An old man returned to an abandoned village in Hong Kong where he lived when he was a child. Having moved to the city for many years, he missed every moment that he spent with his childhood friend in the village, especially the wish they made under the Wishing Tree. This story aims at arousing awareness of environmental protection and cultural preservation.
There are lots of pictures in this book and they are very nicely drawn. Through the memories of the old man, we know how he spent his childhood in the village which used to have beautiful surroundings in the past and they no longer existed due to urban development. Although I'm not an old man, I'm moved by the story since in the city I live, the quietness and beauty of the countryside is gradually being taken away. Is this the only way of development?
This book is written for kids and I recommend that parents read it with their kids in order to arouse their love to environments and respect to nature and culture.
