Shadowbound

Rate this book
Spread throughout the dark corners of our world lies the Shadow World, a society of vampires who feed off the living. In Austin, Texas, one woman must quell the cravings rising within her, as the very fate of the world rests in her hands…

Ever since her Prime, David Solomon, returned from the dead, Miranda Grey has been hungry. The transformation from ordinary vampires into the ultrapowerful children of Persephone has left both Miranda and David craving the taste of death—and their appetites are growing.

Meanwhile, a formerly vague threat from a fringe group of humans has turned into a full-on war. The Order of the Morningstar has devoted itself to eradicating vampires and has begun to assassinate Primes all over the globe.

The Shadow World’s fate depends on the circle of Signets descended from those who subdued Morningstar hundreds of years ago—but if even a single one is killed, the war is almost certainly lost. Now, with the help of a strange new ally, Miranda must put aside her hunger and access long-forgotten magic to save the circle, but time is running out…

Well, I don't even know where to begin with this review. The book is so involved and so many things happened, it's really hard to do a brief recap...so bear with me.

First of all, I just want to say that I enjoyed the book. I think if you have read all the books that by this time, you're pretty invested in the series.

Secondly, the title of this book really should've been "Devenbound" really! And in fact, every since the second book, his character has taken over ~or~ it could just be me but I am really drawn to him and what he's going through. Don't get me wrong, I love Miranda and David but there's just no getting around it that Deven is the star character.

So anyway, if you're current in the series, you know that the Circle is evolving and there are some changes. They are mainly going with the flow but some things have taken a darker turn. Of course, David doesn't have a problem but it takes a bit for Miranda to get used to.

description

Then, there are a lot of problems with the anti vampire group, Morningstar. Someone is creating stronger humans that can actually do damaged to the vampires and they have gotten quite crafty. Let's just say they do some unthinkable damage. Ugh...it kills me to even think about it and as much as I hate that it happened, I also love that DS goes there. I always love it when authors don't play it safe.

And can we just talk about the Elf? Holy moly...Legolas and then some! Nico has definitely taken over my heart and how could he not? What he has done...for love and for whatever he knows will happen in the future? Well, it's hard not to like him.

description

And I'm loving how involved Stella is again. I was really missing her. She has some feelings coming out for a certain someone and it will be interesting to see how that dynamic will play out.

We do get a lot of scenes with the other Primes and Consorts. I really enjoyed their time together at the "event" and at the club after. Naturally, I didn't like some of the things that happened to them but with that came some growth for some of them especially Cora. Wow!

The changes with Miranda are interesting and I have completely no idea where it's going. The scene with the kitten was amazing and I love how she has integrated into their life!

Overall, the book started out slow but as things evolved, it totally reeled me in. I'm not sure why I'm still surprised at all the things that happen and while I may not be happy with some of them, they are definitely intriguing!

Recommendation:

If you're a fan of urban fantasy, I would recommend this series especially if you enjoy stories that don't play by the rules.

One eye slit open and gave her a blurry glare. “Primes aren’t cute,” he said. “We’re the embodiment of darkness. We inspire fear.”

Now both eyes opened, and he grinned. “I like the Batman pair, too.”

“Millionaire genius crime fighter pants. Yep, I know how to pick a gift.”

shadowbound-shadow-world-dianne-sylvanDavid and Miranda don’t know what to expect with their latest transformations. They have more power, more speed, sharper senses, and are harder to kill, but it comes at a cost. They must drink someone to death once every new moon. David sees it as only fair and is okay as long as he feeds from the dregs of society, but Miranda still struggles with taking another’s life.
But all of that is put on the back-burner as Morningstar is getting bolder. They are hunting Signets and using their power to build armies of mindless minions to do their bidding.

But when their latest attack hurts one of David and Miranda’s closest friends, will they have what it takes to pull him from the brink of death?

I found this book had an incredibly slow start, and I really struggled muddling through it all. There isn’t one thing I can really blame this on, all I know is that it was hard for me to keep reading, and I was easily distracted from the book.

But the wedding hooked me, in this book. I felt so incredibly bad for the tragedy that occurred in the wake of such happiness though. My heart bled for the survivor of that union and I did find it a bit cruel that he was forced to endure such heartache. But he’s a character I wouldn’t like to lose in this series! One of my favorites, in fact.

But that ending? It didn’t feel like an ending at all. A sneak peek at what is to come, I guess. But it left the book feeling incomplete.

Most complex plot yet, but action packed. Word of advice, take you time and let it sink in or else you'll be annoyed by the technicalities. I want to reread this book in a couple weeks before return it to the library. Yes, I loved it that much.

Even though I loved nothing more than more of Miranda & David, I loved that it expanded the world of Deven. A deeply disturbed soul making ends meet while dying in the inside. Yet couldn't comprehend that he's loved and held devotion by many. The relationship between him and Miranda was something I'd never expected but it grew on me too.

This was an emotional roller coaster and once it got going, I couldn't stop reading nor crying. Beautiful writing, intricate and complex plot and with characters to die for.

I would actually give this a 3 1/2 star rating, but that dang half star just doesn't work.

Why is this not a 4 or higher for me? As others have noted, this book is so slow. I am not sure what happened- but something made the story drag for me. Maybe there was just so much more foundation laying that needed to be done to continue this book, I don't know for sure. I just know that I was easily able to put this down because nothing was happening for most of it.

Was that the only reason that I didn't give it a higher rating? No, it wasn't. It's fine and dandy for an author to have her beliefs, but I felt like I was being lectured in some places - specifically in regards to homosexuality and marriage. I think the story could have been just fine without having it shoved down my throat what the author's personal beliefs were. This is fiction; it's definitely not reality. If it were, I'd be demanding to know where my own David was. But that's besides the point. I don't like being lectured.

I won't give any spoilers, but dammit, I'm not exactly happy where this series is going. This book made me rather sad- although I did NOT cry in it like I did with the last one. I swear that one had me in tears from page one.

Anyways, would I recommend this to anyone? Yes, I would- but only because I would expect them to have read the first books and would need to know what happened in this one! I definitely do not recommend this book to someone who has never read the previous ones (starting from book one).
If you attempt to read it without having the background story, you are going to be sorely disappointed and would probably not even bother to give this world a try.

Will I read the next installment? Most definitely. I am curious about Miranda and David's world. Plus I'm always up for a new character.

This series has been all over the place, but for me, this book is the worst of them. I almost gave it up a few times while reading, what kept me going was I had hoped it was the last book, that things would be wrapped up. Instead we're left with a sort of cliffhanger. I really didn't like the direction the series as a whole is taking with the "special" circle and the Morningstar as the foe. But worse, was what has been done with Devon. I get why he is beyond pissed, I would be too. But even as I'm mad, I feel sorry for Nico. His whole world has changed, he has changed, and I worry that the choice he made will be held over his head, not a good thing.

I don't know if I'm going to read the next book. Maybe if I can get it from my library and I'm in the mood to read it when it comes.

Alright so while I absolutely LOVE this series I can't say that this was a favorite of mine to read... though that may be because of my mindset when I was reading it and would explain why it took me more then a day to read. There were some surprises along the way I thought and I definitely had a sad when it came to the whole Jonathon thing. It'll be interesting to find out who exactly it was that Stella saw at the end in the next book.

I think I might have finally lost interest in this series. It took me several tries to get in to this one, and then it just dragged. I LOVED the start of the series, and have remained loyal. Maybe this was just off and I will try book 6, but for now, I'm shelving interest.

David and Miranda are learning to cope with being Thirdborn, but there’s new danger. Morningstar has upped their game with a new weapon and Signets are being assassinated all over the world. On top of that, Deven is being seduced by an elf.

The story’s getting a little complicated and the problems come just a little too fast. There should be bit of a break between a victory and another problem. I mostly feel sorry about Johnathan, but the elf’s problems are sad also.

Footnote: 1) In all that time knowing each other Miranda had never been to the Haven of the West? I was sure she had at some point.

Fave scenes: Miranda escaping the car accident, the battle in the barn, Cora’s flame pushing and the kitten.

Closer to a 3.5 than a 3 on this one. I liked it, but yet, I didn't totally like it. I kinda feel like the story line is going off the rails a little. I have this fear that long-running series cannot handle sweeping arcs, and I'm a bit worried about where this one is going. I like how some people are coming into their own. I'm not a big fan of the constant death defying craziness going on -- some comes across as a little too "deus ex machina" for me, literally. Anything else I say is going to lead to spoilers. I'm going to keep going, although now the books get harder to find as the publisher changes.

Dang it

This ended on a massive cliffhanger and there Is no book 6 yet. I read all 5 books in a couple of days. They are that good and now I'll have to wait for the next one. Well, I hate getting involved in an unfinished series but this series is worth it to wait on the next book.

This used to be a must buy series for me. I found the world to be so interesting and the characters were endearing. I was probably one of the few people who didn’t have a fit about the David/Deven betrayal in book 2 because I kind of got it. I’ve continually given the series a solid 4 stars, but I haven’t been as eager to read it as I once was. The reason that the series keeps getting 4 stars is because Dianne Sylvan doesn’t hold any punches. While parts of each book hold the story back, there is always something major that elevates the book up from 3 star status.

The first part of the book really dragged for me and I found myself wanting to skim. The world has changed so much since the first two books and has gotten almost a little too complicated to follow with all the different characters, factions, etc. The characters are what keep me coming back, but at times I wonder why. I often don’t understand their motivations or what they’re thinking. Throughout this book, I still had that same problem, plus everything moved so slowly. There was action, but it all seemed a lot alike.

As she did in the previous books, Dianne made a big move, one that in the past had made me forget all about my problems with the book. This time, the big, sad moment that sort of takes you by surprise, wasn’t that surprising. There were a lot of signs pointing to what was going to happen and while I applaud her ability to kill off important characters, as she has done the majority of this series, I had a difficult time seeing this death as anything more than a way to get the character out of the way. For the majority of the series I’ve felt like this character has gotten the short end of the stick, yet they are one of my favorites. I’m glad that this character at least got some kind of happiness before their demise.

And then of course, to save the life of the dead characters loved one, they had to give that love one a new consort and of course it was someone that the loved one was already attracted to. The way Dianne worked it out, made me feel even more like this all was a convenient excuse to give the loved one someone else to bone. This whole situation bothered me more than the David/Deven betrayal ever could have.

Now that the series is going to be self-published, I don’t know if I’ll be able to continue reading it. I no longer feel like I can buy the series and if I can’t get it from my library, I don’t think I’ll bother. I don’t care about the characters or the story like I used to. Which is sad, but totally happens. I respect what Dianne Sylvan has done and I hope that eventually someday I can finish the series and find out what happens to the Circle, but I won’t be going out of my way to make it happen anymore.

This story revolves around the Morningstar’s crusade to demolish the Shadow World. To fuel their army, Primes and Consorts are being annihalated around the world. Despite the unparalleled strength and power of the newly formed circle of eight (David/ Miranda, Deven/ Jonathan, Jacob/ Cora, Olivia/___ ) they aren’t immune to the destruction around them. If anything, the death of the other primes are just a means to an end with the circle being the primary objective.

Defeating the Morningstar should not have been a great concern but because of Deven’s unwillingness to carry on it becomes a massive issue. The shocking factor is the new species added in to spice up the story. If you’ve read Book 4 you know that Deven is a forth elven. Who else would be better to fix Deven’s problems if not one of his brethren. Here enters Nico…

At first, it was difficult to accept him. I felt highly suspicious of his intentions. Why would an elf leave his peaceful abode to help someone who wasn’t remotely close to him? As the story progressed we find just how elaborate Nico’s involvement really is. And let me tell you - his appearance into the fold was not like anything I would have ever expected. Whatever happens is just unbelievably heartbreaking yet beneficial at the same time.

At first I couldn’t understand why the author decided to take this route but in the end I realize that it was actually brilliant. This is just one thing that I loved about it. It’s unpredictibility – it kept me on my toes and at every turn continued to surprise me. Other factors are, as the series progresses the relationships flourish beautifully. It also doesn’t just concentrate on the one couple but the circle as a whole. These characters evolve into so much more than they ever were and even begin to discover and harnest their newfound skills.

It might be an issue for some but as the storyline moves along it gets more and more complex which I absolutely love. Where in Book 1 just involved vampires and humans now we have a variety of supernaturals working together to achieve one goal.

I have to admit that in the beginning I had issues getting into this story. It might have been because it had been months since reading Book 4 – Of Shadow Born or it could also be attributed to the multitude of characters and POV’s that were introduced at the very start so if that becomes an issue for you I recommend pushing through…everything will come full circle in the end.

I really like this series but after reading the reviews of the next book and thinking about this one, I think I'll probably just stop at this one. The writing and world building are great but I don't understand the point of some developments.
The whole attraction outside of pairs is beginning to bug me. I understand since they're all connected and David and Deven have history. I almost clapped when David said no to Nico despite being interested. With the foreshadowing, I'm expecting Deven and Miranda ended up in bed at some point, possibly a threesome with David. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if this turned into a huge orgy between everyone. But that's not what I love about this series and I have this sickening feeling that, for whatever reason, anytime a character become chummy with anyone else it's going to end up in sex at some point.
Speaking of characters the scenes with Deven recruiting and assigning his newbie are totally random. It's obvious to me where this is going . But nothing happens with that character in this book besides Deven recruits him mentions that he didn't train the guy to fear him like normal then assigns him. That's it.
The biggest reason I won't read the next one though is there is apparently a time gap in which events take place and they are mentioned in the next book but never shown to the reader. I hate that it makes me feel like I've missed a book/something important. I'd rather deal with the sadness of losing a good series then the frustration/anger of that missing feeling.

I can't understand why there isn't more fan interest in this series.

It's thought out, written really well, lots of story details, no irritating typos or repeats. Everything ties up well in the end of each novel and slides you into the next with that wonderful need-to-scratch-itch that is needed to keep a reader interested for the next one.

So much happened in this novel, lots of answers, lots of new ideas to the storyline. I really enjoyed it.

I never really was upset with the loss of Faith.. yeah, I shed a tear at the time I was reading it, but I didn't really miss her since then. The loss in this one however.. Ouch!! Not forgivable!! *blows raspberry at author*

As I have said before in earlier novel reviews there are details in this series that seem to come loosely off other more popular authors which does irritate me. JRWard with the 'Shutters' in the 'Mansions' to keep the light out during the day. SKenyon with the 'Soul Mates' (and a couple others) and RMead with the whole 'Guardians' thing.. but the rest is unique and original enough it has kept me reading. The characters are realistic, with an edge enough to make them un-human and attractive to the reader.

Looking forward to the next.. I hope the authors decides to go past the predicted ("maybe") eight novels and keeps writing. It will be hard to see this series end.

p.s. To: Ace Publishing. Mistake. BIG mistake. YOUR loss!!!!

Shadowbound is book 5 in the Shadow World series. I bought it when it first released, but dare not let myself read it until the next one was available.

Once again, Dianne has a wonderful writing style, and I was sucked back into the world of the characters; finishing the book in a couple of days.

I will admit that some aspects (especially after a couple of years break from Book 4 to now) were confusing in places. The Lore is full of little twists or unexpected undertones, but I feel that as the reader discovers this information at the same pace as the characters, it just makes the character's confusion feel more realistic. I found it helpful that I've read her Agency series, as I didn't need too much description of general concepts that I may have otherwise been a little confused by.

Aside from that, I still feel that the characterisation is solid, I love that she can make me laugh and cry within a few pages, and I particularly read Dianne's books for her great sense of pace. Much like she has done previously, there is a sense of cliff-hanger on one aspect of the story, although not as bad as another book I could mention! I'm glad to already have Book 6 (Shadowstorm) in the series and will definitely turn to that one next time I want a quick but enjoyable read.

I still recommend this series; and am looking forward to seeing how the Lore will come together in the next story.

It was another seemingly unending drama with the Morningstar attacking the vampires. And to me it seemed like that Morningstar did the most damage and there is no end game as it is taking so long to get to the point of all this fighting. You have so much going on that needs to be explained and that was taking forever and with so much detail that I got bored with reading it. I think that's why it took me so long to complete. When I started reading it I was thinking that I need to re-read the previous books just to familiarize myself with what was going on and why Morningstar was attacking the main characters in the book. At this time I feel undecided it I'll move on the next book which will I guess take another year to come out.

I just..... I don't know what to say. I love it, and I am a little miffed at the author for making me love it so much. Its not often you can find a book that can absolutely break your heart as much as this did. I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I just freakin love this series so much. And it's outrageous that the publishers dropped the series. When Dianne Sylvan does come out with the rest of the series I am ready to jump back into that world again. Can't say it enough, but this is, hands down, one of the best series I have ever read, and I read everything. I love ALL the characters that make this story come together, good, evil, and lesser evil. DEFINITELY IN MY TOP FAVES RIGHT NEXT TO PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. LOVE YOU DIANNE SYLVAN!!!!!

A lot of surprises going on here. Definitely a book that kept me on the edge until I finished it. The only thing that bothered me was the whole lot of love floating around. Especially between the West and the South. Everybody just loves everybody to the point of ridiculousness.
The book also ends with a cliffhanger, though not one as bad as the one in Of Shadow Born. Can't wait to see how things progress from here. One thing I can say about Dianne Sylvan is that she is bold. She's not afraid to kill off characters or go into gray areas ethically. And that is refreshing in an author. Even though it might bother some of her readers, and I can see that the series suffered from it, she brings originality and freshness that this genre seriously needed.

But...I don't.....it shouldn't be...but....NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! That is exactly how I felt after reading this book. These guys cannot catch a break. They have gone through so much already, and I have a feeling the worst is still to come. Which considering what HAS happened is saying alot.

I have a love/hate relationship with Ms. Sylvan right now. I mean, I love that she goes there, but at the same time it is so heartbreaking to read. I'm still processing at the moment. I think I will be processing for a LONG time. I cannot wait to read the next installment!

I have been putting off reading Shadowbound because I have heard that very bad things happen. It is time to put on my big girl panties and read this book!

I wish my big girl panties had been lost in the dirty laundry. I do not do spoilers, but very, very bad things happen in Shadowbound. I recommend having a book that makes you happy ready to read when you finish Shadowbound. Sylvan has to be true to her story, but this book is the most wrenching and grief laden in the series. I hope book #6 will be out soon.

Not sure how to respond, I loved the book but if this is the end of the series it sucked. There is no true end and there are too many questions left unanswered at the end of this book, leading you to believe that, it is not the end for these characters. I want more than what this book left, in other words it needs a better finish and not this unfinished feeling you are left with at the end of this book!

Omg! What a wild reading ride... Persephone's circle is changing and Morningstar is on a mission to rid the world of vampires and growing stronger. All the signets are in danger and it's a race to see who will succeed first. David and Miranda are still an awesome super couple but the other primes are also front and center. Such an emotional read with lots of unanswered questions. Thx for another terrific read! Love this series... Cliffhangers and all...

The mark of a good writer. I connected with every character in this novel. I wanted what they wanted, I felt what they felt. My only problem with this installment is the waylay problem all middle series novels seem to have. Some stuff happened, but not anything significant that would conclude anything. Like an elevator ride to the next destination. Can't the author just tie up this story about Morningstar and move on to something else 100 years down the line?

Latest book in the shadow world series by dianne sylvan is just awesome.

I just couldn't believe what happens to a particular character and it was just evil.so cool and have a new/old species join the party and obviously all the drama that'll happen with it.

I feel so much for the characters this book as a hell of a lot of stuff happens to them and to others they know.

give a very solid ********** out of 5 :-)
