Grade:1st grade
Lexile Measurement:Early Childhood
Genre:Picture Book/Poetry

Characters: A boy and a Girl
Setting: Point of view from
POV: The point of view is from the narrator’s perspective.

This book is a rhyming book about a boy and a girl that play dress-up. While playing dress up they create different costumes and focus on their body parts and what materials they can utilize. For example, their head is used for a hat. Both of them pick a hat to wear and enjoy their game by exploring different dress up costumes. The illustrations are very colorful and the text is all in rhyming.

I would use this book in a kindergarten or first grade class to introduce some rhyming words and poetry. Also I would use it to describe boys and girls differences. I will compare and contrast boy s and girls in our class and talk about our different features and the different things they use. (Gender and sex differences) I will stay neutral about the topic not focusing much on what a boy should have or not have or what a girl should have or not have. I will focus more on our similarities such as having eyes, mouth, nose, etc.

A Head is for Hats is a poetry book that describes how a boy and a girl are playing dress up. As they are playing dress up and changing costumes, the different parts of the body are introduced to the reader, such as, a head is for hats, mouth for singing and eating, and hands for painting and waiving. As the children change costumes, a new body part is introduced. All the different body parts make the boy and girl different from one another; it makes them who they are. Since the book is a poetry book it can create a fun way to learn about the body and its senses.

I would use this book in first grade to discuss the different parts of the body and their functions as well as the introduction to poetry. Since it is a poetry book, students may have an easy time following along and reading it with me during a read aloud. Creating a rhyming activity would be fun, too. The themes in the book are the human body and early learning.

A head Is for Hats is an informational book that can be used when teaching a lesson to young children about our senses and body parts. The book explains that hats go on your head and they stay on your head because you have ears to keep them there. The books talks about smells, sights and noises. Its very educational for young children.
