any fan of extreme horror and splatterpunk.
Ever since he was a kid, it seems that Barrett has been singled out for abuse, whether it be from the hands of a schoolmate or the casual cruelty of strangers. What makes Barrett different is not just his high tolerance for pain, but the exhilaration he gets from the assaults. During each attack, he retreats to a place where he plans his vengeance, and while his body is healing, he begins the task of tracking down his prey.
The reader can't help but root for Barrett, but when his quest takes an unexpected turn, some of that empathy may be lost. Cooper paints an absolutely bleak, blood-soaked portrait of a man who is chasing the ultimate high that vengeance and retribution will bring, even if it means he has to pay the ultimate price.
As with all extreme horror titles, be mindful that the content contains numerous trigger warnings. Thank you so much to the author for an ARC of this unforgettable book with a character I'll not soon forget. ADDICTED TO VENGEANCE will release July 21, 2023.
I am pretty much speechless after reading this book but I will try my best to describe it. Barrett is a highly unusual character that has an odd agenda, after being beat down by the school bully he finds out that he enjoys it but what is even better is plotting his revenge, giving back what he received, spending years plotting and planning his vengeance. Barrett continues to chase this high throughout the years, when his family is destroyed by a robbery gone wrong he takes it even more personal and won't stop til he gets the ultimate vengeance. But at what price?
I know Stephen from his youtube channel 'Splatploitation' and his passion for extreme horror made me curious to try out one of his own novels. His combination of an ultraviolent, well crafted revenge story with a complex but original main character like Barrett, will give you one hell of an outstanding reading experience. One of the best books I read in 2023.
Barrett is an INCREDIBLY interesting main character. I loved this book. Stephen Cooper is an incredible writer with a real knack for horror. I can't wait to read more of his work. Next up... HACK!
This book has everything from happiness and joy to death and destruction. Was wonderfully written, has an awesome story, and even an epic ending! I enjoyed it a lot!
