Sergei Alexeyev's RUSSIAN HISTORY IN TALES has the People of Russia as its leading character and tells the story of their centuries-long progress towards freedom. Their road took them up to the present day through struggle with their oppressors and fierce battles with foreign invaders. Each historical stage produced its own heroes.
Sergei Petrovich Alekseev (Russian: Сергей Петрович Алексеев) ws a Russian Soviet writer. Laureate of the USSR State Prize (1984).
Alekseev entered literary and social life first as an editor and critic, and then as a writer. Since 1946 - editor of the publishing house "Children's Literature", since 1950 - Executive Secretary, later - Chairman of the Commission on Children's Literature of the USSR Writers' Union, author of articles on the development of literature for children. In 1965-1996 - editor-in-chief of the magazine "Children's Literature".
Alekseev's first book was “History of the USSR. An educational book for the 4th grade "(1955). For forty years of work in literature, he created more than 30 original books devoted to the history of Russia over four centuries: from the middle of the 16th to the middle of the 20th centuries. Alekseev's books are widely known not only in our country, but also abroad; his works were published in 50 languages of the peoples of the world.
I read this book in my childhood. More than the tales I liked the lithographs and paintings of the book. As a child I did not know the difference between propaganda and real history. The propaganda is evident in every tale in the book starting with the story of Stepan Timofeyevich Razin who led a major uprising against the nobility and tsarist bureaucracy in southern Russia in 1670–1671. Only stories of the people that are in line with Marxist view are picked up and narrated in the book. Exceptions are the tales of Peter the Great, General Suvorov and the Great Patriotic War ( World War-II).
The author of the book carefully avoided talking about Stalin, and Czar in great detail. For that matter there is not a single picture of Czar's family nor there is any mention of Soviet occupation of Poland. All in all, the author did a good job in creating a grand narrative of role of Soviet Union and the acts of many unsung hero's of soviet union who sacrificed their lives in service of their country throughout the existence of Russia and Soviet Union.
Considering how much Soviet propaganda there is in this book, I was surprised by how historically accurate this actually is (especially around WWII where the stories really line up with real events - there are even military tactics described that are known to really have been used by the Soviets, even if they are being treated a bit uncritically).
I read this book in my childhood and loved it. Is it possible to get it now in any form (pdf or hard copy) anywhere? If anybody can help me get it please feel free to contact me at viveku@gmail.com. Thanks!
When my sister bought this book for me I didn't read it for like a year as I was only 14 then. But once I read it, I read it again and again. The book i got was in Hindi and it was hardbound with colored pictures and pages. It was the most beautiful book I had. The tales were captivating. One of the best books written about history in such an entertaining way. Unfortunately, I never got it back from someone who had borrowed it from my mother.:( I want to read this book again so bad.
This book was a gift from a Russian goddess that was my neighbor when I was a kid. I don't know how many times I read it. Awesome short stories about very brave people with an evident touch of madness. Must be the unforgiving weather. Recommended for kids 10+. I'm trying to find a copy of the same edition I had.
