The Firedrakes, elite warriors of the Salamanders Space Marine Chapter, enter an ancient space hulk in search of a great prize - a xenos prisoner taken by fellow Salamanders a century before and lost in the warp. Harried by vicious alien genestealers and beset by strange psychic phenomena, the Space Marines struggle to reach their goal, only to find that their mission may be far more difficult than they imagined. Read it because The Salamanders elite warriors, the Firedrakes, search an ancient space hulk for a long-lost prisoner, but encounter a threat that may destroy them all.
I read this as the counterpart to The Core by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, which covers the events from the Night Lords perspective, so I am intrigued if I feel differently when I eventually re-read this as part of Kyme's Tome of Fire series. Both stories appear in the Fear the Alien anthology.
Nu'Mean and his Firedrakes are on a historic mission of vengeance that leads them to a Space Hulk that happens to be hosting a wide variety of dangers, including Genestealers and Night Lords.
I'm in two minds about this one. On one hand the details are great and it's clearly a good 40K short story, though perhaps lacking in its own standing as it relies on a lot of references to previous stories, but on the other hand it's a bit clunky and cumbersome in the dialogue and prose, especially when being directly compared to ADB's near perfect Night Lords Series.
It's definitely good, but I don't know if it's great.
It seems that some of the best stories told about the WH40K-universe are short stories. This book is full of terror, action and suspence. I have no idea why there is an ork on the cover, as the book has no orks in it.
This tells an interesting story of one short mission of the Salamanders space marine chapter. It nicely fills the gap between the books Salamander and Firedrake.
There is not much more to say. I like Kyme's short stories, even better than his longer ones, that are good books also.
