This is one of those few books that pushed me deep into contemplation mode. After reading this book, the question that terribly badgered my intellect was, What is the similarity between the writings of Virginia Woolf, Nanditha, Sylvia Plath, and Rajalakshmi?

I am getting the same vibes while reading their books. The underlying melancholy, depression, loneliness, approach towards society, and relationships are enmeshed together to make a complicated loop that I was never able to disentangle to decode it. This is one of the best story collections I have read in my life. If you are a fan of Plath or Woolf, you should never miss the opportunity to read this book. This is an example of fiction at its best.

Why would a writer who was famous and contemporary commit suicide in 1965? You go through these stories and you will probably get an idea.

Each one of these stories has the stamp of helplessness of a kid whose friends have deserted her. The loneliness of every protagonist in these stories, are of the author's.

And, mind you, none of these stories are the one's which will make you cry. But you feel the helplessness, the loneliness, the struggle.

The Daughter in 'Makal', the teacher who got insulted by a student in 'Maappu', the girl who wanted to send hand made kerchiefs to her brothers male teacher, all in the end are lonely.

Rajalakshmi was born in 1930 & died in 1965. She wrote some top class stories in her prime. If she were alive, she probably would have been one of the greatest Malayalam story writer ever born. It is a shame that we were deprived of her stories. Whatever be the reason!
