The Void Core

The Stars Were Never Meant For Us

2159 AD. It is a good time to be alive. The nations of Earth still exist, but they have become more civilized, and humanity has expanded into the rest of our solar system. But, alas, it is not to be our time. Something approaches, a thing on an orbit from far away. Seemingly a mysterious shard of dark matter, this object is known in obscure prophecy as the Chthonian Star. It is awakening things long thought lost or dead, things that have slumbered awaiting its return. The Unified World Council sends out special teams of sanctioned Wardens, whose job it is to ascertain the new threats to human life, to learn everything they can about them, and fight them wherever they are found.

The Void is an original Lovecraftian hard sci-fi horror setting.

Can't fault the pwyw price, read it when looking at alternatives to Traveller/Hostile. Writing is inconsistent in terms of both quality and tone, perhaps reflecting the multiple authors. Some of it is simply juvenile (for example the unnecessarily disrespectful and comical labelling of degrees of mental illness as "bonkers" and "looney") and mechanically it's a bit overwrought (too many skills in some areas like Engineering, too few in other overpowered areas like Defence and Reaction). As a book it needs a strong edit and as a game would need a fair amount of modification.

Phenomenal value for a Pay What You Want-eBook. Light ruleset, probably too light, and an interesting setting that will need some work to be useful. As it is, it could be fun for a little while, but would soon see its limits without some extensive add-ons.

Fantastic layout and art. Clear concise writing. The setting background seems flat and poorly developed.
