A life changing event for me occurred at my college graduation in May of 2003.
National bestselling author, Karen E. Quinones Miller, was the keynote speaker. She delivered a speech about how she had written a book, self-published it and sold so many copies on her own that major publishing houses fought to offer her a deal. I sat amongst my graduating class fully alert and attentive. It was as if Karen was talking directly to me, telling me to bypass trying to get a job in advertising copywriting and follow my true passion of becoming an author.
I was unquestionably inspired and two months after graduation I began writing my first novel, Secret Society. Three months later I had a complete manuscript and was ready to move on to the next step.

I conjured up the nerve to email Karen and let her know that she had motivated me to pursue my goals of being a writer and that I had completed my first book. I asked her for tips on self-publishing. She simply told me to let self-publishing be my last resort and that I should first seek a publishing deal. I took her advice and researched the ways to go about submitting a manuscript. I sent a query letter, a synopsis, and the first three chapters of my book to Teri Woods Publishing. Teri Woods was known for publishing urban novels and thus I figured she would be interested in Secret Society. Teri Woods was not only interested, but wanted to buy my book outright and on top of that offer me a five-book deal. I was astonished. The only thing I had to do was write a second book to prove to Teri that I could produce.

I wrote Diary of a Mistress and shortly thereafter I was poised to go to New York to sign a deal with Teri Woods. I was excited and anxious, yet nervous. I was new to the publishing industry and I wasn't sure what the contract should look like, what type of deal was appropriate and most of all if selling my book outright was a smart thing to do. Once again, I conjured up the nerve to email Karen. That time she responded by telling me to call her and her telephone number was in the body of the email. She advised me not to sell my book outright and that I needed someone knowledgeable to attend the meeting with me. After realizing that her own schedule wouldn't permit her to accompany me, she took a chance and asked her agent to do so. Liza Dawson, Karen's agent, agreed to read my manuscripts over the weekend and let me know Monday whether or not she would be willing to represent me. I immediately emailed both manuscripts to Karen and Liza.

The next day I got a call from Liza telling me how good of a writer I was and offering to be my agent. I accepted and the next thing I knew, I had three major publishing houses interested in signing me. Teri Woods was notified of this and was asked for her bid. By Monday, an auction was held. Simon and Schuster was the highest bidder offering a six-figure advance and a two-book deal far exceeding my expectations as a new, unpublished author. I was in awe. Everything that has happened from then on has been a joyride. I am living my dreams and it is with thanks to Karen E. Quinones Miller. I often wonder what I would be doing or where I would be had it not been for Karen's speech those few years ago. There's no telling. But I know for sure that I am grateful that she told her story because it was truly the beginning of the success I enjoy today. Now, I feel it is my obligation to pass it on.

I am available to do speaking engagements and motivational talks at community centers, schools, group homes, prisons, outreach programs, shelters, etc. My goal is to reach as many people as I can and make a difference in the lives of others. I firmly believe To whom much is given, much is expected and indeed I have been given much.

This was my 3rd novel...My most critically acclaimed....Raw, Real, and Tragic, it's Modern Day Shakespeare...

I wrote this one when I was only 14 in 9th grade. But as you can see it didn't get published until after I graduated college. The thing is, when I sat down to write my first novel, this one was going to be it. Since I had already had a foundation. All I needed to do was update it. But every time I sat at the computer I found myself stuck...Writer's Block... So after a few weeks I decided not to rewrite the book and instead I started a new one from scratch (Secret Society). All I did was take the main character's name which was Celess from Mommy's Angel which was originally titled Motherly Love, and gave that name to the main character in Secret Society.

A couple years and 2 books later, I came back to Motherly Love. I was finally able to rewrite the book. I made the main character's name Angel and changed the title to Mommy's Angel. And of course I fleshed it out, updated it, and being as though I had more experience as an author I was able to make it 100 times better than it was back in 9th grade.

My fans and readers loved it! In fact, it became my first book to make the Essence Best Seller's List! I guess it was worth coming back to...

Bad writing. It's just that simple. The plot eventually bored me. The concept of motherly love that Miasha explores in this novel is absurd. After reading about mother love from Toni Morrison, I found myself disgusted by Miasha's attempt to produce the story of a broken child. The plot was completely unrealistic. The characters were hard to believe as well. The characters were poorly developed. The situation between Antione (or Antoine as it read on the back of the novel), Angel, and Angel's mother, Carmina just flopped. It was a critical part of the story and was supposed to explain Angel's trials with her mother, Shake, and Butter, but Miasha chose to reveal this connection in the last 15 to 20 pages of the novella. Why? This isn't the first Miasha story I've read, but it is certainly the last.

I am really disappointed in this book, especially that crazy and disheveled ending. I don't want to give the book away but there really isn't too much else to say about it. Typical urban book, troubled youth, crack head parents, teenage pregnancy and rape, etc. etc. Nothing new or exciting. Then comes a rushed ending that makes absolutely no sense and made me feel like I had wasted my time reading the book.

OMG! What a ending! Breath taking. A mothers love goes without words. What a mother will and want do for her children could leave you speechless. To mothers read this book and remember to lead your children by setting good examples for them. Awesome!!!!!

The ending was not what I was prepared for!!!…This book was full of tragedy which many young girls endure at the hands of the mothers!!!…
Angel was never safe with her and neither was her other siblings, especially Curtis!!!…
This was a heavy read!!!…

This book was a short but great read. Once the book started it immediately had crazy situations happening. It was sad what the 15 year old had to go through throughout the whole story.

One of my favorite books is Mommy’s Angel by Miasha. It’s about a fifteen-year-old girl name Angel, and her family crumbles into pieces after the tragic death of her older brother Curtis, who was the caretaker of the family. Angel has to take on the responsibility of her younger brother and sister, but she’s too young to get a legal job, so she turns to her brother best friend Antoine and he gets her a job at a strip club, which later leads to her prostituting. Her mother Carmina turns to heroin to ease her pain, but she doesn’t realize that her boyfriend Marvin is molesting her fifteen-year-old daughter.

It was a nice Sunny day in the street of N.Y.C and everyone on the block was outside. Then, Angel got real excited when she saw her oldest brother black mustang speeding down the street. She just knew when he stopped he was going to give her some money because he gave his younger siblings and mother anything they wanted. Then, her intuitions were crushed when she heard hundreds of gunshots coming from a car tailgating her brother car and then a loud “Boom”. Curtis car was smashed up against two other cars on the block. Carmina became very depressed after the tragic death of Curtis and that’s when her whole world turned around.

Since the tragic death of Angel oldest brother Curtis her mother “doesn’t notice that her son has no food or that her daughters clothes are torn and dirty”-Overview of Mommy’s Angel. Angel is very desperate to support her younger sibling, and she hit the streets looking for anything or anyone for help, and her brother best friend Antoine comes to mind and he gets her a job in the striping business. Angel is new to this business so the girls at the strip club puts ecstasy pills in her drink, so she feel at ease, and she buy food for the house and clothes for her siblings to put on their backs. Then, her mother starts to wonder where angel is getting all this money from, and she steals about $1500 from angel that she was saving up.

In the mist of angel prostituting her mother boyfriend Marvin was molested her. Then she got pregnant, but at the time she has a boyfriend name Jamal that she is having sexual intercourse with. So, this lady that she was prostituting with took her in and took her to all her prenatal appointments, and when she had the baby it looked just like her mom boyfriend Marvin. Everybody in the room was shocked, and her mother still didn’t believe her when she told her that Marvin raped her and this was his baby.

In conclusion, Angel mother became a heroin addict after her oldest son Curtis was gunned down in the streets of New York City. Angel who is fifteen-years-old has to take care of her Siblings and her newborn baby, by her mother boyfriend. Also, her mother Carmina turns to heroin to ease her stress and pain. So, if u want to know how the story ends then I suggest you read it, but I’m going to tell you one thing it ends in another tragic story.

Told in the voice of a struggling steadfast 15 year-old, Angel, who hails from the thorny streets of Brooklyn, Miasha's Mommy's Angel will pull readers in by their heart strings. The pure desire to know if little Angel makes it out and wises up in time will keep you turning the pages. Written in a very accessible, and believable tone, the words of Mommy's Angel are easy to digest, making it a simple read for any afternoon. Although some pieces of the story seem a little forced or rushed, the twists will all come as surprises. Overall a nice third effort by Miasha.

1. What did you like best about this book?
I liked that the story was a real easy to read. It didn't take much analyzing or thinking to get the author's point.

2. What did you dislike about this book?
I didn't like that some of the twists thrown in seemed to pop up with out any hinting, but I guess that's why its called a twist right?

3. How can the author improve this book?
I would stretch the story out a little more, by adding more depth to the surprises presented in the last 20 or 30 pages.

"Mommy's Angel is a fast-paced, well-written, realistic view of what addiction does to our communities. It sheds a bright light on how the addict's hurt, pain, and trouble are recycled onto the people closest to them."

I expected a different ending but still enjoyed the read. It's centered around the main character Angel who experiences one hardship after another once her brother Curtis is killed. Angel and her family went from having the best of everything, to basically hitting rock bottom. Her mother Carmina took things the hardest and it was clear once her wrongdoings were revealed towards the end. I liked Jamal and Angel really messed things up with him. She should've kept it real with him about everything because he was the one that truly did love her and had her back no matter what. Marvin was one sick dude and Carmina was too high to even be a mother and help her daughters. Naja was a tad too grown for her own good. Now Butter was just as trifling and I was hoping Angel would give her the beat down of her life. Learning about Antoine's role in everything was a shocker and learning what Carmina did was just as surprising. Angel really couldn't catch a break and turned to drugs to make her pain go away. Carmina could've kept her final act to herself because even though she thought she was helping, that didn't really show her finally wanting to step up to be the mother she'd neglected to be for so long.

I finally got to read this book. Very quick book that I read in one day.

Love this book.
Book was about Angel and her family. Her brother Curtis got killed and after that her lift was flipped upside down.
Curtis was the one that was keeping the household together when it came to food, clothes and taking care of there mom.

But, shortly after her got killed Angel mom turned to drugs and didn't really care about her kids. Angel started getting rapped by her moms boyfriend Mavin.
Angel started stripping to buy herself, her sister and brother food and clothes. She took care of them the best she could.
The stripped lead her to lie to her boyfriend Jamal when he found out he went off on her and dumped her. Angel end up locked up for a day. Then she try to become a escort but, she didn't want to do that. She finds out she is pregnant.
After her house was burned down her mom ends up in a womans shelter with her brother and sister. Mavin ends up locked up. Her mom gets clean from the drugs. Angel thinks all will be well until she found out some more stuff about her mom.

Great book overall. Hate how it ended it was so sad how it ended but, great book.

The Book mainly revolves around one character, Angel who goes through things as little as getting a C at school to becoming a prostitute just to keep money in her pocket. Each chapter in the book talks about her problems specifically and show her going down hill page by page. The other characters who go through out the book include her boyfriend, her older brother who she used to look up to before he got killed, Curtis, her little sister Naja, and her drug-head mother. The themes of the story are all set when you read the title of the chapter; all about what is going on in her life at the very moment. After reading this book it connects with a Medea play that I have seen where the mother is a drug addict, and leaves her children to raise them selfs. But the ending in the play was more happy than the one in the book. Overall I can say that the book was great because of the cliff-hangers and also how straight to the point it was about everything.

I loved this book. It's about a girl having to find her own way to live because her only guardian that really took care of her was her oldest brother but he died from a drive-by. Her mother was a drug addict who didn't provide for her little brother or sister. All her mother really cared for was her boyfriend who was also a drug addict that raped her and tried to rape her little sister. They both were scared to tell their mother because they thought she wouldn't care. The girl also had a boyfriend who she loved to death but his mother could care less about them being together. Finally the girl got pregnant to whom she thought was her boyfriend's child which was incorrect. The baby was the child of her stepfather's.

"Mommy's Angel" by Miasha is a classic example of a young lady's life going very wrong. The main character was practically born into a disfunctional family, and the situation only gets worse when her mother's boyfriend moves in, and leaves her with a friend of her own.
And, like most young women with no sound direction, she goes out and does whatever she had to do to survive and make it. Unfortunately, the choices that she makes leads her down the wrong path and eventually to destruction.
All in all, I give this book 3 stars because it did keep me interested where I wanted to find out more...I just wish it wasn't so depressing.

Just finished reading Mommy's Angel and omg a excellent read. I like the fact that it not the usual cracked mother and she find's a rich hustler man to help bring her up book. Angel goes through alot from her brother dying by the help of her mother to having to look after her brother and sister at a young age to being sexual abused by her crack head mother's man. When she thinks thing will start to get better everything goes down hill again. Sad ending. I wish that a bit would have got included to say what happened to Curtis Jamal.

WHOA...is all I can say to describe this book. The ride was wild. I thought it was going to be the usual growing up with crack head mother selling herself to the streets to make money urban lit story. It was SO much more than that. The ending blew my mind to the point where I had to read it again to make sure.

this book definitely brings a wow factor. The straight forward in your face attitude is like wow! The ending caught me off guard but i think it was a great way to end in a different kind of way. The way she tells her life, brings you to live it with her.

This novel is 110% drama. I feel so sorry for the main character Angel. She just can't catch a break. This book is very sad, has a few expected and one or two unexpected twists but all in all it is very disappointing. It wasn't horrible but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
