Rate this book
How to Create an Engaged, Empowered, Self-Led Team Imagine a workplace where people can be themselves . Where there aren’t hierarchies or power dynamics. Where team members continuously find ways to better themselves and their work because it makes them feel excited and fulfilled. Where everyone supports each other without ego. This type of environment is not only possible; it’s the catalyst for a successful company. Nurse Next Door president and CEO Cathy Thorpe inspires leaders to radically change their people practices and organizational culture by leading with kindness. Her leadership and culture philosophy, Bold Kindness, is based on the principle that employees perform best when they feel respected, valued and empowered. People who have the autonomy to pursue their genuine desires are more likely to feel engaged and passionate about their work, helping to create lean businesses with less overhead and greater financial growth. Cathy’s innovative leadership approach has disrupted the home care industry and made Nurse Next Door one of the world's fastest-growing home care companies and a globally admired brand. Her learnings will challenge you to reflect on your own leadership and organization, reframe the traditional corporate mindset and accelerate your business by putting people first.

I loved this book! The bright cover drew me in at the airport one day, and I nearly finished it on my flight. Such a nice and refreshing perspective of the importance of emotional intelligence and human connection in the work place.

I won this on Goodreads. It was different than I expected. It is basically a business model from nurses next door, talking about how they structure their business. Although I like and admire the overall concept and ideas, it didn't necessarily seem new.

BOLD KINDNESS by Cathy Thorpe is the best kind of business/philosophy inspiration. It takes tremendous courage and determination to break the silences, make the first move toward an off-putting person whether they are on your team or someone you are attempting to serve. Through stories large and small, Thorpe demonstrates the difference that one small kindness can make in changing individuals with the giving and the receiving and then the ripples that flow from that moment of clear-headed, intelligent compassion. Leading and managing with kindness has transformed the home health care industry through Thorpe's respect for the individuals, the trust and the simple human kindness that blew up the paradigm of top down pressure and overwhelming demands on individuals to do more, do better, do it faster, and do it cheap while receiving high ratings for patient satisfaction. I had never heard of this particular home health care company before. Her book opened my eyes to what a new way of building and leading an organization can be--particularly important now that we need to change our way of getting the right things done right. On a side note, I would have been the change agent who dropped a copy of this book off on some key managers desks....I received a copy of this book and these opinions are my own, unbiased thoughts.

growth mindset

I liked this book. I really did. However, in some business and industry this would not be good. The intentions are there: encouraging growth while nurturing a mentorship than a managing one. Or bringing up that allowing employees to come up with ideas for their own solutions to problems in guide them in the direction to the best one. All in good intention… but there are some schools of thought which might poke holes in this. Not having more organized control over production and expectation could lead to “mistakes” being made which could cost the company in production or even liability. Showing others to be sure to “wash their own dishes” is good, but it’s that simple, will be REALLY care? Being kind and fostering growth and opportunities to leave if they want is amazing, but wouldn’t it be bad business practice if they come in and learn how your program is run only to leave and duplicate everything you’ve worked hard on accomplishing for your company? A lot of these practices and ways of being open to change and being honest, encouraging mistakes and watching our ego-wonderful and bold and mostly kind. I agree with all of this and this book should be read by CEOs, directors, managers and supervisors where the REAL change will be talked about, seen and implemented.

It's my first time reading about NurseNextDoor and I absolutely love their approach to caregiving and the author's decision to share this book which provides tips and insights on how to engage, lead and connect with others-with bonus case studies and experiences of their own organization.
In three parts, they explore kindness at the workplace, to self and then as a culture- and I found this interesting because often we look into what it means to be kind to others in terms of what we get out of it-and very rarely build it as a culture into our workplaces and lives.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.

This is a powerful and inspiring book that encourages readers to embrace a life filled with compassion, empathy, and generosity. With thought-provoking insights and practical advice, Thorpe guides us on a journey towards cultivating kindness as a way of positively impacting the world around us.
One of the standout qualities of "Bold Kindness" is the author's ability to convey the importance of stepping out of our comfort zones and taking actions to make a difference. The author illustrates how acts of kindness, both big and small, can create a ripple effect in our lives and others'.
The strength of this book lies in its ability to inspire and motivate readers. Thorpe's writing style is engaging and relatable, making complex concepts accessible to everyone. I won on goodreads and I found this to be standard advice on being compassionate in the work place. Basically a business model for Nurses next door. Lovely but nothing ground breaking or new
