Arena, denied her final confrontation with Kevin, has agreed to go back to her grandfather's house On top of this, the students have just received word that the Special Train will be closed for good Everything comes to an explosive conclusion in the final volume of Train+Train
Train + Train has ended, and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
On the back of the book, it says this is the "explosive conclusion," and while I liked the final chapter, I wouldn't call this volume explosive.
So, Arena pretty much loses the will to live and goes back home to her grandfather, who has plans to marry her off (not really a spoiler, since the cover depicts her in a wedding dress). Reiichi has a final character growth spurt and does something you wouldn't expect, then exactly what you would expect. I'm reminded of a couple of other anime and movies with the final few scenes, but it's a trope that works, and this one has its own take on it as they always do.
So a little cheesy, a little drawn out, but it works. Satisfying? Maybe. Explosive? not particularly.
I have a distinct memory of picking up this series from my local library many years ago. I didn’t remember a thing about it other than the train setting, and I don’t even know if I read all six volumes back then.
So I picked up those exact same copies from the exact same library and gave it another read.
Oh god. It’s rough.
I don’t wanna go too much into it, partly because I’m lazy and partly because I just don’t want to think about it anymore. The initial premise for the setting is interesting, but nearly every character is one-dimensional and boring. It makes for a story that really starts to drag and lose all momentum about halfway through.
The artwork is… fine?? A few supporting characters have neat designs. I’m sad the same can’t be said for the two leads. And the action (not even just bombastic action, even keeping track of who’s doing what and where they are) are so incredibly hard to follow sometimes.
I’m done. Whatever. It was neat to take a trip down memory lane, I suppose.
The author brought the to a satisfactory conclusion and I was fully satisfied. It's still a mystery to me that this series didn't get higher Goodread's scores; maybe its the absence of fan service.
In this satisfying conclusion to the Train+Train series, Arena finally arrives in former friend Kevin's hometown to battle him in their long-anticipated duel--only to find that this fight is no longer possible. In despair, Arena agrees to go back to her grandfather, despite Reiichi's attempts to stop her.
