The Reluctant Alpha

Rate this book
Just coming off a four month hunting trip for his Alpha’s missing pup, all Dylan wants is a nice steak, a cold beer and a soft bed. He’s worn out and had no luck at all on the trip. The pup is still in the wind. When she walks into his favorite bar, his world turns upside down.
Cami is finally in control of her own life, in a nice safe town and happy. At least until Dylan takes up residence in her bar and in her life. One minute werewolves are not real and the next she is not only one of them but she’s a missing werewolf Princess to boot. Suddenly, she’s found herself in a world that she never knew existed. He shows her things about herself and her body that she never dreamt possible. Surely, he has to be crazy, he has to be!
Is this hot, dominating man the answer to all of the questions she had about herself? Or is he just another cocky, overbearing pain in the rear?

Dnfed after 5 pages.
Sentence structure was choppy, main male character seemed like an archetype of a commitment phobic jerk, who, of course, after meeting the right person probably changes into a regular dude and not a walking red flag, and this little snippet—

“You’re the hottest bitch in this bar.”  Dylan said with a broad panty dropping smile.  She would definitely be his later tonight. “Excuse me?  What did you just say to me?  You did not just call me a B!”  She shouted and spun on one heel marching back to the bar where she gestured at Dylan and talked animatedly to Frankie.”

—a grown woman at a bar saying “B” instead of bitch just seems…icky to me? I don’t know, but it rubbed me the wrong way.

Lacked believability & follow through in some areas.

For e.g:
-She finds out she’s a werewolf & doesn’t really have much of an adverse reaction?
Then so many random things:
-She’s a princess but signs that away without even delving into her history
-His close friend died & the next day they act like nothing ever happened. Based on the circumstances of his death this is very hard to believe

This could have been a great read & was definitely steamy but fell short on plot development.

Sometimes when I read novella length books I feel like there might be a misconception that shorter stories are easier to write and require less effort. In no way should this be the case. In fact it could be harder because an author must imbue world building, character depth and development and storyline in a much shorter timeframe. Less margin for error so to speak because we have so much less story to read and get invested in.

Sadly this is where The Reluctant Alpha falls down. We don't really get any of the above world building, character development or storyline. Our first introduction to our hero and his initial interaction with Cami is awkward. He's abrupt, rude and appears incapable of forming a complete sentence. This raises the question...was this the authors intent or is it just bad editing? Could be both because the standard of editing was certainly an issue throughout.

Throw in some random plot devices such as royal bloodlines, best friends gone crazy and unrequited love and we really do have a mess.

It's not like I hated it but it could definitely do with some revision and focus.

It started out interesting but I found I found my eyes rolling at some parts. Cami was too accepting once she was told werewolves existed and that she was one. I'd expect her to freak out more. Then we find out she's some lost wolf princess from Italy. They didn't explain, or I don't remember it being explained, why there was a conspiracy to kill her parents. Then in the end we find out Dylan is royalty too from the Spanish side. Why didn't Junior want to be alpha of his dad's pack? He didn't want to challenge and kill his father? I thought it was automatic for him to just inherit if he didn't want to kill his father to succeed him as alpha. Then there's Dylan's good friend Pete, a fellow beta, who challenged him for the alpha position (who was egged on by his malicious mate from another pack) so Dylan had to kill him (as per pack rules regarding challenges). Mike, another fellow beta, who was Pete's best friend cried when this happened but the next day everything was back to normal.
Dylan was instantly attracted to Cami and new she was his mate as soon as he smelled her and very few possessive moments.

Dylan he's like a damn caveman, "go out with me. Let me feed you." He takes suggestions to heart, "yeah, I bathed and cut my hair too as requested ma'am." He saluted her. "Now will you let me take you out?" He's also one to provide for his woman, "you need money? I'm your man. You need a place to stay. I'll take care of it. You need satisfaction. Anytime, any..where." And Cami the girl sure knows how to tease a man, "come on now. I'm right here and I'll keep you safe." He murmured in her ear. Cami nuzzled his neck, her lips brushed over his pulse point. "Oh darlin' don't do that, I may not be able to stop myself." This was a great fun quick read

The princess and the pauper.....well kinda. Poor orphan Cami never had a family, bounced between foster homes all her life. A jack of all trade with an affinity for cars. Her mate, just a common wolf with an affinity for stock trading kept the packs coffers full. Fast forward... Lots of sniffing, growling, biting and hot sex later, both are royalty. See where all this takes them.
