Loved Reflection by Kim Cresswell so I'm stoked to read this!!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

At a fairly short 153 pages, Kim Cresswell wastes no time jumping into the meat of this fast paced story. The opening scene is of DA Lauren Taylor and her father in a limo following a dinner birthday and the subsequent wreck that follows. The kicker is that they didn't just wreck...they were run off the road by a ubiquitous black van. And the kicks keep on coming. Soon Lauren realizes that the numerous attempts on her life are linked to the trial of the city's crime lord...the one that she is prosecuting for the murder of his wife.

Thank goodness she has a good and loyal detective to protect her. Too bad that detective just happens to be Lauren's ex lover Eric. Now she has to deal with old feelings showing back up when she should be concentrating on her case. But the love between these two never died. It was just subdued by Eric's love of the drink and Lauren's reliance on her rich father to support her emotionally and financially. But this is no longer the case, and thank goodness they have both grown up. Because this mafia boss means business. With snitches in the police force and traitors where they least expect it, it's a long, hard road to a conviction, and blood and death lay on their path to a successful trial.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

MY LIKES:
As with Cresswell's first novel, this book was literally stuffed full of action...constant movement forward made this a truly edge of your seat experience. The fact that this is a bit of a second chance romance lent a mature air to Eric and Lauren's feelings for each other.

Eric is completely self confident, which is super sexy in a man, but especially here. My favorite line in the book: (this never gets old)
"What can I get ya?" the bartender asks.
"I'm looking for the driver of a black GMC van?"
"Look mister this is a bar not the lost an dfound. Order a drink or get out."
Eric pulled out his badge and slapped it on the counter. "Let's try this one more time..."

Why does that make ME feel powerful?!?!!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

MY DISLIKES:
There was some odd phrasing and word usage....if I remember right, I also had this issue with this author's other book as well. This book is set in the late nineties, and yet there is both a cell phone and a laptop mentioned. Now, I'm a child of the nineties...(Class of '99, woohoo!) and I'm fairly certain laptops weren't around, and cell phones were an extreme rarity, mostly only car phones were used by normal people. Also, there is a point in which one of the street kids uses the word "sick"...meaning amazing, and I know we didn't talk like that back then. Just sayin'...

Also, the dialogue sometimes felt choppy and awkward. More like it's being written instead of spoken, if that makes sense. It made for a bit more dramatic of a scene, but felt less natural. I did enjoy the action but for the length of the book, it almost felt excessive. A LOT happens in a very short amount of time, but this couple still finds the time and the emotional wherewithal to rekindle and old flame? It just didn't feel genuine. It felt rushed.

Still, I enjoyed the book. The story itself was riveting. The execution needed a little work, and maybe it only needed more page space.

High tension, high intrigue, and an angry mob boss put young Assistant DA Lauren Taylor on the defensive as she prepares for the biggest courtroom case of her life. All she has to do is stay alive long enough to put the head of one of New York’s biggest crime families behind bars, and the jury is out on whether she can pull that off. Her greatest ally is a man she knew and loved long ago, who shredded her heart as his own demons of guilt tried to drown him in an alcohol induced haze. Lethal Journey by Kim Cresswell hits the ground running and does not stop! Are people as they seem or is there more to them? As the attempts on her life escalate and people close to her go missing, Lauren doesn’t have many options on who to trust. Enter the one man who broke her heart, Eric, a homicide detective who has also felt the burn of getting too close to the mob. Can Lauren trust him? Does she have a choice? It would be so much easier if her heart would stay out of it, wouldn't it?

Kim Cresswell’s talent shines through again! With a talent for setting the stage, bringing in the characters and cuing the action, she held me from page one. She is not afraid to write a tale that is real, where the good guys do not go unscathed and they are not perfect. There is grit in her style, and when she says you are in a warehouse with a stench, you smell it. The romantic tension runs high, and using character flashbacks to the past not only builds on the development of each character as a flesh and blood entity, but serve to eventually bring everything full circle with an ending that you will NOT see coming!

I received an ARC review copy in exchange for my honest review from the author and I honestly hope she is busy with that magic pen of hers.

ARC provided by publisher and author for a honest review.

Lethal Journey by Kim Cresswell is a winner. This romantic suspense story has all the elements a good book should have. The book is well written. The main characters are well developed and come to life. The secondary characters are realistic and are a huge support to the characters and plot. The plot is original, well executed, and fast paced. The overall flow of the story is fast paced, intense, and full of surprises. The sexual chemistry between the main characters is sizzling. Overall, this is a very good book.

District Attorney Lauren Taylor is about to go to trial in a high profile case against mob boss Gino Valdina. This case can make or break her career. This case may also be the end of her life.

Mysterious accidents begin to happen to Lauren and her father, who is the head district attorney. Threats are made, evidence disappears, people are being hurt. All evidence and clues lead to Gino Valdina. It is almost impossible to prove he is behind everything that is happening. It is obvious he has connections inside the courts and inside the police department.

What makes this case even more dangerous is the fight for power inside the mob's circle. They are all vying for Gino's position as mob boss.

The only person Lauren can turn to and trust is her former boyfriend, Detective Eric Brennan. Their relationship had ended on a bad note. As Eric learns of Lauren's troubles he realizes these may be related to the case he is working on. He is working on finding his father's killer in a mob related raid. Could these two cases be related? Can he save Lauren from the same fate as his father?

As Eric and Lauren investigate the accidents, the crimes committed, the relationship of those crimes to her present case, they realize they may have a chance of a permanent relationship that can last. It can only last if they can stay alive.

This book was intense, edgy, and kept me on the edge of my seat. There were surprised I did not see coming.

I highly recommend this book! Kim Cresswell is a very gifted writer and is the master of suspense.

***I received an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.***

Lethal Journey is a short crime novel that is incredibly intriguing and fast paced. Lauren Taylor is an attorney working in the District Attorney’s Office. She is the lead attorney prosecuting a very well know mafia boss accused of killing his wife. Lauren has a lot to prove as her father is the lead District Attorney, and he will be retiring soon, not to mention the rivalry between her and the other male attorney, Troy. As the trial date nears, Lauren and her father begin receiving threats and several attempts are made on their lives. Detective Eric Brennan is also investigating the Valdina family because he thinks it’s connected to his father’s killing. This is where the story gets very interesting because Lauren and Eric were once lovers and now find themselves thrown together again. Will they find romance again before one if not both of them are killed?

The novel is more crime thriller than romance although I was able to see and feel the incredible chemistry between Lauren and Eric. When I say it is a thriller and fast paced, I am not kidding! There is so much that happens in the course of this short book that it will make your head spin. Once I started reading, it was very hard to put down. I would think I knew who was behind all the killings and disappearances, and the author would completely pull the rug out from under my feet. The last few pages were unbelievable!!!! I really did not see that ending happening. In fact, I had to stop and re-read the last few pages to make sure I was reading the words correctly. There has only been one other crime thriller that has fooled me like this one did. It was very well-written especially seeing as it was a shorter novel. I am looking forward to reading more by Kim Cresswell. If you are in the mood for a fast paced thriller, give this one a try!

I am so in love with this book!

The action is very riveting. I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out "who done it". Just about the time I thought I had it there would be a twist or turn or another character thrown into the mix that blew my theory out the window. In the end, I had it right, but didn't know for sure until it was explicitly stated. Then there was even a twist to THAT!

The characters are so personable. I felt deeply connected to all of them but my heart truly found oneness with Lauren. There were several chapters later in the book that were extremely difficult for me to read because I was so connected with her. I won't give out spoilers by explaining but we've both lived through somewhat the same experience and I was touched by her trial.

All in all two thumbs up, five stars, and a profound desire to tell EVERYONE about this book. Go get it now! You won't be sorry.

I love a good crime thriller, and Lethal Journey is certainly that! The fast pace keeps you turning pages, and the suspense builds beautifully in Kim Cresswell’s latest work. And who doesn’t love a story involving the mob?

Lethal Journey follows DA Lauren Taylor, prosecutor for a notorious member of the mob, who needs to be silenced, and quick. When her father and ex-lover become entangled in the web, it becomes a whole lot more interesting.

Character development took a little while to get into, but did not disappoint in the end.

There are too many elements to this novella that can’t be discussed, but let’s just say, put it on your ‘to read’ list.

This was a very surprising story with an ending that will blow your mind. No one seems to be innocent from friends of the family to business associates everyone seem guilty. The author puts so many twists and turns your head will spin as you try to work out who did it and who will be next on the killers list. The author gives you flash backs of Lauren that she would rather forget that pulls you in making your heart break for this family. There was death in her family at a very young age, she has lost so much and may lose more even her life before the killer is done.. The who and why will really bring home news in today’s headlines. The author gives you an action packed, intriguing, intense suspenseful mystery from the first page that keeps your heart beating overtime as she pulls you from one scene to the next keeping you so invested you forget you are listening.

Ms Hansen does a great job on this narration the only issues I saw was when she was speaking in her own voice she sounded like she was reading it, it wasn’t as smooth as the rest of the audio. The narrator’s voice is good, her character voices are outstanding really pulling you in with true emotions and excitement. There are no background noises or any places where the volume changes. I heard no repeat of words just a smooth exciting listen. If any breaks were taken I could not tell. Her many different character voices are outstanding you have no trouble knowing who is speaking or what emotion they are feeling. Her female voices were just as wonderful as her males. This is one narrator that can really pull off the emotion turmoil that the author wants you to feel giving you a highly entertaining listen as you are impacted by the facts of being hunted down as bullets fly around you. I had no trouble visually playing the scenes in my mind as the narrator unfolded them for me. Ms. Hansen’s really puts the excrement into the read grabbing your attention and holding it from the first page to the last making your heart beat faster as her tones match the action going on around you.

I really enjoyed this audio it has a great plot which at times has you one the edge and at other times blow my mind. There is a little romance from a man from Lauren past who she never got over. He takes keeping her safe seriously as things heat up between them it gets even hotter when the plot thickens as the author spins a tale of danger making the read keep guessing who wants her dead. Everything is pointing to Gino Valdina the head of the New York crime family whose wife was killed and is on trial for her murder. It goes much deeper than this when family and friends end up dead leaving Lauren at a lost. She is on a downward spin as friends look to be enemies.

Nick adds a lot to the story line as he does his best to keep Lauren safe. He has ghost of his own that has haunted him through time but seems to be getting his act together. Her father is a very strong man who has always been there for her always being her hero. I liked all these characters and supporting characters that give so much to the plot and adds lots of mystery. Although this is somewhat a romance the story is based more of mystery, thriller and suspense. It is a very entertaining story that will keep you on the edge time and again. The ending did cross my mind at one point but I wasn’t sure it still have a very big impacted. If you are looking for a short read or listen that keeps you invest this is the one for you with thrills and action from start to finish. It is short and to the point with no fillers, each word has a part to play in this outstanding suspenseful read with an author that knows how to keep you spellbound from her very talented writing style.

I requested the audio from audiobookboom.com I thought it would be a great audio and found I was right. Great story as well as narration that really pulls you in leaving you on the edge.

Excerpt
September 1997
Rain pounded down.
Lauren Taylor squinted through the windshield, a backwash of water battered the glass. She flicked the wipers on high and tightened her hands around the steering wheel. With a quick glance in the rear-view mirror she noticed headlights behind her. The vehicle appeared to speed up, fall back, and then speed up again.
Her muscles tensed. “That driver behind us seems to be in a big hurry.”
Her father leaned forward in the seat and peered into the side mirror. “He’s all over the road. Might be drunk or something.”
“He’s crazy driving like that in this weather. I’m letting him go by.” She downshifted the Jaguar and steered onto the side of the road and rolled to a stop.
As the van raced by. A giant wave of water pelted the side of the car.
Her father watched out the window. “Christ, he’s flying”
Taillights flickered and quickly faded ahead into the blackened night.
With a quick glimpse in the mirror, Lauren steered the car back onto the road, her grip relaxed around the wheel. “That’s better.”
Her father repositioned himself in the leather seat and stretched his legs. “The Law Society’s dinner is next week. You going?”
God, the dinner. She’d bought an expensive navy and white designer dress for the occasion and even toyed with the idea of having her hair cut into something more sophisticated and polished for a New York district attorney.
“I’ll have to check my schedule.”
“Not good enough. I want you there, Lauren. My chance to show you off. Do some bragging, big time.”
She couldn’t help but smile. “Okay, Dad. Okay.”
“And don’t forget to bring a date for protection. Don’t want a bunch of drunken seedy lawyers groping you on the dance floor. And by the way, I heard Eric was back in town.”
Her smile faded as she remembered the annual dinner years before. She’d never forgotten a single detail of that night—how Eric held her in his arms and how his mouth devoured her willing lips then pulled away and left her mouth burning for more...
“What else did you hear about him?” she blurted out.
“Not much. Can’t even remember where I heard the news. Thought you didn’t want to talk about Brennan?”
“I don’t. I just wondered when he got back.”
Her father's jaw tightened. “Don’t know.” His voice turned hard. “Just heard he’s back.”
At one point in their relationship, Eric begged her to come with him and start a new life in Florida. She didn’t have the courage to leave her father and walk away from her job. Four years later, she was taking on the most important case of her career—prosecuting Gino Valdina, head of New York’s crime family, just like her father had done a decade before. But this time would be different. Gino Valdina wasn’t going to get away with murder.
The sky split and lightning lit the wet road. Lauren eyed the exit sign to Hyde Park.
The whining squeal of an engine roared from behind.
Lauren glanced over her shoulder. “God, that van is back.” She clicked on the turning signal and steered onto the off-ramp. Her eyes darted back to the side mirror.
Headlights swerved from side to side.
A shiver drove up her spine. She clutched the steering wheel.
“I’m calling the police.” Her father grabbed his cell phone out of the glove box and turned it on. “Damn it. I can’t get a signal.”
“Keep trying.”
The van’s driver gunned the engine.
The grill came into view, massive and powerful.
Close. Too close.
Metal connected and scraped against the bumper.
The van shoved the Jaguar ahead on the road.
High-beams from the other lane blinded her.
Lauren blinked and turned her head.
The van rammed the back of the car. Metal popped as the back window disintegrated into the back seat.
The seat belt snapped across her shoulder. Her head slammed back on the head rest then forward. “Oh my God!”
The cell phone flew from her father’s hand. “What the—”
“Dad!”
Like a slingshot the Jaguar shot down the slick road.
Lauren slammed on the brakes.
The car slid a half circle and spun out of control. A massive tidal wave of water washed over the roof.
Her father clutched the dashboard with both hands. “The tree!”
She yanked the steering wheel hard to the left.
Wood splintered. Metal buckled, squealed and cracked. The air bag struck her body like a fist, and smacked her head against the side window. She pushed at it, viciously. With every move, fiery pain shot through her face and down her neck. The sickening sweet stench of gasoline and smoke filled her nostrils. Her head clouded.
Lauren heard her own voice, pinched and muffled, cry out. “Dad!” until her words drifted into silence.

Lethal Journey is a fast paced action packed novella that keeps you on the edge of your seat!

At only 153 pages in length, it dives straight into the action immediately and just when you think it is going to slow down it speeds back up again. It is well written and the mystery keeps you guessing until the very end. The story is told via a dual point of view between Lauren and Eric and gives a great visual effect from both the victims to the police sides of this story.

This novella has a likeable and I intriguing set of characters, I even liked the bad guys they were so crazy and couldn’t guess what they would do next. Lauren Taylor is the district attorney who is leading the prosecution case against mob boss Gino Valdina for the murder of his wife. She is determined to get a conviction against him which her father failed to do several years earlier for numerous other crimes. Lauren’s life and that of her father are under threat and several attempts are made on their lives. Eric is a police officer and former lover of Lauren. His father was killed in the line of duty by one of Gino Valdina’s goons and he is on a mission to find that person. Due to the attempts on Lauren’s life they are thrown together once again.

I devoured this book and I wanted more especially at the end as I couldn’t get enough of these characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella and suggest it to anyone who wants a quick, fast paced, action packed read with a little romance thrown in to steam things up and divert from the drama for a little while. Be sure to put this on your ‘to-read’ list.

This is the second book of Kim’s that I have reviewed and I highly recommend her first novel Reflection as well.

Note : This review was first published @ Readers' Muse

A lady lawyer and mafia – an enticing combination isn’t it? But does this combination ring a bell. It would if you had read “Rage of Angels” by Sidney Sheldon. The summary truly would make you believe that Kim (The writer) is obviously a wannabe Sheldon. But hey never judge a book by its cover. A seasoned reader will never do that unforgivable mistake and I am happy I didn’t either.

The book (or novella?!) was pleasantly surprising. The writer’s education as a lawyer is apparent. But the biggest problem with a lawyer turned writer is that, they tend to overdo the legal explanation part. Most often than not, it backfires and causes a migraine for the poor fellow reading the book. Thankfully, the writer didn’t over do the whole law thing!
The plot was cohesive and well strung. The characterisations were perfect to suit a thriller. Also, the book was fast paced. It took me just about 2 hours to finish it. Madness personified would be term I believe (Oh come on. Fast paced thriller. What else do you expect of me?)

One thing I truly don’t understand – Most legal thrillers predominantly tend to have this “Manhattan” backdrop and an Italian mafia. Sidney sheldon’s books! Mario Puzo’s books! You name it! This story isn’t an exception either. This would probably be my only small complaint about this book. I promised myself never to write a thriller involving mafia & Manhattan if I ever take up writing seriously!

To sum it up, this is the kind of the book that will take on an exceedingly fast ride and apply a sudden brake in the form of an ending. I can’t possibly describe the story or characters more without giving away the plot!

VERDICT: Go for it! It’s worth every penny!

RATING: 4 on 5

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I love a good romantic-suspense novel and I was so happy that this one exceeds the expectations I had for it. I’m used to a suspense novel that only gets intriguing by at least the 15th page. Lethal Journey is not one of those books. I was pulled in from the get-go and couldn’t stop reading no matter how hard I tried, and only stopped once real life hit me over the head and made me put it down.
The plot was strong and well-written, without leaving even a little bit of a clue as to whodunit. I loved that, because when it all came out, it made the shock-factor go through the roof. Fast-paced and completely riveting, this book was everything I love about romantic thrillers. The tension between the two main characters leaped off the pages and their chemistry had me burning up and more than once I shouted at the page that the two of them should just get a room and work things out. Of course, in the next sentence something related to the mystery would happen and bam! Sexual tension dissipated. But it never lasted long.
There was a big douchebag idiot in the book and boy was I happy at the way his story played out. Some might pity him, some might hate him. Me? I just got this warm feeling close to the end.
Typically I would give this book a five-star rating, but I’m giving it a four, because I would have liked a bit more of the characters backstory and I found it was a bit too short for my liking. Still an amazing read and a fantastic book that is perfect for a stormy night.

A fast-paced romantic action packed novella, Lethal Journey grabbed my attention from the first paragraph. An exciting ride all the way to the end.

The book synopsis describes the tale well, so I don't find it necessary to recap the tale here in this review.

I enjoy Kim Cresswell's tight style of writing with slowly revealing characterization throughout the story, some through dialogue. She has an ability to write excellent scene and action description allowing the readers imagination to soar. Lethal Journey is an example of excellent plot and sub-plot twists and turns keeping this reader guessing with each additional mystery clue as the D.A. and her Detective travel throughout this short read. The reality of crime vs law enforcement vs prosecution team made for interesting conflicts and unusual partners.

While I noted some minor concerns that a good proofreader could help the author identify, I found the entertainment overshadowed these. So, while not perfect, it is far closer to the 5.0 rating than a 4.0 would be. Lethal Journey is a heart throbbing read that is easy for me to recommend.

This review comes via my Amazon purchase of the Kindle version.

Cresswell`s latest story is intensely suspenseful and extremely emotional. She draws on real life events, even if they aren`t those most of us encounter everyday, to create an unforgettable tale. Cresswell uses medical and legal jargon to enhance her story. You are immersed in the world of the DA & of the crime syndicate of New York.

The characters in this novel are all quite well developed. I appreciate how you can really see them fighting against their pasts to be the people that they want to be, rather than the one that that society expects. The real life, down to earth dialogue enhances each of the characters. Cresswell also uses the appropriate dialect and slang for each of her characters, making each more realistic and unique.

Overall, this was a brilliant romantic suspense that will really keep you guessing. I was definitely thrown for a loop at the end. It`s a great, quick read for everyone.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Lauren is about to start the trial of her career prosecuting mob boss Gino Valdina for the murder of his wife. As the trail date looms closer mysterious threats, tragedy, and a love from her past wreck havoc on her life. Can she find out who is out to get her any why?

This is a Great mystery read. I enjoyed how everything came together at the end to wrap up the whole story. The characters were very well written with great back stories the helped you feel like you knew just who they were and you could understand how they came to the points they were at within their lives. Eric and Lauren's chemistry was great and not over the top. This was first and foremost a story about the mysterious events before the trail and the love story between the two leads was there to add depth and didn't take away from the actual storyline.

I really liked this story but it was a little short for me. I wanted more. :) I really liked the fast paced story and all of the twists and turns. I think the mystery of the story was really well written and the story would go really face and then slow down and lets you catch your breath before it takes off again. The two characters Lauren and Eric tell the story from their point of views and it's not hard to follow. I really liked it and would definitely recommend.

I remember the very first book series I ever fell in love with 20 years ago. That series is still alive and well today - Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta Series, I still gobble up a new Kay book release. So I DEFINITELY love a good crime story, and Lethal Journal is without a doubt a GREAT crime story.

Kim Cresswell grabs your attention from the very first page of the book. She writes well, builds suspense in layers and creates believable characters. The relationships in the book between Eric and Lauren, Lauren and her father, Eric and his partner are all well developed and have the reader feeling he or she knows each individual personally. The twist at the end is one I wasn’t expecting and manages to tie this novella up with a bow.

You know a book is great when you can't put it down, even when you need to go to the bathroom. You're trying to read faster to find out what is going on. This short story had all of that packed into it and more. Lauren and her father find themselves being run off the road. Was it because of the upcoming mafia trial they are prosecuting? Lauren's ex Eric is a NYC homicide detective who enters the picture, to help figure things out.
My heart is still pounding... very thrilling and suspenseful!

ADA Lauren is trying to succeed where her dad, District Attorney, had failed many years ago...put mob boss Gino Valdina behind bars for good. However, after being run off the road, Lauren realizes that she may be up against more than the mob...think dirty cops and others. Enter former flame, and homicide detective, Eric! The pair try to put past differences aside and work together to keep Lauren safe and find out who's behind the attacks on her and her father. When the dust finally settles, will Lauren bring the bad guys to justice or will she become yet another victim? There is a HUGE surprise at the end!!!

Lauren Taylor, Manhattan D.A., has lost everything. Prosecuting Gino Valdina has cost her everything she has held dear. Gino will do anything to save himself and so will Lauren, and Lauren is about to find out things are even more crazy than she thought, but she will find help in unexpected places.

This was a great action filled, suspenseful story. I love Ms. Cresswell's writing and have read/listened to many of her other books and enjoyed every one of them. I always feel as though I am part of the story, like I am right there with the person this time with Lauren, cheering and crying with her. I love the surprise twists they keep me on my toes. I had the audio narrated by Rebecca Hansen who has a way of differentiating the characters to make each one very different and stand out.

I loved it! Haven't stayed up till 2 to finish a book in a while! It kept me guessing the whole book on who was trying to scare and kill Lauren! After all the heartache Lauren and Eric deserve to be happy. I never would of guessed who it was, but they got what they deserved! Thank you Kim for another great read!

4.5* This was an enjoyable romantic suspense book. I like Kim Cresswell's writing and loved the Whitney Steele series and this was right up there with them. You won't be disappointed.
