A few weeks ago I happened to randomly come across this book in the new section. I had no idea that it would change my life for the better.
For years I've struggled to understand why that no matter how hard I tried, eating was always such a stressful event for me. I couldn't comprehend why certain symptoms would arise and this book put all the pieces together for me. Doctors would always brush my complaints off as nothing and I continued to suffer, making eating a meal hell for me. It never even crossed my mind that the ingredients in food could be the culprits of what was wreaking so much havoc on my body. Since finishing this book, I've learned a TON and discovered I have either an intolerance or allergy to three of the top eight food allergens. I have changed the way I eat completely and any symptoms I've ever had have disappeared... as well as some of my health issues! I can feel my body operating a lot more efficiently, I've lost weight, and overall, I feel like an entirely new person. I have never felt this good in my life. Thank you so much to Maggie Moon for helping me finally find answers and get my life back.
The helpful, interesting and informative part of this book for me was the front few chapters where the author talks about various types of known allergies and lists some common allergens and their effects. E.g. Allergies to milk, peanuts, MSG, food colourings and preservatives, pollen, etc. I found some surprising allergens (histamine for one) and learned more about others (like seafood).
The rest of the book is pretty much common sense, but with useful tips thrown in here and there so you can better plan a diet that will allow you to identify whether any foods in your current diet are unknowingly causing you grief.
As someone who has been plagued with allergies my entire life, this book never really did answer any of my questions, though it did provide me with some insight into the allergic condition in general and the body's response.
Thank you for this book I have learned a lot on how to eat better and why I have so much problems when I have anything with dairy and sugar in my foods. And because of this I have been able to choose foods that would not bother me so much and I have started feeling healthier, I have more energy and with the exercising I have been doing not only have I lost weight but I sleep better at night and I don't have to have an afternoon nap. And some of my allergies seem to be gone. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to not only read and review your book but to put it into action. Ms. Brown
This book had a LOT of information. The recipes and charts included were really helpful! It also had a lot of great strategies for detecting and avoiding foods that may be intolerances, and the charts about nutritional sources were great. I have an egg allergy as well as food problems that the doctors were never able to figure out, so this book was a helpful resource for me.
I liked the book for the information but I have problems with the sample targeted eating plan. The author lists foods, for example butternut squash - apple soup, but no recipes or them. She also includes pesto without a warning that pesto can include Parmesan and/or cashews, both items to be avoided on an elimination diet.
I received this book as part of a promotion. The book is well written and researched. The personal anecdotes were also helpful. Reading the book confirmed for me that I do not have food allergies as described in the book. Although useful, I would not recommend this book as a replacement for medical help.
