A new trinity for our time. We are members of a one-earth society, and caring for the earth and soul is interrelated! This is the message of Satish Kumar, the internationally-respected peace and environment activist who has been gently setting the agenda for change for over 50 years. In Soil, Soul & Society, Satish presents the new trinity for our age of sustainability. One that shares the knowledge that we ourselves are very much part of nature; that what we do to nature we in fact do to ourselves; and that the earth is soulful. In this book, he urges readers to create a new consciousness that reveres nature and explores how as a global society we need to embrace diversity and become pilgrims on this earth not tourists. To bring about change in the world we must be the change we wish to see.
Satish Kumar is an Indian, currently living in England, who has been a Jain monk and a nuclear disarmament advocate, and is the current editor of the magazine Resurgence, founder and Director of Programmes of the Schumacher College international centre for ecological studies and of The Small School. His most notable accomplishment is a "peace walk" with a companion to the capitals of four of the nuclear-armed countries-- Washington, London, Paris and Moscow-- a trip of over 8,000 miles. He insists that reverence for nature should be at the heart of every political and social debate. Defending criticism that his goals are unrealistic, he has said, "Look at what realists have done for us. They have led us to war and climate change, poverty on an unimaginable scale, and wholesale ecological destruction. Half of humanity goes to bed hungry because of all the realistic leaders in the world. I tell people who call me 'unrealistic' to show me what their realism has done. Realism is an outdated, overplayed and wholly exaggerated concept."
This book is essential to all humankind. It helps us to realize, sense and connect with our primitive souls, our relationship and impact to the environment, society and communities, and our daily search and evolving for purpose. Pleasure and enriching reading, a book to be read and meditated many times.
Reading Satish’s words feels like breathing deeply in an old forest. He incorporates poems, stories, mantra, and lived philosophies to present an alternative vision of reconnecting with one’s self, nature and people—Soil, Soul, Society. Wisdom and compassion overflow in his holistic solutions to the environmental, social and spiritual crises of today. I hope in whatever small ways, his wisdom and vision can leave a mark on my daily practice.
Superb. Should be compulsory reading for any politician, worldwide, who pays lip service to the need to care for our world, and all the wildlife upon it, including us. A perfect, beautifully written, distillation of the author's ideas as to how we can all make a difference, along with accounts of earlier philosophers and ecologists thinking.
Superb, I agree with all the other comments ~ wonderful lead up to our Extinction Rebellion Forest of Dean talk on "Heading for Extinction and What To Do About It" Really thought provoking. Recommended.
In an era of grassroots change, the top of the pyramid is too far away from where the action is to make much of a difference. It takes too long and it lacks impact. The top isn’t the top anymore because the streets are where the action is.
Inspirational journey through the possibility of ecological change as the world becomes more aware of the reality of damage being done. Soil so important to maintain as the basis of growth, community and reference to small is beautiful, the book we became dependent on.
This was a very unexpected read. Despite our different religious or spiritual beliefs, we should all embrace the principles of the soil, soul and society. It challenges just about everything about western society and its culture.
Really enjoyed this. While I think a lot of the sentiment wasn't necessarily surprising for me, there is so much wisdom and truth explored in these words.
Not my most felicitous sentence. However the meaning is clear. This is a wonderful advocation of a certain way of life , a certain moral code which I affirm.
The link between the 3 words of the title is clear. Each should be nurtured. And equality of the 3. The soil is our lifeblood. We should carry our love for the soil with us into the other 2.
The soil contains our future. No soil. No life .
Look after the soil. Soil contains nature. Nature is us. Blimey I’m sounding like a hippy.
