I'm so glad we get more of this series! I loved it upon my first read, and have fallen even more in love while watching the anime. This focuses mostly on Hisashi and Mao again as they struggle with similar fears but find strength in each other. They're young and they're still figuring it out, but they both have an eye on the future, and I love seeing them choose each other over and over again.
This is one of my all-time favorite BL series. That said, as much as I love the first volume, the story is insular. With its strong focus on romance, we never get to learn much about Hisashi or Mao as individuals. This time around, Jyanome fixes that. Not only do both leads have their own arcs, their growth pushes the romance forward. That's exactly the sort of storytelling I love in a BL. On top of that, the story delves into their friendships with other people. It makes these characters and their dynamics with one another much richer and more compelling. Not gonna lie, I'm so bitter that the anime adaptation ends right before this volume. This is literally the best one yet.
Truth is, I wasn't super rushing to read the latest volume, because Mao/Hisashi hasn't been my favorite couple. I like them, but I love the two spinoff couples and felt kind of disappointed to swing back around to the "main" couple of the series. But they were perfection this time around.
It helped, of course, that Ichikawa is still a major presence in the film club, with tons of literally laugh out loud hilarious moments, plus some really good heartfelt stuff, too. Loved how much more of a focus there was on his friendship with Mao, including some flashbacks to their first encounter in junior high...I hadn't realized they were so close? I guess I'd thought Ichikawa was better friends with the twins, but Mao's the one he has history with, fights with, and has heart-to-heart talks with. That was great. It adds a lot of depth to both of them.
Also, bonus points for the Kikuchihara scenes and the quick appearances of Rei and Shion. Would always love to see more of them, but the heart of this storyline really was Mao and Hisashi getting past the first excitement of dating, and dealing with all the real life problems they'll have to keep facing together.
Mao, I think, has been my biggest struggle in the series, since I haven't always loved some of his decision-making. That scene with him while Hisashi was sleeping was kind of what I mean - he just seems...selfish, in a way? Insensitive and not particularly in tune with other people's feelings, which turns out to actually be intentional, and something he's actively trying to be better about.
He and Hisashi are both struggling with the same issue: each of them is having major problems with their club activities and the responsibilities they're saddled with, but they're too afraid of looking like a weak loser to talk to each other about it. The thing is, Hisashi's hits a lot harder, because his stakes are way higher.
Mao, quite honestly, would be okay if they broke up. He'd be heartbroken. He'd always carry the memory of his first love with him (and put it into movies). But he'd recover, because he has an entire world outside of Hisashi - his friends, the film club, his huge loving family. And that's what Hisashi means when he "jokes" about still needing to work harder to keep Mao's attention focused on him.
He is absolutely, completely terrified at the thought of Mao getting tired of him and leaving him, like everyone else in his life has done.
That "dream sequence" with Hisashi followed by a stage spotlight as he monologues about how he's afraid of losing Mao...that was stunning. It's a shame the anime ended before this sequel, because that was downright cinematic. Honestly, everything in this volume was absolutely beautifully composed. It's such a pleasure to read and to look at. Really a top favorite series of mine at this point.
There's a little bit of a cliffhanger ending, with Mao fully convinced that Hisashi will agree to go meet his whole family over Christmas. I hope that doesn't turn into anything too dramatic, or derail Hisashi's opening night with the play. But I'm not really worried about any of the couples. They're doing such a good job of at least trying to talk to each other, and I love seeing their journey.
(I do, though, want to see what happens with Ichikawa and Kikuchihara after Kikuchihara graduates.)
I really liked this one!! The last 20-30 pages had me constantly smiling. I’m glad that Mao and Hisashi were able to open up about their insecurities, both to each other and to their friends. I’m nervous about what Hisashi’s answer will be to Mao’s question at the end!!! Another series with a Spring 2025 release date for the next volume, UGH. I want it now 😭
Are you looking for a heartwarming school drama that has spice, drama and fluff in one convenient package? Twilight out of focus might suit your needs! Not to mention it’s set in a delightful theater club you won’t be able to get enough of.
Continue Mao’s and Hisashi’s journey. Twilight Out of Focus is a heartwarming school drama centered around a theater club. Its strengths lie in character development and its emotional depth. This has to be my favorite volume of this series so far. The characters’ communication and inner monologues were beautifully written, and I really appreciated the character development and arcs they went through.
I highly praise Twilight Out of Focus for balancing drama with a strong center. While I could predict some plot points due to foreshadowing, the story still managed to surprise me. That’s one of the things I love about this story—it keeps you guessing. Although the series addresses dark topics, it primarily focuses on healing from our pasts and the importance of friends and sometimes, family. I absolutely loved this volume and I can’t wait for the next one to get some answers!
Who is this manga for This series has an anime, so it’s perfect for newcomers and veterans alike! If you want something to enjoy a manga and an anime with, this is one of the strongest BLs out there to try. It’s mostly a green-light high school romance and it’s an ongoing series, so it’s perfect if you want a series to collect as it comes out. Manga fans of a fairly lighthearted story with a sprinkling of spice and some deeper moments will likely enjoy this story.
i absolutely love this series. after watching the anime, i knew that i needed to pick up the manga and i am so glad that i did. if sasaki and miyano are my little biscuits, then mao and hisashi are my crumpets 💖
for me, the fifth volume didn’t have the same umph as the first four, partly because both mao and hisashi are dealing with certain insecurities that feel as if…they should have already gone through for being as passionate about one another as they are…that’s only my opinion though (which can be very wrong). but overall, i enjoyed this body of work and i eagerly await for the sixth volume to be released (so glad i preordered haha).
Definitely very cute. Better than their first volume. The only downside is that this author sometimes tends to push the boundaries between consensual and nc in at least one intimacy scene in each manga and it’s really frustrating. It’s just unsettling and we can do it without it. Overall though, the characters are loveable and the story has began to grow more in intensity, which is nice. We got left on a cliffhanger 😭 patiently waiting for volume 6
Molt a favorrr ❤️❤️❤️
YUUUUPP. Ugh, I am obsessed with Hisashi. He is so romantic and sweet and emotional and precious. LOVE HIM SO MUCH. And Mao is also so precious, if not aggressive lmao.
I am so happy that we're getting to know all of these characters so deeply. The structure of this series is so refreshing and fun.
I'm so glad we get more of this series as I fallen even more love watching the anime. This volume focuses on the main couple again as they struggle with similar fears but find strength in each other.
I think this is my fav one out of the whole series so far and I can't wait for part 2. We finally get a more in-depth look at Mao and Hisashi! I haven't caught up on the anime yet, but I really hope we get to see this!!
Veremos.
Art is lovely. The story continues to be okay to me. It doesn't really pull me in the way this seems to resonate with others. I think I will finish part 2 and not continue this series if there is more.
Ughhhhh 😭😭😭 I love these babies. This story is so raw and real. I love them. Their anxieties about the future kinda hit hard too. I just want to protect them forever.
