A must for newcomers to networking. Make sure to get the 2nd Edition! The basic concepts needed for a good foundation in network engineering are well explained here by Spurgeon.

This is a great book that will get you up to speed on the basics of Ethernet networking. I used it to supplement my studies during my first networking class gearing up for the CCNA test.
