In the last two years I have had the privilege of reading and reviewing two books written by Dr. Billy Graham – The Reason for My Hope: Salvation and Nearing Home: Life, Faith, and Finishing Well. Judging by the number of reviews on Amazon, I came to the conclusion that they were well-received. But I was shocked by the tepid response to Ruth and Billy Graham: The Legacy of a Couple by Hanspeter Nüeschas which was released as recently as January 7, 2014. It has so far managed just 6 Amazon reviews.
Thank You, Billy Graham: A Tribute to the Life and Ministry of Billy Graham by Jerushah Armfield, Aram Tchividjian and Basyle Tchividjian, Graham’s grandchildren, will undoubtedly be a different case. The forward of the book is written by Michael Reagan, son of Ronald Reagan. The book is unique. It is different. It will also draw a huge readership as a tribute to the man who has preached now for 70 years and has delivered the gospel message to more people face-to-face than anyone in history and has ministered on every continent of the world.
It is meticulously sorted and compiled into different twenty-four chapters, including the foreword and introduction. The chapters are: Thank You, Billy Graham… - for Inspiring My Christian Faith - for Your Spiritual Legacy - for Your Personal Touch on My Life - for the Time I Met You in Person - for the Day I Got Saved - for Reaching Me with Your Books - for Reaching Me with Your Movies - for Setting Such a Good Example - for Your Classic Crusades - for Helping Me Deal with Death - for Helping My Marriage - for Touching My Life When I Was a Child - for How You Explained the Gospel - for Planting Seeds of Faith - for Helping Me Find Jesus - for Bringing Me Back to Jesus - for How You Touched My Family - for Helping Me Deal with Adversity - for Saving My Life - for Everything - for Sharing Ruth with Us
The uniqueness of this new book is that it is for Billy Graham, “America’s Pastor.” In it the authors have painstakingly compiled letters and notes sent to Billy Graham and published it in book form. The letters are written by family members and strangers, people from far and near, from all corners of the globe whose lives have been touched. He has impacted every section of the global society – from the poorest to the richest. The letters are written with love and gratitude, shedding light not only about the senders’ lives but also about Billy Graham and his ministry and how it impacted lives.
In a way the book showcases the magnitude and gigantic nature and reach of Billy Graham and his ministry. It is a testimony of his love and commitment to Jesus Christ whom he has sought to serve for over seventy-long years. Above all, the letters are inspiring. When God works miracles can happen even if it is only through one single person.
There is absolutely no dispute that Billy Graham is a great man of God and one of the greatest evangelists ever to walk the earth. He is considered “America’s Pastor” and he is loved by millions. I have the utmost respect for the man, his beliefs, his ministry, his integrity, his preaching and the way that he lived his life in service to his Lord. Billy Graham has been an amazing preacher that has brought thousands (if not millions) into a relationship with Jesus Christ. His preaching is eloquent and stands the test of time. His messages are still relevant and riveting today.
So, I was eager to read this book and learn more about the man behind the ministry. It’s a collection of thank you notes that were posted on the website ThankYouBilly.com and were compiled into a book by his three grandchildren. The forward of the book was written by Michael Reagan, son of Ronald Reagan, and includes an intimate glimpse into their relationship. This was my favorite part of the book. Since Billy has been a mentor to every President since Truman, traveled the world, and significantly impacted all types of people from world leaders to taxi drivers; I thought there would be some rich stories to tell about this awesome man. However, that is not this book.
This book is a collection of thank you letters to Billy with numerous testimonies of people sharing how he touched their lives and they came to know Jesus. It is organized by topic for how they came to know Jesus Christ (either through his crusades, books, movies, etc.) or how he might have helped them through a particular hardship (adversity, marital problems, dealing with death) or how he either inspired them to develop a relationship, help them find Jesus, brought them back to Jesus, etc.
While some of the notes are interesting, after reading a few they all seem to have a similar theme: he was a great preacher, a man of integrity, his words were powerful and he helped them to come into a relationship with Jesus. Although each letter describes a monumental event, the stories aren’t particularly engaging nor do they paint a deep picture of the man and his ministry…which is what I would find most fascinating. But, this book is a collection of people who are thankful that they have crossed paths with Billy Graham. Certainly, this man’s ministry impacted many and there is much to be thankful for!
A complimentary e-copy of this book was provided to me by NetGalley in exchange for my fair and unbiased review.
I have long been a fan of Rev. Billy Graham as he exemplifies the life of a true Christian evangelist and family man. I have heard many of his televised evangelistic crusades and even saw him in person in Wilmington North Carolina when he appeared one night during his son, Franklin Graham's crusade at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. He spoke briefly and his wife, Ruth, was on stage with him. I have also read several of Dr. Graham's books as well as several of his wife, Ruth's. Their books were inspirational, honest, and encouraging. This is not your typical "book".....it is a compilation of letters and notes left for Dr. Graham on the website: ThankYouBilly.com. Regular folks are encouraged to leave notes of thanks and encouragement to Billy Graham on the website. Three of his grandchildren have taken some of these notes and put them together as a tribute to "Daddy Bill" as they call him. The notes are also honest and encouraging, as people share how Billy's sermons, books, messages, a chance meeting or handshake have helped to shape their lives and for many, been the catalyst to lead them to salvation (being a "born again Christian" as Billy would say). They are heartwarming messages and they have encouraged me as I read them. I hope they will do the same for other readers. 4 Stars as I would have liked to read a brief history of Billy Graham's life and ministry as some readers may be unfamiliar with him. The inclusion of such would have brought my rating to a 5 Star rating. I received a free digital copy of this book from netgalley.com in exchange for my honest review.
I received this book as a giveaway on Goodreads and I'm so glad I did. I found this book to be truly inspirational and makes me want to live my faith in a way as to inspire others as he did. I used this book as a devotional and read a little everyday!
Such a heart-warming and inspiring read of letters and testimonies regarding the influence and impact of "America's Pastor". This is a book that is best savored slowly to truly appreciate. Though its format could be considered far from traditional, this book serves not just as a highlight to the the life and ministry of an incredible man, but also as an encouragement to Christians to live a life of honesty, integrity, and boldness when it comes to living an upright godly life.
