I won this book as a FirstRead.

Bob Hostetler spends about the first two-thirds of this book breaking down the Lord's Prayer line by line and the last third of the book covering other instances of Jesus praying or talking about prayer. He includes personal stories, quotes from the Bible and other theologians, and anecdotes from pop culture to make the book both an enjoyable read and thought provoking. Each chapter ends with a prayer related to the topic covered in that chapter.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It would be a good book to keep on hand for when you feel you are getting stuck in a prayer rut.

Amazing book! I really enjoyed reading this book along with my family. I read it aloud to them, so we all could get the benefits. This is a really thorough, engaging book that reveals some major insights into praying as Jesus taught us to pray. Focused on the red letter parts of the New Testament that show Jesus' words, this is a fascinating account of the meanings behind why Jesus said what He did about prayer. It illustrates what His life at the time showed about prayer, and how we can learn so much just from studying Jesus' words. I thought the author had so many great insights and quotes and examples from his own life to explain what he wrote that I feel like I've been in a marvelous class on prayer that opens up communing with God the Father in a whole new way. I'm definitely going to be referencing back to this book to keep the insights fresh in my mind.If you've ever struggled to pray, this is the book to help! I highly recommend it. Thanks to the author and goodreads for providing this complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.

“The Red Letter Life, 17 Words From Jesus to Inspire, Practical, Purposeful Living” by Bob Hostetler ranks as one of his best non-fiction books.

The book is based on seventeen words or phases that are key to the life of a Christian. Like Bob’s other non-fiction works the tone is casual and easy to read while at the same time being challenging and thought provoking. When I read this book, I could almost hear him speaking to me! I particularly enjoyed the combination of Scripture, personal stories and quotes from other authors that provided a deep exploration of the chapter topic.

It took me a while to read and digest this book. Each chapter caused me to pause and reflect. I often read chapters multiple times. While the words and message were simple and clear, I needed the time to let the words sink deep into my heart. Each chapter concludes with a ‘Final Word’, which offers an opportunity to respond to the chapter. I found most of the exercises very meaningful.

This spring has been extremely difficult for my family and I was in need of spiritual renewal and healing. Each chapter offered practical words to deepen and revive my relationship with Christ. This book has been most helpful in moving me forward and I plan to reread the book regularly.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to revive or deeper their walk with Christ. While this book may appear to be quick easy read, it is quite deep and meaningful.

NOTE: I was provided with a complimentary copy of the book to review, but I was under no obligation to write anything other than my own critique.

I highly recommend this book for individual study for anyone looking for a simple but deeper walk with Jesus. However, I feel it is designed and formatted--perhaps for better application to a person's life--for a group study. It is easy to read through this discussion of 17 key words in Jesus' ministry and glean what you need at the moment. However, taking 17 weeks with an accountability partner or group would strengthen the application of every word instead of the few that might grab your attention. Bob stays true to the title through his faith-centered presentation of each word. Unlike many self-help or -improvement books, he does not give you a list of activities which will make you a successful Christian. Instead, he opens the meanings, uses, and application of these words through a closer relationship with Jesus and faith. I call it a very timely book for renewing the fire of the Holy Spirit in the church.

This book was a refreshing read. Probing commonly used, powerful words from Jesus, I looked at terms such as "repent" in a new, more positive perspective. It is encouraging to read the author's persuasive thesis about actionable ways Christians can seek out and understand the purposeful ways that Jesus included these words in his lessons.

I would strongly recommend this book to any reader who would like to better understand the power of God's masterfully chosen lessons for practical living spoken by His son through the Holy Bible.

With his depth of spiritual insight and signature light touches of humor, Bob Hostetler examines 17 words from the red-letter sections of the Bible--the words of Jesus. Each chapter deals with one of these words to live by, such as Come, "The First Word," Bring, "The Word in Inclusion," Beware, "The Word of Warning," and Rejoice, "The Word That Sings and Dances." At the end of each chapter, Hostetler includes a "Final Word," a homework assignment of sorts, to put into practice these directives of Jesus that can turn the world upside down. My copy of this book now has more than 20 "sticky flags," marking notes I've written in the margin, underlined passages I want to remember, and pages I want to revisit. Hostetler's practicality comes through in such quotes as this: "We do not pray in order to get God to join our cause; we enlist in his cause. We do not pray to get him to do what we want; we pray to align ourselves with his agenda." And "Greed does not enrich; it impoverishes. It will not bring contentment; it prevents it. It will always cheat you and leave you poorer than before." With this book Hostetler gives us a great blueprint for living the Red-Letter life that delights the Father.

Hostettler explores the action words used by Jesus when he talked to his disciples -- from "come" when first called to "go," the great commission. If a Christian is to grow in his walk, he needs to obey the words of Jesus contained in these 17 verbs. I enjoyed looking at the words of Jesus from this perspective.

This book! Wow! The author’s insightfulness and prospective were eye-opening. The historical background given was so helpful to understanding the whole picture. Very engaging. There were times I just had to put the book down and pray or think. Great stuff.

“You're invited to sit at the feet of Jesus Himself and listen—and learn (and yearn)—as He prays. Seventeen chapters share the exciting, empowering, and enlightened Red Letter Prayer Life as Jesus spoke it, lived it, and shared it with His followers. Jesus uncovered secrets of prayer that could make the lame walk, open prison doors, and break down barriers between people. He did it for His followers then, and He does it for you today.

For some time now, it has been burning in my heart to really renew my prayer life. Take it from the rote and new and fresh. After reading The Red Letter Prayer Life, that burning in my heart has only grown brighter and more intense.

In 17 chapters the author, Bob Hostetler, takes you on an unforgettable journey to a more fulfilling prayer life than you ever hoped for or imagined. This is not a book that you will read one time and put it up on the shelf. This is a book that will require a second read and a third study to totally absorb the wisdom the author shares. If you want to go deeper into your prayer life, and then deeper still I can’t recommend this book enough. You will not be disappointed.

What a great premise for a book! I'm not familiar with another book that takes 17 imperatives from Jesus' utterances (hence the title "Red Letter..." - some bibles put the words of Jesus in red letters) and discusses each of them. From "Come" to "Go", the book takes one through much of what a Christian needs to do. It also corrects some common misunderstandings and clarifies some murky interpretations.

There are several chapters I found particularly strong, but the chapter on "Forgive!" is the best treatise on the subject I have ever read. It was both inspirational and transformational. But the book if for no other reason than to read this chapter.

But many of the others come close to the same level, and reading just the one would miss the point. I used the book as a devotional for several months; it is written in such a way that headings happen often, and even as little as a couple of pages at a time is instructive.

I heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in learning what Jesus wanted us to be and do, not just what he wanted us to believe.

The fact that the book is dedicated to me and my older brother is of no bearing on the review. As someone once said (in red letters) "A prophet is without honor in his own country." But while the standard is higher in one's own country I must say that (having read many of Bob's books - but not all of them) this is probably my second favorite. You'll have to read my other reviews of Bob's books to find out which is my favorite.

This is definitely a good read.

The adjectives in the subtitle give us a hint into Bob's message for living as a disciple of Jesus. Bob Hostetler writes with purpose; his message is practical; and his writing is simple so anyone can understand it.

Hostetler has delivered his message in a 'pure' way: truth, grace, simplicity and clarity of thought are all in place. Sure, he uses his knowledge of Greek to explain things. But he only does it to enhance the message. I never got the feeling I was being talked down to because these explanations are not overdone.

The seventeen words Bob chose are excellent choices and indicate his careful study of Jesus' message and mission. From "Come" to "Go," every word inspires us to deeper relationship with Christ and a call to carry out His mission as commanded.

Hostetler has a way of telling stories which not only lend themselves to giving meaning to his message, they often are entertaining and sublime. That's the way Jesus Himself told parables. Overall, his heart and personality shine through. He makes being a Christian sound challenging and enjoyable at the same time. After reading The Red Letter Life, I would like to sit down with the author and simply talk about our respective spiritual journeys.

Bob Hostetler is a pastor, author, and conference speaker. Lately, I read less Christian non-fiction than I used to, choosing to study the Bible more. While there is no substitute for God's Word, there are certainly excellent supplements. This one happens to be one of them and that's why it gets a high rating from me.

I lent this book to my sister and she in turn lent it to her friend after she finished. They both loved the book and said that it helped them to improve on their prayers! My sister now spends more time praying every day and it's been a blessing. I'm planning on reading it myself, but I have to wait until my sister's other friend finishes it (she keeps lending it out because it's that great).

I have heard many preachers say when they read or heard something that was Biblically sound, "That'll preach". I found myself saying that far more often than not as I read this book. Encouraging, reassuring, and challenging.

Simply and clearly written, using 17 words such as "come," "go", "rejoice," "pray," and "repent." This is a good book for the mature Christian as well as the new Christian. It is Biblical and challenges the believer to be all the Lord wants him to be.

Fairly good and practical book. I especially liked the final word challenges at the end of each chapter.
