Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

The four former Hokage join the battlefield and the members of the OG teams (bar team Guy) receive some last-minute screen time. Their relevance to the plot has distinguishably dwindled throughout Part II, even Shikamaru and Ino are only relevant to the plot right now because they have to fulfill their fathers' duties, but it was still great to see how far all of them have come.

Team 7 is also back stronger than ever, stepping up as the Sannin of their generation. Seeing Sakura performing high-level jutsu after high-level jutsu was great, but I wish Kishimoto had given her more than just Tsunade's abilities. Naruto and Sasuke are their teachers' students too, but they've also developed jutsu and fighting styles of their own. It's a little bit unfair, not to mention that she's the only team 7 member that is close to the level of the OG Sannin, since Naruto and Sasuke have reached an exclusive league of characters that no longer abide to the Narutoverse power scaling. Her lack of screen time, combined with a lower quality of writing for her character, have greatly hurt her. And that's a pity, 'cause she and Tsunade have been constantly praised for their chakra control, and since they already have a connection with their summoning, they could have easily learned the slugs' version of Sage Mode. In another review, I've talked about how Sakura could have trained with Kurenai and develop her own fighting style, combining Genjutsu with her Taijutsu and chakra enhanced strength. It would've been cool to explore, or at least see, the Shikkotsu Forest too. So much wasted potential. It was also sad to see Sai being sidelined just like that once Sasuke was back and he was no longer needed to complete the line up.

With only 6 more volumes to go, things are starting to wrap up (or so it may seem). The Gokage and Orochimaru and his subordinates are heading to the battlefield, while Obito is being cornered by Kakashi, Minato and the others. While minorly flawed, volume 66 is nevertheless a great one.

Now we're talking!

This kind of payoff, so many volumes in the making, is always super satisfying. To see Naruto, Sasuke, and even Sakura achieve their inherent greatness by following their teachers' footsteps and become the new Sennin is very rewarding indeed. Kishimoto tries to repair some of the damage he's been doing to Sakura since the very beginning, and succeeds only partly - the damage was too big to start with, and the reparations are not nearly enough. She is still by far the weakest and dumbest member of Cell no 7, still completely besotted with Sasuke (although the role of the resident idiot had been reassigned to Karin, who exists in the story only to be a literal source of food. Ugh.), and generally a two-trick pony. The jokes remain terribly lame, but by that point it's tradition.
So why 9 stars, I hear you ask?

Two words. Obito and Kakashi. This volume portrays their conflict in all its bewildering splendor. The childlike hurt and spite on the face of Obito are impressively rendered in the juxtaposition to Kakashi's sadness and resolve, driving home the divergence in the growth and maturity of these two former friends.

Spider-man must be laughing his spandex stockings off, because that old adage, "with great power comes great responsibility," plays a key role here, along with the themes of friendship, camraderie, and community. I like how deftly Kishimoto weaves these threads in his ever-changing portrayal of the role of hokage, who, in the end, is the epitome of servant leadership. The hokage are chosen to lead by their village, but in order to secure that choice they must be willing to sacrifice themselves for the common good. This is something Sasuke still doesn't seem to understand, but then, he's Orochimaru's pupil, and that guy never did anything for the sake of others.

Of course, this volume is such an enormous payoff for all the fans that I can never properly describe it without you actually having read it, but here's spoilertime...

Team 7 is working together as the new Senin, and it's just one big ball of wow.

We readers like a good payoff. We live for it. Especially an entire series building and collapsing and building and collapsing, we wish and and we pray and we never truly believe we could ever see the day... AND THEN, beyond expectations, we get the godforsaken payoff.

Never mind anything that came before. This was too cool to pass up.

Putting aside all the cheese churned out of this, the whole volume contains so much action and epic moments of friendship and solidarity in the face of evil.

There was also a much-needed conversation between Kakashi and Tobi that finally allows the two to tackle the elephant in the room and show us how they've both dealt with their grief.

Nothing like a new form of evil as a cliffhanger to keep this series finale exciting though!

While the previous Hokage are trying to tame Ten Tails, Madara and Obito are playing each other to turn the situation around to their advantage. It was good to see old Cell Seven in action again. I was awaiting their reunion as a team for so long.

This is a review of the entire series.

Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.

Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.

Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.

On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.

Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.

Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.

Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.

The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.

The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.

On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.

Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...

Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.

I've found myself back in the trash can. I've been feeling very nostalgic about Naruto lately, mainly due to the fact that I keep seeing its sequel Boruto EVERYWHERE! I do have an interest in checking that out, so I figured I'd finally finish Naruto since I only had 7 volumes left and they take me 30 minutes a piece to read. The series has definitely fallen quite far from where it originally was quality wise. The writing isn't as good, the story feels like it's dragging on far too long, and the villains are just carbon copies of villains we've seen before. None in this volume are as memorable as Zabuza, Orochimaru, Gaara, Itachi, or even the Akatski from the beginning of the Shippuden era. However, I can't deny the excitement I feel seeing these characters I spent years loving once more. With this nearing the end of the story, I found that a number of characters have changed quite a bit from the beginning of the series. Not all of them, but a good number and the ones that I feel matter most. There's definitely an excitement in seeing Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakara working as a team once again after years of them being apart. Overall, I'm eager to read the remaining volumes I have left and then seeing what Boruto has to offer.

So much happens in this volume but the most disturbing thing is that Gamakichi now smokes. How old is he? I thought he was younger than Naruto, then again, what do I know about Toad ageing?

Madara's face when he first senses Hashirama is hilarious and the fact that they just go back to being them when they finally meet? Old friends indeed.

Naruto looks so badass on page 28, after taking the Ten-Tails atomic bomb and simultaneously protecting everyone. Still got enough energy to goad Madara and triggering the Ten-tails with the biju energy inside him. So the ten-tails has thoughts as it gets mad at seeing the bijuu in Naruto? It seems to see him as the Sage of Six Paths and this enrages it because the Sage broke him apart.

Everything is getting quite complicated as Obito attempts to talk-no-jutsu Naruto to talk-no-jutsu him back so he can essentially talk-no-jutsu himself out of his current situation. He's being so obvious about it, even Kakshi sees it. He's got to make it clear, that's why he's being so OTT with claiming he's empty inside, showing off the hole where his heart should be. Real on the nose. We all know what this "hole" talks all about. It's the undoing of Obito who is about to become a jinchuriki. What do jinchuuriki need to remain human? Someone to fill that hole inside them.

When Naruto's down to recharge, Sakura takes up the mantle of rallying the troops whilst Shikamaru gets a hasty plan in motion to combat the Ten-tails' cataclysm. It saves them until Namikaze Minato, the fourth Lord Hokage and father of the chosen one, brusts in with the best entrance and transports the blast into the sea. Right on time just like his son. He's closely followed by three other Hokage who aren't as young and spritely but all four immediately show why they're different from anyone else you've seen, especially Hashirama. It seems so easy for him. And then comes freaking Sasuke.

He really comes back acting like it's a normal reunion and nothing has happened. Spouting "nauseating" nonsense about becoming Hokage. He's done trying to take Naruto's life, now he's gonna take his dreams, his whole damn identity. It's one of the most shocking scenes in all of Naruto. I would have just slapped him for that nonsense. Noone is going to acknowledge you Sasuke, you are never gonna be the type of Hokage Itachi envisions.

How dare they say all this sh*t about team 7 being back and all this new three hoo-ha. There's another member of team 7, SAI! But, good for you Sakura. Good for you. I truly and deeply wish it was supposed to be true, but you have definitely worked hard at improving yourself. You don't have to resign yourself to the background because you're Tsunade's student and you're a fighter too. Love that she defended her own power. Good For Her! But I despise who she becomes around Sasuke. She's here, so determined about her strength and development, but he makes her uneasy and questions him. She should focus on herself, what's Sasuke ever done for her? And stop blushing, he isn't worth it.

The trio returned spurns everyone to action, all of Konoha 12 (11). The Ino-Shika-Cho-Yo is unleashed, once again proving that they're the best team. That's a real team who work together. The "new three" unleash their summons, two who are new additions. Loved seeing Gamakichi again, the toads are my faves. Not to disparage Sakura in any way, but she stays behind to heal everyone, a great incredible feat only possible because she achieved 100 Healings, whilst Naruto and Sasuke instinctively work together to unleash powerful jutsu. Jutsu Naruto believes they were born to do together. Team 7 is three (four) individuals in a group, not a team and sometimes it becomes a duo. But even those two can't set aside their rivalry for a second.

How has Orochimaru become comic relief? He is a creepy pervert and not even his own creepy little lab rats, is that all he sees then as, can stand it. Somebody kill him!

I can empathise with why Sasuke hates the village and now wants to change it, but what did the bijuu do to you? They've been oppressed by humans for centuries and you wanna be another perpetrator Sasuke? I thought you wanted to change things? Sasuke's a great character and one of my favourites but also high in the list of characters I'd want to slap. Everyone, except perhaps Naruto, is apprehensive about Sasuke's return. Even Sakura questions what he wants. He's still not made it very clear as yet what his "change" entails. Gotta keep us all on our toes till Naruto vs Sasuke 5000.

Why do I feel bad for Obito? Even now he still can't beat Kakashi his rival and his only ally (who he kind if hates anyway) views him as disposable trash. He himself wanted to burn all his bonds, but I still find it kind of sad to see. Especially knowing it's his false reality. Madara is just about to sacrifice him for the rinne rebirth by controlling him with Black Zetsu, but Obito breaks out of his mind control. How? Those damned bonds. It's his former team's memory and his teacher standing before him that bring him back enough to fight Madara's hold. That scene is emotional. Minato realises it's Obito, the boy he nurtured, who shared his dream, who was loved by his wife; who killed them, destroyed their village and orphaned their son. Minato thought he took down the man who tried to kill his son, but Obito's coming back as the Ten-Tails jinchuuriki.

Oh, man! This is the volume I have been waiting for. We're FINALLY gotten to the meat of this war, I really hope that there won't be any more lengthy flashbacks because I'll feel really silly if there's another one right after I stated that like I did in my past reviews. I really feel like we're entering the finale of the series and to this war and the stakes only continue to raise higher and higher. We get to see how far Naruto has come as he lends Kurama's chakra to all of the Allied Shinobi Forces and uses it to defend against Ten Tails, but just as things start getting cataclysmic, Naruto and Kurama run out of charka. Something I felt was interesting was that Ten Tails felt all of the other Biju's power and saw Six Paths in Naruto. Kakashi and Obito get separated from the main battle for a little while and we get a bit more information about Rin's death from Obito himself. We learn that Rin intentionally leaped in from of Kakashi's lightning blade after being kidnapped and forced into becoming a Jinchuriki. We get to see more of Obito's reasoning for his motives and he even tries to convince Kakashi to come to his side. On the frontline, Ten Tails is charging up another attack, but Naruto is out of commission and we see Sakura rally the troops. We haven't really seen much of Sakura in this arc, so I'm happy to see her participate more. We get to see Shikamaru follow in his father's footsteps as the strategist for the Allied Shinobi Forces and his plan gives them just enough time for Minato to make his entrance, which leaves me with a few questions. Why is nobody surprised that Naruto is the son of the Fourth Hokage? Did everyone in Konoha know except for him? Or did he tell everyone after the Pain fight? Naruto was an outcast in the village for most of his life, so I would assume that his lineage was hidden from the villages residents. The rest of the Hokage get there and suppress Ten Tails. I love seeing all the little interactions between everyone. Madara is so excited to see Hashirama and Hashirama just shuts him down. I also forgot that Minato had a piece of Kurama's chakra, so seeing him in Nine Tails mode took me off guard. And the thing we've all been waiting for, Sasuke is finally reunited with his fellow Konoha Shinobi and announces that he plans to be Hokage. Sasuke...there is absolutely no way that you will ever become Hokage after your little rogue shinobi stunt, like, Naruto is a shoe-in for Hokage. He has saved the village and is currently saving the world, I think he's got you beat. Same thing with the rest of the kids in their class. We finally get to see all of the other cells pulling their weight! I love seeing them fight and I wish they had more of a presence in the series. It's the first time we've seen them all together since the Chunin Exam and they've all grown so much. Kishimoto finally lets Sakura do something. I know that she's a medic ninja and she's been healing everyone, but we never get to see her fight. She's been trained by Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, and we rarely get to see her pulling her weight. I feel like Kishimoto realized that he didn't let Sakura have any development, so he wanted to finish out her arc in, like, two chapters. She ends up healing everyone again and things are finally turning up for the Allied forces. There's also a chapter that shows Orochimaru helping Tsunade and teasing that the Kage will fight with everyone on the frontlines. Tsunade is finally back in one piece. Kakashi and Obito continue their little fight and Obito gets mortally wounded the same way Rin died. Madara sees that things are coming up for the Shinobi and decides that this is the perfect moment to be reborn and forces Obito to preform the Rinne Rebirth on him, but plans change when Obito changes himself into the Ten Tails Jinchuriki. I didn't really have a lot to say about this volume, but I really enjoyed it. All the fights were really fun and I always love seeing the other kids. Can't wait for next volume! Also, I only just caught the title of this volume and I really loved seeing the parallels between the Great Three Shinobi and each of their apprentices. It's been foreshadowed throughout the entire series, but now that it's come to fruition, I can say that the execution of this was done very well. I'm glad that the New Three are finally together, once again.

I have the omnibus but rated these individually to help with my goodreads goal :) There were many surprises in this one and there will be quite a lot of SPOILERS AHEAD. Several advances caught me by surprise although I'm glad that Kishimoto is finally wrapping this up since all the cards are on the table, we've had a fair share of action scenes, and the characters are mostly developed well. Kishimoto himself mentioned how he never thought this series would last this long to begin with but several years down the line he went ahead and made Boruto haha

This was a good volume overall although I think Sakura catching up with the rest of team 7 was too abrupt and I still don't much believe that she's all that powerful. The edotensei is extremely cool and allowed for Naruto and his dad to be reunited and Obito went ahead and became the jinchuriki of the ten-tailed beast. I'm not quite sure how but Orochimaru is suddenly a good guy and I'm pretty sure that Sai is dead. Sasuke and Sakura also seem to make fun of Naruto by both stating that they wish to become the Hokage and Sasuke's reappearance is extremely shady to say the least but it's extremely fun to identify the similarities between this generation and the one which came before. What makes Naruto so interesting is how Kishimoto allowed them to both happen at the same time despite so many deaths thanks to the edotensei. 6 volumes to go :) I can't believe it.

This arc took forever but it finally got here! Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura together again! There's a lot of good this volume, and a lot of stuff that's been soured by how long this arc has been overall. Everyone (including the supporting characters) are finally using their brand new ultimate jutsu- why weren't they in the 100+ chapters of random battles before now? Why are we still pulling punches with major character deaths, with more disappointing 'genjutsu' fake-outs for the reader? Why is Obito's backstory and motivation so terrible and riddled with contradictory plot? Why are the past Hokages here stealing the spotlight? Sure, the actual moments of our Team 7 together again, working as a unit, are great, but the rest of it is too little too late. Madara is still nothing more than a screaming lunatic who doesn't actually do anything, and the Ten Tails is still a generic explodey beast with no will of its own. All the cool and hype moments can't save all the other plot bullshit this volume has to make fit.

Wah epic.

In this volume, we're still in the thick of the battle. I like that everyone is doing their best to overcome what seems to be an unbeatable foe. But every time Naruto talks about or shows how desperately he wants to protect his comrades, how he will put himself in front of everyone against all danger, I'm reminded of how lonely and ostracized he was for most of his life. And I get really pissed, to be honest.

Over the many years of making my way through this manga, I've gone from teenager to adult. I wonder if that's why, looking back on it, Naruto is one of those manga where I'm like, "every adult sucks, they can all die. Let's start with the new generation and raise them to be better without the influence of the sucky adults."

I know we're getting close to the end, and honestly a part of me wants Naruto to say screw Konoha, and all ninja, I'm out. It won't happen, but sometimes I wonder.

This part of the war arch is really starting to pick up! I’m really enjoying where the story is going and the art work is fantastic.

The fight between Kakashi and Obito was very well done! I love how as they we’re fighting it had the flash backs as them fighting as kids. The whole fight was much more emotional than many of the fights has kakashi saw him as a brother. Very good fight.

Was also cool to see all of team 7 back. Same with all the past hokage joining the battlefield. Minato teleporting the beju bomb away was super cool.

I also really liked how obito essentially pulled a uno reverse on madara. Madara used zetzu to take over obitos body to make him sacrifice himself to do the renine rebirth so that madara can become the 10 tails jinchuriki. And Obito was like nah I’m not reviving you and imma become the 10 tails. Super cool. Can’t wait to read the next volume!
