Twisted Sisterss Aspen Brooks cant catch a breakeven during spring break Aspen Brooks trades in sand between her toes for shopping on The Strip when she agrees to go to Las Vegas for spring break with her boyfriend, Rand, her bff, Angel, and Angels bf, Lucas. Their hotel is hosting the Miss Teen Queen Pageant and surgically enhanced beauty contestants are everywhere. But when Miss Illinois goes AWOL, its up to Aspen to represent her home state and find out whats really going on. Even if it means putting down the suntan lotion and ignoring Angels meltdown over breaking up with Lucas
Aspen and her boyfriend, Rand, along with their friends Angel and Lucas, are off to Sin City for some well-deserved R&R. Trouble seems to find Aspen, and after her crazy first semester at college, soaking up rays by the pool is exactly what her hot boyfriend Rand ordered.
But fans of Stephanie Hale's novice detective can anticipate that spring break isn't going to turn out the way it was planned.
It starts out with Angel getting overly jealous of Lucas. The group runs into one of Lucas's old friends (of course a girl), Emerson, from his 4-H days. Emerson is at the same hotel as the gang representing Illinois in the Miss Teen Queen Pageant. Aspen and Rand are able to divert that disaster, only to have Aspen come down with food poisoning at a cheap seafood buffet.
When Aspen has to bow out of their planned trip to the Hoover Dam, she stumbles upon the news that Emerson has gone missing and the pageant can't go on if there aren't representatives from all the states. Well, Aspen gets the clever idea to become the new Illinois entry with the assistance of Emerson's mom. They decide that the best way to discover why Emerson has gone missing is to get behind the scenes.
Aspen is positive that the cop on the case, Detective Grant, is incompetent. And Aspen's intuition leads her to believe that the pageant mistress is somehow behind Emerson's disappearance. So Aspen goes undercover, befriending the other contestants to solve Emerson's departure.
Through rough patches with her friends, and crazy encounters on the pageant scene, Ms. Hale creates a fun, spontaneous spring break for Aspen and her friends. If you can suspend your belief that any of this could happen the way it's been written, you will find yourself enjoying every bit of the ride.
Only Aspen could land herself in such a crazy situation on her vacation!
I honestly thought the book was bland. The characters especially the main one was(were) unlikable, not in the sense of their personalities but more in the sense of character traits. There is no human like the main character(Aspen) because that's just not how humans are. She was overly conceited to the point were it was annoying. There wasn't enough background info. on the pageant mistress and a lot of questions were left unanswered. The plot line was okay but not great. This book is the type of book I would read if I had nothing else to read and wanted TO READ A PETTY BOOK INSTEAD OF A BOOK WELL WORTH IT.
Aspen Brooks is back and once again in trouble. In the third book in the Aspen Brooks series Aspen and her boyfriend Rand head off to Las Vegas for spring break with their friends Angel and Lucas and the trip seems doomed from the start.
Aspen's luck just seems horrible. First, Angel gets plane sick and throws up all over Aspen. If that wasn't bad enough, the airline then loses her luggage which means no clean clothes. After that things just spiral downhill.
On their first night in Vegas, Angel gets overly jealous of Lucas' old friend, Emerson, who just happens to be in the Miss Teen Queen Pageant that is being hosted at their hotel. Aspen and Rand manage to get Angel and Lucas out of that disaster but Aspen gets food poisoning from the buffet they went to later. Things couldn't seem to be any worse but then Emerson goes missing.
As luck would have it, Emerson was representing Illinois, the same state that Aspen is from. Aspen decides that the only way to find out what happened to Emerson is by taking her place in the Miss Teen Queen Pageant with the help of Emerson's mom, Mona. As Aspen starts digging, she becomes absolutely positive that Emerson didn't just walk away for no reason. The only problem is, she has no proof and the police are not exactly willing to help. So, with the help of her old friends and some new ones, Aspen goes undercover to solve the case.
Once again Stephanie Hale has created a wonderful story full of romance, comedy, and, of course, some mystery. I was a little skeptical at first but once I got into the book I couldn't put it down. If you are looking for a quick, fun read this is the book for you. Also, if you are looking for more Aspen, her first two books are, Revenge of the Homecoming Queen and Twisted Sisters.
So this is the first book I have ever won on this website-yay! So I am going to try to put more effort into this review than most of mine! I realized when I started reading it that it has been a looong time since I have read any YA, and while I was a little put off by the style of writing at first, it was easy enough to get into the swing of things and I was able to enjoy this book for its simplicity and was able to finish it in a day. (I mean, I am still used to Sweet Valley for YA books, so...) The plot was pretty far fetched. However, the ending not as obvious as I was thinking, and the author didn't go to extremes of putting the main character in danger that would have made the book completely outlandish. I think most YA readers would appreciate that, I certainly did. I didn't like how this was obviously a sequel, as determined by the Babysitters Club-like chapter detailing everything that happened in the previous books. I feel like that could have been better incorporated. I don't think I will follow up with this character in other books any time soon, unless maybe I am at a bookstore looking for a quick read. The writing was pretty well done, I liked the Vegas setting because that will catch me anytime, and all in all it was a fun breezy read. Yay free books!
Very much reminiscent of the film "Miss Congeniality". I liked it and would probably give it 3.5 stars. It's a bit sexier than the other books in the series.
I think I really like this series because they are YA mysteries which are hard to find outside the sci-fi & fantasy arena. Although the mysteries are very Nancy Drew-esque, I still enjoy Aspen's shenanigans. Total guilty pleasure, but not so embarrassing that I'm unwilling to admit to it.
Aspen, Rand, Angel, and Lucas are going to Vegas for a relaxing Spring Break. When they get to Vegas, they realize that the Miss Teen Queen beauty pageant is being held at their hotel. Of course, Miss Illinois goes missing and Aspen just has to take her place in the pageant, and sovle the case!
Another funny tale of Aspen solving crime. This one kind of reminded me of Miss Congeniality!
This was a good book. Reminded me of the movie Ms Congiealty though. It is sold as a good teen book, and I think it would be great for that, but it did keep me entertained as well. Good beach read.
Reading Stephanie Hale is like watching your favorite tv show - it just makes you happy you found the story. Stephanie's books are the first I read in the YA market and spurred my move from Women's Fiction to YA. And... she's a pretty stellar human being as well.
The first is still the best book in this series (think about the movie Clueless to get a feel for what to expect). This one was definitely better than book 2 though, so that made me happy. Book 2 wasn't bad, exactly; it just dragged on a lot.
This is a Goodreads Giveaway win. Even though this book was not of my favorite genre, I did finish it and it was just ok. It was one of my free books so I was obligated to give it a chance.
