I spent twenty-five years in the wonderful world of road construction. Back surgery in 2010 put the skids on that career. My body couldn’t handle the rigors of twelve to sixteen hour days, six to seven days a week. As I convalesced, licking my wounds, I wondered what to do next. Not being out in the sun getting baked, or dodging traffic, was going to be a hard act to follow. Seriously, what else did I know? An article in the Dallas Morning News caught my eye. It was about being a professional speaker. Hmm. That sounds interesting. Becoming mobile again, I took a seat in front of the blank monitor, pondering what to write. Let’s start with something we know—my life.
The first work was titled “God’s Plan: A Glimpse Into One’s Life.” I re-titled it six months later to “Why Did Everything Happen?” I looked back at the last twenty-five years and how the death of my partner, father and true love affected my life. I was amazed at the revelations. Since then, I’ve moved on to write in several different genres. Some say I should change my name when diverting from the path. Well, right or wrong, I’m sticking with my name. The current works range from the memoir of my one true love: Debbie Beck—RIP 7-20-2009—Love’s True Second Chance, an alternative historical perspective of Vampires and WWII—Occupation, a newly released Sci-Fi time travel adventure,—Gateway: Pioche. If that isn’t enough, how about two Baseball Coaching Manuals?

I currently live in the DFW area, spending time with my daughter, her girls and my oldest son. When I was in construction, I never had, or took the time to enjoy what surrounded me: love, family and friends. My true love, Debbie and her girls reminded me what was important in life; “we work to live, not live to work.”

I will say this much, I wasn't planning on a sequel to the original Gateway: Pioche. When Gateway was finished, I believed this story could go no where else, but reviewers and the co-author Larry Welch informed me the story must continue. Apparently the ending in book one was an unintentional cliffhanger. So, I spent two or three months pondering the idea. How does one trump time travel? That was the dilemma.Well, once I realized the technology developed by Leonoid Skorzenzy could be turned into a weapon which makes nuclear weapons obsolete, the story wrote itself and I do mean that. It took off. This is one fast paced thriller!

Some of the highlights: What does Genereal McCulloch do with the list Judith gave him? Did Larry's second trip back in time affect his brain waves? Will Nathan Francisco retrieve what was stolen in Vegas or will his journey take an unseen turn? Was Leonoid part of a bigger plot to overthrow the US government? Those question and many more will be answered.

I chose to read this book after receiving a free e-copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I read the first book in the Gateway Series, Gateway: Pioche, and really liked it so I was looking forward to reading the second book.

Muki, Abdul, Larry and Judith were students at Stanford who are geniuses (geeks) and decided to go on vacation before starting work. They went Vegas and won a lot of money after learning to count cards from Larry. The mob is after them because they want that money back.

The characters are different and fairly well developed. Judith was not likeable at all in the first book, but she is getting better the more she’s with the other three. Abdul continues to put things in a Star Trek scenario but not nearly as much as in Gateway: Pioche, maybe because their situation is much more serious right now. Larry seemed to be the “normal” one but now that he’s time traveled twice, he has some mental issues including anger.

Destination DC kept my interest throughout. There was a lot of action and the graduates had mobsters following them as well others trying to kill them because they knew too much. It’s an edge of your seat page turner. I don’t recommend reading this book without reading the first book first.

The only issue I had was that it was hard to keep up with the conversations sometimes, who was talking to whom.

I am going to read the next book in the series, Destination DC, soon because I have to know what happens next!

I enjoyed the first book greatly and the second book even more so. I thought this was a well-thought out and logical sequel. The author has a great way of writing, and uses some great imagery while interjecting wit and humor into the story. While the plot is complex, with many pieces and characters scattered, the author has put it together so it is easy to follow the twists, turns and major players in this sci-fi story.

My one issue is that it starts off right where book one left off. It had been awhile since I had read the first book so it took me a minute to recall the exact circumstances. An introduction or a recap of the latter part of the first book would have been a nice way to start rather than dumping the reader into territory that felt unfamiliar at first. However, once I read a few paragraphs, the pieces all clicked into place.

If you are a fan of science fiction, consider reading this series. The author clearly is a fan of the genre and has weaved a masterful story around a solid plot. I look forward to reading the third book in the series. I received a fee copy in exchange for an honest review.

The characters have begun to grow on me. There was a ton of action and plot twists that came together at the end. The scientific stuff sounded real (not that I would know) and the author has a good sense of history and politics. Once again it was left open for a sequel, which I will probably read.

While I am not typically drawn to WWII narratives, Destination D.C. captured my attention with a sci-fi twist, forcing me to hold on tight as the protagonists’ 2016 Camaro rushed from one perilous location to the next. The body count and high stakes mount as they desperately try to alert scientists and political leaders about the resurgence of the Nazi regime. This time, the threat is not just regional but global, and the new weapon at its core is capable of enslaving the entire world.

Destination D.C.’s dialogue crackles with authenticity, and the characters' hard edges and palpable urgency mirror the faces we see on the news each night in war zones worldwide.
