Against the Queen’s wishes, Maluai, princess of a hidden race of underwater beings, will stand as champion in the Eldritch Trials to atone for the crimes of the land Griffins.
In the world of Eldritch the Griffins have lived at the top of the food chain for centuries. One of the first developed species, they’ve held their station and influence over the world with little contention. But the effects of time are unavoidable and often damaging.
The water Griffins, their sister species, lived widely unknown to the rest of the world but are forced to show themselves when the land Griffins put their lives at risk. The wavering values of the land Griffins impact the very foundation their civilization was built on and the blood of their island spills out into the seas poisoning the kingdom below.
Though they have lived apart, in the eyes of Mother Goddess, they are one and will be judged as one. Should Maluai fail, they will suffer her curse together.

Born and raised in Chicago, IL, writing has always been a passion for Jessica Cage. She dabbles in artistic creations of all sorts but at the end of the day, it's the pen that her hand itches to hold. Jessica had never considered following her dream to be a writer because she was told far too often "There is no money in writing." So she chose the path most often traveled. During pregnancy she asked herself an important question. How would she be able to inspire her unborn son to follow his dreams and reach for the stars, if she never had the guts to do it herself? Jessica decided to take a risk and unleash the plethora of characters and their crazy adventurous worlds that had previously existed only in her mind, into the realm of readers. She did this with hopes to inspire not only her son but herself. Inviting the world to tag along on her journey to become the writer she has always wanted to be. She hopes to continue writing and bringing her signature Caged Fantasies to readers everywhere.
Honestly, this is more like 2.5 stars for me but since I can't use half stars, I rounded up; it's not *bad*, but at the same time, I didn't find it really that good. I read this ARC through Booksprout.
I feel I need to review this book in two parts. The first half of the book is done well enough: The world building is strong; the character development, albeit on the thin side, gets the job done; and relationships are presented in such a way you can see the perceived familial conflicts (mother and daughter mainly) and the budding relationship between Maluai and Jeraim is a slow burning type of sweet. After Maluai's father dies, the pain and reactions seem true to form and are understandable based on what we've been given in the character development.
Then the book begins to fall apart for me.
After a brief demonstration as to how the land griffins are moving farther and farther away from the goddess, we learn, dun dun dunnnn, there will be a trial that the griffins must face. In a very Harry Potter fashion, of course our main character is the one to face it.
Along the way, there is training, random, seemingly pointless eumen appear but flitter out just as fast (and granted, these characters may be more fleshed out in the other books in the series), and overall enlightenment is gifted to or heroine through the trial. Once the trial is completed, the story limps along to the finish line with a predictable and convenient fairy tale ending.
Overall I wish this was better. I couldn't relate to anyone in the book; I found word choices to be downright clunky at time (and this after creating random words to translate from English which are published at the start of the book); and the happily ever after ending too calculated. This just wasn't for me.
True fantasy lovers will eat up this new world. There is a new language, self-worth, an underlying commentary, and trials of the mind that kept me intrigued page after page. I am not a full fantasy lover but I found myself enjoying and wanting more from this new world. I can't wait to see how the other authors in the series interpret the trials.
OH MY GOODNESS! I received an ARC of this book and I was not ready!
This book is the first in a series and it was truly magical! The characters and scenery were so well written you could see every scene in your mind! Jessica Cage really knocked it out of the park with this one. If you love fantasy, magical people of color and superb writing, YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE THIS BOOK!
A Corruption of Gilded Ashes by @jcageauthor is the perfect kind of book for some who wants to get into fantasy. It starts with our FMC (Malaui) wanting to flee because she feels trapped and the only person she talks about it with is the MMC (Jeraim). Something tragic happens that makes the queen decide that she is tired of her people being hidden, this sets off a trial that Malaui volunteers for. What I really like is how we know she hates attention and being trapped but she grows and figures out that she can be where she's needed without being trapped. My favorite thing about this book is that she gives pronunciations and translations for the world we are about to be immersed in, I feel that is a missed opportunity a lot in fantasy. It's definitely friends to lovers in the best way because there was no question whether or not they were going to end up together.

A Corruption of Gilded Ashes by Jessica Cage is the first book in a fantasy series written by seven different Black women. The book tells the story of Maluai, a princess of an underwater world who volunteers herself for the dangerous Eldritch Trials after the damage caused by the land Griffins. The world-building was very well done, and I found myself engrossed in this unique world with many fantastical beings unlike others I've seen in fantasy books. I loved the relationship between Maluai and Jeraim; I thought it was very sweet. The trials themselves were also very intriguing, and definitely a unique challenge for Maluai to face. While I did enjoy this book, it didn't really stick out to me in any particular way. Maluai, while relatable, felt like your average "I'm not like other girls" main character at times. Overall though, I thought A Corruption of Gilded Ashes was a fun read. If you enjoy fantasy, you may want to check it out!
I just recently started following Jessica Cage and have been extremely interested in her writing so when the opportunity for the Arc came along, I knew I wanted to jump on it. I love how it gives the pronunciation guide in the beginning, it helps to give that feeling of a different world. I am truly a sucker for a strong female protagonist and this story does not disappoint. The concept of the Trials is intriguing and the fact that each trial will be written by a different author is extremely enticing. Jessica does a great job with describing the characters and their differences with each clan. You are able to clearly visualize who they are and what their world looks like. I can definitely connect with and appreciate how she navigates describing the families and their dynamics. I am pleased with how the quick read with the Arc went and I can't wait to dive into the series and all of the Trials. Wonderful job.

This was my first time venturing into the fantasy world and I will admit this was a great book. After reading this one I went down a rabbit hole and read all other books by this author. Her writing is amazing and the characters are all great.

Very entertaining plot. Still has many typos and some things could be worded more eloquently but with those minor edits, it will be perfect! Can’t wait to read the next one.
A magical adventure to finding one’s self and stepping out in your truths.
This is a great dive into fantasy genre. It was a easy read and a great lead into a series that will be written by numerous authors. Love the sprinkle of romance. It was light and didn’t dilute the FMC’s main role. Some spots felt shortened like there was more to tell.
Received the book as ARC, but I think I was in a bit of a fantasy book slump. So, it took me a bit longer than I expected to read it. But it’s not a long fantasy book, so it should be a quick read.
Jessica does a great job with her imagery in this book. Her description are so well written, it is easy to imagine the scenes as they happen. I’d love to see this book come to life on a screen. Love the description of the characters. I also enjoyed the imagery in the trials. The pacing was great, and it was easy to forget that the scene was the trial at times.
Confronting child trauma, insecurities, and strained family relationships made some of this story relatable. But the resolutions felt a bit clean cut and easier than expected.
Overall, this was a great read. Highly recommend for anyone interest in AA Fantasy genre.

What in the world are water griffins? This unknown shape shifting species has remain hidden away from the world in Wallai, their underwater kingdom, for a long time. This secrecy has been protected by the Goddess and through the strong alliance of their land “cousins” in shoreside kingdom of Forge.
Maluai (pronounced Mal-Way) is a princess of Walllai (pronounced Wal-lie), but she has little interest in the life of a hidden royal. She craves adventure and exploration. Her one desire is to go out and see the world one day. Maluai not only has the pressure of being a member of the royal family. She’s also plagued with hiding her true form from Wallai’s citizens, councilmen, her friends, and even her sisters. Her starvation for authenticity and adventure has led her to find kinship in the most unlikely place. On solid ground. And with a land griffin.
But is there a flutter of something more? Maluai and Jeraim’s friendship begin to edge on an unspoken closeness that is becoming harder to ignore.
When the actions of the land griffins of Forge cause mayhem and destruction in Wallai, the Queen of Wallai must decide if it’s finally time to dissolve this uneven partnership and allow the water griffins to finally have a visible place in this world. But at what price?
Death? A century old curse? Your middle child? Maybe all three…
Forge and Wallai has been called up to the Eldritch Trials. And both Queens are a bit shook. Is this the result of Forge’s attitude of grandeur? Or Wallai’s strong will for independence? Either way, the Goddess has spoken. A chosen representative must travel to Elderton to complete a series of challenges to regain favor from the Goddess. Failure in the trials would result in a 100-year curse to the kingdom and possible death to the chosen challenger. The stakes are high and everyone seems to hold their breath waiting for the Goddess to pick her person.
To remain invisible is no longer an option. Maluai is chosen. She’ll need training. And she’ll need to come to terms with her deepest fears if she wants to survive. Facing her fears means facing her family, her heart, and her truth. This is a serious mirror moment, where the end result could be death.
Malaui’s trials confront her desire to roam the world and the implications her adventurous spirit could have on her Royal duties and the residents of Wallai. She will also have to overcome her fears of being more than friends with Jeraim. She will have finally embrace her true form publicly and confidently. And the ultimate test will be not running away from experience her greatest loss.
But if Malaui wins, she’ll be a champion of her people. She’ll get to return home. Wallai would find favor and be allowed to govern themselves freely and unhidden. That may mean Forge would still need to answer for themselves. And that may just mean another trial. Another representative.

A Corruption of Gilded Ashes is a fantasy novel set in the world of Eldritch. where two species of griffins, the land griffins, and the water griffins, have lived apart for centuries. When the land griffins commit a terrible crime, the water griffins are forced to show themselves and take part in the Eldritch Trials, a series of challenges that will determine the fate of their entire race.
Maluai our lead heroine longs to see the world beyond her kingdom, but her mother, the queen, is a bit of a helicopter parent. Maluai has always been a little different than the rest of her race.
When a tragedy occurs that threatens the very existence of her people, Maluai is allowed to volunteer for the Eldritch Trials. A series of dangerous challenges. Maluai must face off against powerful opponents, including the land Griffins. Along the way, she must learn to trust herself and her abilities, and she must come to terms with her own past and who she truly is.
This was an engaging novel with a strong female protagonist. Maluai was a relatable and sympathetic character who is easy to root for. The supporting cast was also well-developed. From her sisters to her bodyguard to Jeraim. The plot is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing. The world-building is what blew me away - from the underwater kingdom of Maluai's people to the harsh and unforgiving land of the land Griffins. The descriptions of the different environments are vivid and atmospheric, truly transporting the reader
I did feel that some scenes were... A bit overdone or repetitive Towards the middle I felt it was a bit slow, especially after the strong opening - maybe I was still on the emotional high IDK I also felt the romance staled for a few chapters Despite my grumps overall it was a good read and I will be looking for more from this author
If you love a dark fantasy book that is literally going through a trial this is for you. This is the first release from a 8 book 8 author shared World Series under the Eldritch Trials. Jessicas book is the first to release and it didn’t disappoint what so ever. This story deals with land griffin who have as secret “sister” society called the water griffin. The Land Griffin are suppose to be protecting the hidden water griffin but something happens causing the water griffin to no longer want to stay hidden. In fact they wish to be their own society no longer attached to the land griffin. Doing this caused the governing Goddess Lunai to invoke the Eldritch Trails. In the Eldritch Trials volunteers from each society will put in a bid to be the “chosen one” that will go through the trials on behalf of their society. If you lose then your society will be cursed for 100 years, which could cause a society to completely die out .
The book follows a water griffin names Maluai , who happens to be a princess and middle child , but she is different than everyone else in her community. Due to this she has hidden her true self most of her life. She no longer wants to do that . Needless to say she enters into the trials in order to find the encourage to be her true self while fighting on behalf of her people.
The trials are wild and feel every bit of real. There is action, love interest , people out for themselves, and so much more. All while being in a universe controlled by a goddess . It’s an amazing read that will have you ready to fight .
Malaui is the princess of the hidden race of underwater griffins. They have lived in secret under the Forge, the home of the land Griffins. When an accident occurs on the Forge it is Malaui and her people who suffer the most. This destruction triggers a reaction from the Mother Goddess, who sees the two people as one and an Eldritch Trial is called. Malaui is chosen to do the Trial and if she fails both people will be cursed for 100 years.
This is only the second book I read from Jessica but she writes strong female characters that have a good amount of sass. Malaui definitely fits this role as the rebellious but isolated princess. She was a joy to read. As was the world building, it was really well done and it feels like this was just a dip into what is to come in the rest of the shared world. Although there were a couple other characters that seemed to be thrown in just to introduce them for their own books, which I didn't think really needed to happen. I was also a little confused as to why Malaui was so different from the rest of her family, there never seemed to be an explanation for that. Since the series is written as a shared universe I'm not sure we will get an answer for that. But the overall world seems really compelling and I look forward to reading more.
Rating 3.5 stars *I received a review copy from Booksprout for my voluntary and honest review
Where do I start? I’ve been wanting to read one of Jessica’s books since I discovered her on instagram. I was stoked when I got the chance.
This book has it ALL! Family, fantasy, romance, tragedy, excitement/enthusiasm, mystique! Whatever you’re looking for it is in it!
The characters drew me in, even those who were supporting characters. The Royal family reminded me of my own. Three headstrong daughters. A strong mother who only wants what is best for them. A dearly departed father who loved his girls with all he had.
Being able to see myself in the three daughters, Kaluai, Maluai, and Naluai, kept me turning each page, wanting to know what we did next! I surprised myself each time I made a prediction.
If you want to read a typical book about a Royal family, get something else! If you’re ready to be on the edge of the page reading about Wallai’s quest for independence and freedom, get it! And read it! NOW!.

The book overall left me just eh, and there are a few reasons for that.
1. I was given an advanced copy to read so I figured that there would potentially be typos. Unfortunately when I went through the official release the same typos were there and phrases were not always clear. This made it difficult at times which took away from the experience.
2. The book started off slow building up to the main "event(s)". At this point, the book found a decent pace but once that was over it felt like a rushed ending. I almost didn't even make it to the main part but pushed through.
3. Honest im not the biggest fan of the main character. There was something about her that annoyed me to no end. Maybe her indecisiveness in almost every dang on thing but I don't know. She just didn't do anything for me.
Would I recommend this book yes but def not one that I feel is a must read. Its for when you need something just interesting enough to finish.

This was a decent introduction into the world of the Eldritch Trails. We start out in this novel with the Water Griffins. I enjoyed reading about the different forms they would take and how they lived compared to the Land Griffins. There is a slow burn forbidden romance side plot that I believe was written well and did not distract from the main plot, Maluai, the FMC, going to the Eldritch trials. I enjoyed watching Maluai growing and learning how to be more confident in herself.
What was eh for me - The writing was a bit of a distraction in the beginning for me. It seems more like the author was telling us things instead of showing us. I got to a point where I over looked it to focus more on the story, which helped me enjoy the story more. The ending also felt a little rushed. I feel like even though the book is close to 400 pages, it could have been longer or the beginning portion could have left out stuff to flesh out the ending.
All in all, I liked this book. I'd still recommend it to those who love fantasy or even those who want to get into fantasy.
The World Building is amazing I had just discovered Jessica and following her on IG. I was super interested in her writing and when this ARC came up I jumped at the chance to read it! This story was amazing, Jessica managed to weve into this fantasy world the problems that our society faces daily. Ahe has a way with language that really makes you think hard about how you currently see the world. The Main character goes on the most incredible journey to not only save her people but to find her true, authentic self, flaws and all. This is only book one and now I am invested in this world, in these people's and how each new character is going to face the challenge. I could go on and on about what this book did to me and ment to me on an emotional level. I could tell you it wrecked me and then wrecked me again at the end. I could tell you it gave me hope. What I want to tell you Read it, you won't ever be sorry!
A Corruption of Gilded Ashes is part of the Eldritch Trials, a series set in the World of Eldritch and to be written by eight authors.
In this installment, Jessica Cage introduces us to Eldritch through the griffins, a race divided between the land griffins of Forge and the water griffins of Wallai. Maluai, princess of the water griffins, must face the trial issued by the goddess Lunai to protect the griffin race.
The world building is interesting, with a history of the griffins and their customs, new vocabulary, and detailed descriptions. Themes like family relationships and loss are handled well and the romance is predictable, but enjoyable.
Overall, the book does a good job of introducing the reader to the world of Eldritch and presenting Maluai's story. It's a recommended read for fans of world building, fantasy, and mythical creatures.

This book was given to me by Jessica Cage as for a ARC review and baby..let me just say when I first started reading it I was doing my best to understand the characters because it was my first time reading a book like this. But after I got through the slow burn and realized I can see myself in a few of the characters I was hooked. I found myself smiling and crying because it made my reflect on my own life and fears I let hold me back. I enjoyed this book and wish I was able to see what happens in future tense. I would recommend this to friends. It’s different, refreshing and just all out an amazing read. Nice action, not to overly mushy, great visuals given with great suspense. I am hooked and think I found a new genre to read. Thank you for choosing me to be ARC reader. I hope I can continue to be in your list.

This is my first book I have read by this author. I was really drawn in by the imagery and world-building, I could really see Wallai world. I feel the author did a wonderful job with character development for our MC Maluai and how the relationship with both her parents shaped her view of herself. Maluai courage to go into the Eldritch Trials was the turning point in our heroine story and put her on the journey of self-discovery that lead to some very emotional moments. Due to Maluai family and Wallai world being so important to her story I would have enjoyed a little more flushing out of that world and her family. I also would have enjoyed more scenes surrounding her relationship with Jeraim and how her being a water griffin and he a land griffin was forbidden. Overall I would definitely be reading more books by this author.
I feel like my review might be different once I get a physical copy of this book because the spacing and paragraphs had me in tears and confused with what was going. Not to mention I could remember the definitions to some of the words and I had to scroll all the way to the beginning and then hope for the best with getting back to my correct spot. I really enjoyed the world building and the way the characters were portrayed. The beginning does start out rough since I felt like I was thrown in the deep in with no life jacket but once I got past that I was immediately sucked in. Now this book might not be for everybody, but I had a fun time reading through it and I know for a fact I will be reading more by the lovely Jessica Cage.

This was certainly a tale of self discovery. Though it was a fantasy, it’s written in a way that almost anyone can find themselves in the book. The world building was good, there’s a glossary of words for those who enjoy that. I don’t tend to use the glossary because if the author is descriptive enough, I can typically figure it all out as I read. I was able to do that with this book. The story followed the main protagonist as she battled through both internal and external trials. In the end, you see her full strength shining through. There is a friends to lovers romance, but there’s zero spice for those wondering. It doesn’t take away from the book at all. Overall, I’d be interested to see how this world continues to develop and evolve with each installment.

For the most part, I liked this. The characters read well and the plot, even if its on the simple side, is fun to follow. Was it the most imaginative thing I'd ever read? Eh, not exactly. I'd be darned if I couldn't pinpoint some pretty obvious source material. The ending was also a little convenient and neat, and well, maybe it's me liking all the dark and bittersweet goodness, but I thought this read younger than the author intended. But in no way does this imply the read was bad. I actually had a damn good time reading it, from the trials themselves to even the ending, which despite how (unbelievably) well it worked out, I still liked. For a fiction, fantasy read, try it. It's not perfect and I would completely understand why some people wouldn't like it, but sometimes, you just need a read to take your mind off things and this will do the job.
I really, really enjoyed this book. I've been diving more into fantasy, but I've never read a book where the author makes up their own world, language, and everything. ( not saying they don't exist. I just haven't read them) I was a little hesitant to read it at first, but I was hooked from the first chapter. I loved that the story spotlighted a headstrong female character and Maluai was just that. I loved the romance notes laced throughout it, and the story line that just seemed to get deeper and deeper. I definitely recommend this book and I can't wait to read the other 7 books in this shared world series. Excellent work, Jessica Cage!.

This was absolutely a page turner almost from the start! I'm so glad I found Jessica Cage.... indie boob authors really are opening doors. The world building in this book was EVERYTHING! If you're a high stakes fantasy lover, this book is definitely for you!
It's definitely an introduction novel and does a good job of setting the pace for the upcoming books. Knowing that all the books are written by different authors, I'm curious how the other books are going to fold into this one! I can't wait to jump right into those next!
It's packed full of Black girl magic 🪄 so happy to have fantasy for us by US! You have a fan for life!.

Beautiful imagination! What I loved most about this book was the world building. I was impressed with the author’s description of both the underwater world and the people (Eumen), including the ones dwelling on land. I’ve seen so many “mermaid type” people when describing underwater civilizations in books but this author was thinking outside the box in creating the overall look of the characters and their magical abilities. I could envision this world as a movie, and it played out as such in my head while I read. Really great imagery in this book. Maluai’s journey of discovery through the Eldritch trials was heart pumping, I was anxious throughout, wanting to know what happened next. Also, I want to visit this underwater world :D If I had to categorize this book, I would say YA fantasy. If that is your jam, you will love this book.
First and foremost the world this book centered was described beautifully. You could visualize and feel every new aspect introduced Maluai has so much going on that she doubts her own strength and power. But the love and lessons of her father ultimately prepare her for a set of trials that will force her to face her fears and challenge not only her beliefs but her own doubts she doesn't know she has. This is the perfect coming of age story for anyone who feels they are misunderstood and alone in the world. I thoroughly enjoyed this read. .

I've followed Jessica Cage for a while, so when the opportunity to review this ARC, I jumped on it. We got a pronunciation guide initially, which helped me enter this new world. The female MC is a strong character which I loved about this story. The concept of the Eldritch trials and the shared world by multiple authors is really interesting.
Jessica did a great job describing the characters, so I could clearly visualize them and the world they inhabit. I'm excited to read the rest of the books in the series.

I liked the book overall. The beginning gave a good explanation for the main character’s motivation and I knew Fituen was not to be trusted early on! a My only issue was that the “lessons” of Maluai’s trials seemed a tad predictable, BUT I read many books in this genre. I am excited to read the other books in the series because the glimpse of the other characters has me intrigued. Overall, very good job Ms. Cage!

The world building in this story was amazing. I felt like I could see the locations, the people, the animal and plant life. The culture is rich and the water griffins desire for independence from the land griffins was a good plot device. I liked the main character and her relationships with her family.
I wish the storyline was tighter, especially around the trail. I wish we learned why the main character was so unique among her people, it feels like an unresolved plot point.

I hate that this took me so long to read, which was not on the book. This was a great story that seemed truly unique. The way that story was woven, the character's flaws and fears - trials. I loved that there was a romance, and that it was lightly done.
Definitely recommend this book if you enjoy a book that has great world-building, is character-driven, and plot-heavy. There's heartache, action, and magic with shifters - what more could you ask for?.
Received as a gift and am leaving an honest review.
