Dealer's Soul

What the hell is a guardian and why does everyone think I am one?

I’ve been running for centuries and finally decided enough is enough. If Alaric wants me then he can come and get me. Without his assassin to do his dirty work he might have to make an effort to bring me back to Hell.

It has been months since I outed myself and here I am dress shopping for a teenager as if my life might not fall apart at any moment. It was almost a relief when a water dragon exploded into my life and I’m confronted by the Matriarch of a species thought to be extinct.

With the council on its way to Chicago to confront me and the Hunters making a move against supernaturals, I find myself undercover and facing an old enemy.

Who am I kidding? I’m loving life right now.

Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight? Mogan did once… and she’s been on the run from the results ever since. After killing her husband who had left her after trying to sell her to the Devil himself, this red-headed immortal has been running away for hundreds of years. Life has been hard over the centuries, moving from place to place, never putting down any actual roots, knowing that anyone you get close to is immediately in danger. But that’s life in the big city amirite?

Morgan has claimed Chicago as her city, and she’s committed to protecting it, come hell or high water. But The Council is coming to town and has summoned her without giving a reason. And weird things have been happening around Lake Michigan. The Hunters, a group of humans who hunt and kill supernaturals “for the protection and purity of the human race” (my but that sounds familiar), a group she thought she’d eliminated over 500 years ago, is acting up. It might be time for Morgan to put on her spy gear and see what she can see about the goings-on around ol’ Chi-Town.

“Dealer’s Soul” is the second book in the aptly named “Dealer’s Choice” series and features a kickass female protagonist, plenty of new takes on everyone’s favorite old myths, action for days, and a cast of characters that kept me turning pages all the way through. Add to that a steamy slow-burn romance and more twists and turns than a San Fransisco roadway, and you’ve got a novel that you simply cannot put down! This series just keeps me coming back, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next novel!

I received a free copy of this e-book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Liz Cain does a fabulous job of getting us invested in her characters. Morgan, the FMC, is a strong, independent woman with powers she's only just discovering. She's run into her past, her father-in-law Henry, and been running from the demon she made a deal with. Morgan has finally accepted friends into her life and that she can't do everything alone.

I love all the twists and surprises around every corner. This book kept me on my toes always wanting more. I can't wait to find out what happens in the last book coming out August 1st. I haven't been this invested in a series since I started Anita Blake back in 2006.

I was given an advanced copy of this book for my honest feedback and review.

WELL HELL'S FREAKING BELLS, what just happened! Yep I'm sitting here in a kind of daze trying to get over the sledgehammer whammy of that CLIFFHANGER. Oh I knew there would be twists, turns and surprises but THAT I was not expecting and damn if I'm not incredibly happy about it too. I just love it when an author can pull a trick or two out of the bag and blindside me with ease just like Ms Cain did so expertly here, while also managing to squeeze my heart, wringing every drop of emotion out of it with the words she is weaving. Yes I'm in awe, and now more than ever am dying to get to the last book.

Morgan has spent centuries trying to evade the demon who once held her soul, knowing he'll do just about anything to get her back by his side. But when she saves a water dragon, not even the threat of Alaric can make her run this time, as she learns of the danger coming to the supernatural world at large. With the Hunter's on the verge of finding a weapon to aid them in destroying all magic, a demon on her tail and a council demanding answers, how far will Morgan go to save those she has come to love.....

A very wise person (you know who you are) told me that I'd fall in love with Morgan once I met her, and holy hell they weren't wrong. I mean what's not to love! She has sass and snark for days, she can hold her own in a fight and she has an aversion to simply opening a door. But after a lifetime or two of running it's the simple fact that she has let down her guard enough to let people in and open herself up to love once more after being nearly destroyed by it, that has me not only loving her but rooting for her all the way. And trust me I don't fancy anyone's chances of standing in her way who threatens what she has come to see as precious.

For someone I've barely met throughout this series (so far) i simply despise Alaric the demon ruler of the underworld, who is as sneaky as a snake, and slippery as an oil slick. The despicable way he manipulates people so he can get what he wants has me wanting to throat punch him something awful, I'm sure by the next book I'm going to have more choice words to say about him but fantasizing about his immediate demise is enough. For now...

I knew when he came into the picture from the start my mysterious assassin had secrets, and learning his name was just the tip of the iceberg of peeling back the layers that he held hidden. The more I learned about him the more I wanted and damn never have I been so glad to find out I was wrong about a love interest before (Charlie). Nial has completely stolen my heart and I don't care if he never gives it back. Swoon.

Now normally I'd be distraught at reaching the last book in a series, but because I have a burning need to see what's in store for Morgan next I'm rushing to book 3 with abandon. Hells yes, bring it on. Highly recommend 😁

Well, I just finished this, and my mind is a little blown. Morgan is a sympathetic character because she’s just faced so much heartache, and it’s not stopping now. She has decided to stop running and now all the problems are coming to her. There are quite a few reveals in this latest installment, and I mostly figured out what they were. However, that didn’t really bother me as I quite enjoyed the ride. This ends interestingly, and I am now intrigued about the past of another of the characters, and I think maybe we might see a series about that past…I hope! A great installment full of action, love, surprises, and above all heart. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

In book 2, Morgan finds herself in the middle of a fight for her life. Friends were trying to help, but the Hunter's wanted all supernaturals dead. Morgan was part human, part demon, and part siren and had some very powerful skills, but Alaric, the demon wanted her back.
Morgan inserted herself into the Hunter's mix while they were looking for something very powerful under the sea. The writing is extraordinary! Good book.

Dealer's Soul is the second installment of the trilogy and it is even better than the first if that is possible. Morgan's character keeps growing, the accompanying crew keeps growing , and the world building is fabulous. I can't really say much about the story but those Hunter's really tick me off!!! And the cliffhanger in this story is a real heartstring tugger. Thank goodness we don't have long to wait for the next book. You really must read this series!!!!

Omg. So before reading this one, I reread the other one that is available.

The flow and awesomeness of the books go together well. I love the story concept. I love the characters, their flaws, their qualities. Great books.

Once again we’re brought into Morgan’s chaotic world, only this time….she’s accepted that she has friends and she’s not alone. I refuse to give spoilers, suffice it to say you won’t be disappointed even with the cliffhanger.

This was a fantastic continuation of Morgan's story, with some twists that I didn't see coming. The ending was a cliffhanger, but thankfully these books are releasing once a month, so it's not a long wait for the next. I'll be excitedly jumping into the third book soon!

Getting better all the time

This story just keeps getting better. Can’t wait for book 3. The characters are easy to follow and the action keeps on building. Hoping that the demons finally get defeated in this last story.

I love these books the way the author writes is just so magical , she has away of whisking you away from reality and dropping you smack down centre in her world. This second book carries on from the first book perfectly keeping you wanting more by enjoying the plot and loving the characters. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting. Escape from day to day crap and enjoying the magical roller coaster ride of Morgan’s story .

Morgan is such a strong character!

The love interest that’s building in this book has me on the edge of my seat! Can’t wait to see where my favorite lead female and favorite assassin are headed!

Morgan is learning that building relationships gives life to her and she will do anything for the family she has created.. can’t wait to see what chaos she rains down on our bad boy!

Im ready to see the building of her powers and her finally accept her fate!

Not so patiently waiting for book 3!!

OMG be prepared for an amazing book ride!! This book will take you all over Chicago while Morgan fights the good fight. The Hunters are back with a vengeance and a surprising twist there too (sorry no spoilers in my review)! The assassin whose name you do learn in Dealer’s Halloween (short story in All Hallow’s Eve), has a stronger presence this time around. Morgan is still kicking butt but in a more covert way this time.

Heads up that this book does end in a cliffhanger. However, if you’ve read book 1 (Dealer’s Choice), a few key players do get exposed and explain better in character development which I loved. I can’t wait for book #3 because this series thus far has been stellar!

I read this in one sitting, I could not put it down. In fact, I ordered pizza for dinner because I didn't want to stop reading in order to cook 🤣

I can't explain how much I love Morgan as a character. Watching her open her heart to her friends- both new and old- and take her place (only kind of willingly) protecting the magicals in her area. She also has to face enemies- both new and old.

Morgan has some new tricks and some fun twists in this book. Absolute 10/10

What a rollercoaster! Morgan is her usual fierce and fabulous self in this second installment. I love her snark. Several questions get answered in this one, the biggest being the assassin’s true identity. I loved the alleyway showdown with “Henry”. The introduction of the water dragons and the fact that their tails are creating the choppy lake waves had me smiling. There is such a wonderful cast of side characters, which add such dimension to the overall story! I cannot wait to se what happens in the final installment.

Okay, so we have seriously upgraded the fantasy level here. We already had Sirens, Demons, Hunters, Nymphs, Warlocks, Vampires and Angels... bit now we have DRAGONS!!!!???? Amazing. And Morgan continues to be the badass FMC we all adore!
The story continued on perfectly from the previous ones and still managed to contain a plot twist that had been carried through the previous stories as well. Very well written, very well paced and highly recommended.

2024:
This book was great - I loved it.
I feel like it took me wayyyyy too long to put two and two together with who the Assassin was based solely on his name. But I definitely had that feeling and was so glad to know I was correct!
The ending was brilliant. Morgan has definitely learned a thing or two in her time. I'm eager to see how this series ends up!

I loved this book so much; even more than book one. I loved the chemistry between Morgan and the Assassin, even though I suspected who he really is right at the beginning of the story. The water dragon shifters were amazing, Larlac just makes me laugh. The whole package just made me not want to put the book down. And the ending—Morgan, you clever girl. Loved it!

This second book in this series was utterly brilliant! Morgan has finally found her home and her family and will do anything to stop anyone who tries to take that away from her.

She still has many problems to deal with, namely The Hunters and their leader Henry, who is literally a blast from the past. Morgan knows she has to take him out before he can take her, but how is she going to manage that when it's quite obvious that he has made some kind of deal, very likely with the devil who is after Morgan as well!

In this one, so many things come to light and many questions are answered and all through it Morgan is fighting for her life, for her friends and most importantly her freedom! With the help of her friends and new found family, she tries her hardest to do what is right, but can she truly defeat all her enemies that are closing in on all sides at once?!

I love Morgan as the lead character - she is strong, determined and loyal, but she struggles with letting her friends get close after being on the run for so many years. she finds it hard to ask for help, but is learning to do so slowly and definitely when it is really needed. I did love the way she dealt with Alaric at the end - you'll have to read it to find out what I mean! Using his own words against him was perfect!

I can't wait to read the next book in this series and I know there's not long to wait for it either!

I received an ARC copy of this book, but this review is my own honest one.

More twists and turns in this book.
Morgen decides to stay in Chicago.
She starts to be friends with a water dragon. They have been put in danger and Morgan decides to help them.
The water dragons are able to help and train her to use her powers properly.
Morgan makes the assassin remember.
OMG that epilogue. I’m gonna need therapy. Can’t wait for book 3.

Morgan's story continues in this next instalment of the Dealer's Choice series.

Reading this one, I see Morgan growing more and her finally realising that being surrounded by friends and chosen family is way better than being alone. She'll do anything to protect them now, and they her.

Sirens, Nymphs, Angels, Warlocks, Vampires, Demons, Hunters, and Dragons. Oh my! This book has them all and I mean, come on, WATER DRAGONS!

I had my suspicions with who the shadow assassin was and I was not disappointed at all. That epilogue though. Absolutely broke my heart.

But alas, we have another cliffhanger and therefore, there's more coming and I can't wait to read it.

I recommend this book and the first two books that come before this...I know this is book two, but there is another short book that gives you more back ground on the main character and her history. This book is a feel good book with mystery, paranormal, a female main character who is amazing and developing into an even more awesome person. Looking forward to book Three!

Another awesome Morgan story! My goodness do I adore her! Her sass and spunk is right up my alley! She's not a girlie girl, heck, she's the antithesis of that! So when Macey and Layla bamboozle her into a shopping spree, I could literally feel her cringing. True to Morgan's life, even a simple outing such as this gets..... complicated. A pavement erupting complicated. A water creature in the middle of a concrete jungle complicated. Yep, welcome to a day in the life of Morgan! Oh and it gets worse, far far worse! Not only does she have a new dilemma to ponder on, Henry is still out for blood, her blood. And don't forget, there's Alaric too! He doesn't want her blood, he just wants her!

I adore Morgan! Morgan is fierce and feisty...... and her fetish is kicking doors in! Seriously! She gets a kick out of it....pun intended... and that mouth of her's, oh my word! THAT'S something else! She gets a kick out of riling notorious baddies and pushing Terry's buttons, both of which she does with such panache! Her actions, her reactions are simply awesome! I mean, she's so down to earth, trying to keep her nose clean, trying not to use her unique powers, trying to hide as best she can, trying to keep out of Alaric's clutches but somehow ALWAYS finds herself in the thick of things! Oh and there's that pesky father in law too...and an assassin... and the added pressure of Guardian! Well heck, I'd also be like "no no no no no!

I loved the water dragons, what a visual delight, Ms Cain painted such a vivid picture, I felt I was there! Thaijon, who is imposed on Morgan to solve a mystery, is an arrogant, pompous so and so. Until he meets Larlac! Oh heavens did I giggle at these two! What a turnaround! A REAL turnabout! I was almost disappointed he'd discarded his purple Spandex.... almost being the operative word.... that's how real this ingenious author pens all her characters! It's as if I'm actually there, seeing, smelling, feeling, ducking, immersing myself as a 'silent character', heck, all the thrills without the danger is a win win for me!

The fabulous cast in this fabulous story are.... FABULOUS! Our lovely stoic angel, yes, a REAL angel, our exuberant Macey, the ever disapproving Terry, even wacky Larlac are the reason Morgan diggs in her heels, she's not running again, heck 500 years is long enough! She now has to admit to herself that she has...gulp... friends 🤣 See, all of them hold steadfast behind Morgan, all care for Morgan and she has come to care for them. So she is determined to face anything that comes her way head on, convention or not, hidden magic or not, she holds true, she rallies, she fights, she solves and she helps. There is nothing NOT to love about Morgan, she's the real deal. A very unlikely romance develops, beautiful raw emotions are cast and I was soooo thrilled!, both for Morgan and Nial! Geez is he amazing! I loved how Ms Cain dangled him in front of us, keeping us guessing until she layed it all out! What a moment! And OMG WHAT A CLIFFHANGER! My jaw dropped in disbelief, my emotions felt like they were put through the grinder, I was NOT expecting THAT!

Oh lordie, was this a tsunami of a book! Taking me on a ride of sheer exhilaration! I was dragged, by none other than the fearsome Morgan, willingly, into an abyss, an abyss of sheer enjoyment, sheer excitement and sheer bliss! Boy does the author pack a punch! There were so many OH NO moments, I swear my heart was being jostled around like a crowd shoving trying to escape a fire! I'll end my gushing by saying READ THIS SERIES!!!!
