Author's Note: Lukan is also included as part of Interludes in Hell along with two longer prequel novellas in the Sovereign Spirit Saga. I encourage readers to get the full prequel collection, unless you get Lukan during a free promotion.
What would you do if you knew you were going to die soon? Lukan is a novelette about exactly that. This 20+ page story sets the stage for the "Sovereign Spirit Saga" by explaining how and why the apocalypse was unleashed upon the world. This first person story will take you around the world and back again, leaving you breathless and afraid of everyone you meet. Invisible death is stalking the world and Lukan is its name.
David P. Forsyth holds a masters degree in international relations and has pursued diverse interests and career paths. He is a licensed pilot and certified scuba diver. An avid reader of sci-fi, action-adventure, techno-thriller, horror, fantasy and apocalyptic fiction, Mr. Forsyth's professional endeavors have ranged from higher education to international trade, from travel marketing to charter aviation, and from failed entrepreneur to construction superintendent. David lives in Malibu, California, with the love of his life, Pamela, and nine munchkin cats. His goals are to become a successful enough author to quit his day job, focus on writing, and explore the world. He also buys the occasional lottery ticket.
I was given the chance to read a pre release copy of David Forsyth’s latest addition to the Sovereign Saga, Lukan, which is a short story about how the zombie apocalypse started in his series.
The premise of the story is a great one, a man who has nothing left to lose and a tumor pressing on his brain, has found people that see the world through jaded eyes, just as he does, nothing but an over populated mess, only they have a plan to manage it, and through Lucan, a means to pull it off.
Forsyth draws us into this world of mental decay, explaining any gaps that could not be revealed in his series until now. Lukan is a page turner as you hope for a moment of clarity in the character’s mind, only to end, just as we knew it would, with the birth of the onslaught of zombies.
All fans of his series should be picking up a copy of this, now.
Having read the Sovereign Spirit Saga I looked forward to reading the prequel for it, LUKAN. I was not disappointed, in fact, this answered all my questions as to how the zompoc started and then some. Not only did I despise Lukan, but I also pitied him too. His own history was what I felt bad about. His thoughts and reasoning of why and how and where, let's just say:
WHY? he was idealistic for the wrong reason.
HOW? Two weeks traveling and using a unique means of spreading the virus..
WHERE? All over.
I understood his ideas and why, although I didn't agree with them. How he did it, wow, amazing how easy it was to spread. And where, to be able to go to all the places he did in that two week span, travel is so easy now.
David Forsyth gave the perfect explanation of the start of the end of life as we know it. Now we know what to look for.
There are quite a few very disturbing things about the main character who narrates this short tale. He calmly explains step-by-step the progression he goes through from being a hum-drum insurance salesman to his role as the bringer of the apocalypse. On almost every page, I thought to myself "This is not how the end of the world happens," and at the same instant found myself thinking, "Yeah, it is . . . this is exactly how the end of the world happens." The plot is not complicated. There isn't much action. The characters are not particularly interesting -- but the story is really creepy and weird and scary because it takes you inside the mind of LUKAN - the bringer of the apocalypse. It simply rings true: This is how the world as we know it is going to end.
This is a good addition to the Sovereign Spirit Saga series, it maybe a short book but it gives a good insight as to how the virus managed to spread globally so quickly and who was responsible for the outbreak.
I had mixed feelings regarding the virus carrier at first wondering how he could condemn so many people to such an horrific fate, but this is a man with nothing to live for as he's dying from a terminal illness, even though he does have second thoughts at one point during his travels.
The book finishes just before the outbreak starts and as I mentioned sets the scene nicely for the first saga book.
WELL WORTH A READ, IT HELPS YOU TO UNDERSTAND HOW IT ALL STARTED. THE SOVEREIGN SPIRIT SAGA IS ONE OF THE BEST ZOMBIE TRILOGYS OUT THERE. WORTH READING BACK TO BACK
NOTE: Lukan is also included as part of Interludes in Hell with two longer prequel novellas in the Sovereign Spirit Saga. I encourage readers to get the full prequel collection, unless you get Lukan during a free promotion.
This prequel is intended to fill in some of the background on the cause of the zombie apocalypse in the Sovereign Spirit Saga for fans of the series and also introduce new readers to my vision of the apocalypse. The only real spoiler is that there will be a zombie apocalypse.
Lukan is a stand alone novelette and does not require reading the whole saga to understand, but I have included a short teaser from Voyage of the Dead at the end for new readers. Those who decide to come aboard for the full journey are advised to get the trilogy edition of "Sovereign Spirit Saga: Volume One" for the best pricing (even if you download Voyage of the Dead for free).
This prequel is a horrifically fascinating start to David Forsyth's, 'Sovereign Spirit Saga'. A short story to introduce the reader to the hellish events to come. I've already purchased the "Saga" and plan to read it next. This book has infected me and now I feel that I must continue! ;)
Very well written with a simply terrifying rationalizations of a dying man. A deliciously creepy beginning to what I think will be an awesomely fatal series!
it made me angry!! how someone could do what they did!! ugh!!! guess that's a good thing when you read books to be passionate, angry, sad and have so many emotions. 're-read the next book again too so it made more sense to me and I was able to picture every thing. can't wait to get the next in line.
Wasn't as good as I expected. I actually thought there was going to be something having to do with after the 'apocalypse'. Good book that will get your attention, but will rip your heart out on how abruptly it ends.
