C. L. R. James (1901-1989), a prominent black Trinidadian intellectual, has been increasingly recognized as a social critic, historian, and cultural commentator of central importance. During the late 1930s and 1940s, James played a key role in the revolutionary socialist current associated with Leon Trotsky.
