The Barn

Rate this book
I clenched my eyes tight.I shoved my fingers into my ears. The sounds I heard still haunt me unto this day. Roars and screams; slashing and gurgling; the sound of scared men dying violently. He did his work quickly, and for that I'm thankful.

When a young man sneaks out of his house late one night to meet with his girlfriend in an abandoned barn, he soon finds himself trapped with a trio of gangsters and one unusual hit man.

THE COVER ART: This cover photo is very appropriate and gives you a sense of what to expect. The design hints at the eerie nature of the story. I like the unusual font used to highlight the title. I also appreciate the contrast in the fonts for the aforementioned title and the author’s name. Sometimes, when the same font is used for both it is easy for readers to become a bit confused (trying to decipher which one is which) at first glance. LOL!

THE TEXT: I thought it was pretty good and quite insightful on the author’s part. He captures the essence of what many teenagers experience as they are making the transition to adulthood. He manages to describe everything and keep my interest without resorting to vulgar language or an overdose of blood and guts. He tells a good story with enough details to give you chills and thrills while not disgusting you with gory/sordid details. I really liked this short! It is the ideal type of story to read when you’re in the mood for something spooky and paranormal but don’t feel like reading a lengthy novel.

I got an ARC copy via Instafreebie.

Bizarre and leaving you guessing to the very end, our unwitting protagonist is a dumb teenager that likes to make out with a girl named Laura in an old man's abandoned barn in rural Indiana. When he is caught by his parents, his father staunchly warns him to stay away because a family from Chicago had just moved there and he would be punished if he returned.

The warning obviously falls on dead ears and the dumb kid sneaks out the door that very evening but he witnesses something both incredible and horrifying. I'd love to tell the rest, but I don't want to ruin the ending. You'll just have to read it in order to find out.

A little chilly story about a boy who sets out to meet his girlfriend in the barn like he always has done even though his father suddenly warns him that things have changed. And he should have listened....
Nicely written, I will try some other books by the author, even though it seems strange that the boy's dad knew so much, and his girlfriend's dad too?

This short story was fabulous - what you think is a straightforward horror story is not all it seems. I'd definitely recommend it to everyone - suitable for young adults (who like slightly gorey details) upwards.
NB I received a complimentary copy of this book, but I always give an HONEST review based wholly on my own opinions

A short story that doesn't quite chill the bones, but keeps you guessing until the final scene.

a very short story about a teenage boy, who was where he shouldn't have been. He witnesses something that night he will never forget.

Okay writing, but the story was “eh.”

I can’t really say much else because the story was so short that you got almost nothing out of it.

I read it in like 5 minutes.
