A very good book for the absolute beginner. If you know absolutely nothing about this subject or you have no idea where to start, this is a good resource. Lots of great tips and a nice set of appendices including internet sources for further reading. Of special note is the chapter on all the various hiding places in a house where you can store food, and converting a few example recipes from fresh ingredients to shelf-stable ones. The author is also sympathetic to all personal circumstances and does not present a lot of hugely expensive ideas that would be way out of reach for most people. However, there’s no information about curing meats, pickling, or fermenting. I was hoping to learn about how to build a cold storage room in my house, but alas. Some of the chapters barely scratch the surface of their subject (the chapter on livestock is so lightweight as to be laughable, but at least it’s a start). Anyway if you’re in any respect a prepper, this one should be in your library.
(This has been very resourceful putting together my self-prepardness plan)
Food Storage is something I have been meaning to start for a long time. It is what motivated me to start a garden. With our area prone to wildfires, earthquakes, and power outages, it would be helpful to be more prepared should we ever need to evacuate or be hunkered down for a long period of time.
Many different forms of food storage are covered in this book with pros and cons listed for each. A must read for anyone who is considering long term food storage.
A good overall manual. I like that it includes not just food storage and water but long term solutions (i.e. homesteading ideas). Most of this stuff was a review for me, as I have done much research on this topic, but she did have a few ideas that I found really helpful and plan to implement. This would be a very good read for someone who is interested in food storage and either hasn't started yet or has a basic knowlege and wants to know where to go from there.
Excellent reference for building food storage for emergencies. Very well researched with lots of information on storing food and water, preserving food, rotating supplies, etc.
