Leading knitwear designer Debbie Bliss returns with a complete course in knitting, taking you lesson by lesson through all the techniques and stitches. The book features 15 specially designed projects to practice new skills, and extensive stitch library, and 350 color photos and illustrations, plus charts.
I came across this book after learning a little bit about casting on from a knitting group and YouTube. The illustrations and directions in this book were just what I needed to feel confident trying out new skills. All of it made knitting seem very accessible. Beginners can use this book to build a good foundation, and progress along with the chapters. To be honest, I didn't make any of the clothing projects in the book as they seem a little outdated. However, I have used the pages of motif ideas and I appreciate that there are a variety of traditional and modern motifs with charts.
This is the first knitting book I ever bought. I taught myself how to knit from this book. I think the techniques presented in the book are clear and easy to follow and they start at the very beginning and go to pretty advanced. The patterns are cute and varied, different things for kids, adults, and the home. I made two purses, a kid's hat, and half of a pillow (LOL) from this book. I really recommend this book to those who are looking to learn how to knit!
I borrowed this from our library and enjoyed it. I haven't made any of the projects, but knitted several swatches using new-to-me stitches from the various sections. I liked her "yes you can" approach...the second project (and they are arranged by difficulty) is a very simple children's sweater! I may have to check it out again and try it out. I found it helpful to hear the basics of knitting again in another person's voice.
I've tried several times to learn how to knit, once with my grandmother, once with a friend, neither of those worked out, I never managed to get further than a small swatch. I picked up this book and the third time was a charm. I am up and knitting. So far I've only done basic stitches and double rib, but I've made a scarf and wrist warmers.
A useful, but somewhat dated, complete step-by-step compendium of knitting techniques. Ranges from very beginning (how to cast on, knit stitches, etc) to Aran, Fair Isle, and Design workshops. I want to work through the lace section, since I have issues with lace knitting.
doesn't seem like it's TRULY for beginners, as I have had a lot of questions. There is a lot she takes for granted, though I really like the patterns. In fact, my very first project is from this book.
You cannot pick up this book and some yarn and needles and learn how to knit. The knitting projects have a language of their own and you must be steeped in knitting acronyms to figure them out.
A good basic guide. I like the way Bliss explains things and that it covers quite complicated techniques like entrelac and fair isle. Some nice patterns too
