I don't recommend this book. I used it as a basis for teaching a Transportation Management course and after chapter 4 gave up and created my own material while looking for a new book.
As an industry professional with 30 years of experience, I found the book to be out of touch with modern transportation theory and practice. It has a heavy slant to pre-deregulatory transportation and did a poor job of explaining in clear and simple terms how modern transportation works. It did not provide a very dynamic supply chain perspective and was extremely difficult to get good data from for presentation purposes. Student uniformly found the book difficult to read, extremely difficult to understand and impossible to apply.

I liked the real-world stories, but having to read it in one month and all I thought about was reading it for a deadline made me enjoy it less for sure
