Occupation

Rate this book
"One thing about living in New Orleans I never could stomach...all the damn zombies." That seems to be the popular sentiment as the wild decadence and splendor of the Crescent City is underlined with the very real threat of a zombie apocalypse. In OCCUPATION, two best friends struggle to survive in a post-Katrina New Orleans in which several of the city’s residents have turned into mindless, ravenous zombies. Largely ignored by many in the city/state legislature, the city’s residents are forced to defend themselves against a mysterious epidemic that has many baffled as to the true nature of its origin.

Now on the heels of a city swept in the madness and hysteria of both Mardi Gras and the Super Bowl, two friends race against time in a last ditch effort to discover the truth behind the cause of the virus before it is too late. OCCUPATION is a funny, insightful and haunting story bringing a new twist on zombie folklore.

"Just keep writing." Out of those simple words grew a dream that would instill a profound sense of purpose within a young kid born and raised in New Orleans, LA. With only his dreams along with an insatiable drive to be the best he could be, this writer would grow from penning children's literature in the 3rd grade to later writing stageplays and screenplays in college. Heavily influenced by a who's who of incredible writers from Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and Ralph Ellison all the way to August Wilson, Arthur Miller and Aaron Sorkin, lazarusInfinity has continued to stretch his creative boundaries to encompass all forms of writing. In addition to writing contemporary fiction and children's stories, he is currently at work on several screenplays along with another novel.

Shows promise but the book was a bit jumbled.

A zombie story set in 2013, I really liked how the author thought outside the box. Most zombie stories are heavy on gore and short on originality but “Occupation” paints the classic zombie tale into one of class struggle and government conspiracies. And reading it in 2020 the book seems almost prophetic (the city of New Orleans hosting the Super Bowl in the middle of a zombie outbreak does not at all seem far-fetched having experienced the Covid-19 pandemic). Also, I liked the world building, as the city of New Orleans itself emerged as a central character in this short book. Where the author comes up short however is in the pacing and story telling. At times the story feels rushed and convoluted. One second the Super Bowl is about to kick off when suddenly the stadium is engulfed in darkness before the zombies overrun the whole city, a development that takes place in basically two sentences. Also, although the pop culture references were pretty clever, with quasi-quotes from Pulp Fiction and Lost Boys among others, there was some holes in the dialogue. At times the conversations and interactions between the central characters felt artificial and forced. It just didn’t feel like real conversations between real people, which is a shame since the two main characters do grow on you.

Ugh. Thankfully, it was short. Read it if you must, it's free so there is that.
