Adds to and expands on Jim Knight's approach to instructional coaching. The main addition has to do with the use of video to enhance the experience. However, it comes back to foundational principles such as trust between the coach and client and choice in how the video is used.

I have found the advice around teaching and coaching to be sound and helpful. I am working on implementing these practices with the new teachers I coach and in a video coaching cohort. So far so good.

Focus on Teaching is an extremely helpful book to guide the use of videotaping in the classroom. Pedagogical considerations as well as possible techniques are explored. Jim Knight is clearly well read, however, the amount of self-references is nauseating -- try some footnotes next time.

Got this novel based on the recommendation of someone I really trust and respect to help me be a better mentor and to help me record better for National boards. It was really eye opening in terms of what to look for in a recording of a classroom and in teaching. I can see the merit of recording and reviewing the footage of teaching. Sports teams review their performances... so why shouldn't teachers?
