কলকাতার পার্চমেন্ট প্রকাশনী থেকে প্রকাশিত এস. মুখার্জীর ‘আদিভৌতিকঃ ব্রিটিশ ভারতের আদিযুগের ভুতুড়ে গল্প’ বইটি মূল ইংরেজি ‘দ্য বুক অফ ইন্ডিয়ান ঘােস্ট স্টোরিজ’-এর বাংলা অনুবাদ।
অনুবাদ ও সম্পাদনা করেছেন সৌরভ চক্রবর্তী। তার ভূমিকা থেকে বলা যায়-
এই বইয়ের গল্পগুলি সাহিত্যমূল্যের দিক থেকে সব ক্ষেত্রে হয়তাে রসােত্তীর্ণ ভূতের কাহিনি হয়ে ওঠেনি। বস্তুত, অধিকাংশই সেই অর্থে ভূতের গল্পও নয়, বরং বলা ভালাে কিছু ভুতুড়ে ঘটনার পুনর্কথন। মূল গল্পগুলিতে অসংখ্য পুনরুক্তি আছে, অনেক ক্ষেত্রে ন্যারেটিভের খেই হারিয়ে ফেলেছেন লেখক নিজে, যেমন খুশি ঢুকে পড়েছে নতুন চরিত্র। কখনও, এক গল্প শুরু করে মাঝখানে অনেকটা জায়গা জুড়ে বলা হয়েছে আরেক গল্প, তারপর তাড়াহুড়ো করে শেষ করা হয়েছে মূল গল্প। এমনকি ব্যাকরণগত ভুলও প্রচুর, যা কয়েক জায়গায় বাক্যের অর্থও অস্পষ্ট করে দিয়েছে।
গল্পগুলোর গুরুত্ব মূলত ঐতিহাসিক। ঔপনিবেশিক ভারতে, বিশ আজকের দিকে লেখা এই গল্পগুলো ইংরেজি জানা পাঠকদের অবসর বিনোদনের জন্য বই আকারে ছাপা। শুধু ইংরেজি জানা পাঠক বললে সম্পূর্ণটা বলা হয় না। বইটির লক্ষ্য মূলত অ-ভারতীয়, কর্মসূত্রে এ দেশে আসা ইংরেজরা, যাদের কাছে বইটির গুরুত্ব গল্পগুলির টিপিকাল ভারতীয়ত্ব। বইটির নাম লক্ষ্যণীয়- "The Book of Indian Ghost".
গল্পগুলোতেও লেখকের একটা সচেতন প্রয়াস লক্ষ্য করা যায়, অবিভক্ত বাংলাদেশ তথা ভারতীয় সংস্কৃতির বিভিন্ন খবর জানাবার। এই প্রয়াস সাধিত হয়েছে বিভিন্ন উপায়ে। কখনো একটি দেশি শব্দ ইংরেজিতে লিখে তার পরের বাক্যে সেই শব্দটি সম্পর্কে এক লাইনের টীকা জুড়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে, কখনাে ঐতিহাসিকের মতাে বাতলে দেয়া হয়েছে বাংলার সংস্কৃতির কোনাে নির্দিষ্ট রীতি। একটি গল্পে যেমন লেখা হচ্ছে, "কাকাবাবুকে ঘর ছেড়ে দিয়ে আমার ঠাই হত বৈকখানায়। বৈঠকখানা মানে হল বসবার ও বাহিরের অতিথি- অভ্যাগতদের বসার ঘর।" আর একটি গল্পে, "জমিদার বাড়ির পুরানাে ভৃত্য মর্যাদায় ইংলন্ডের সাহেববাড়ির বাটলার-এর মতাে"। ফলে সবকটি গল্পেই এসে গেছে, রিপ্রেজেন্টেশনের প্রথা। এবং সমস্ত প্রশ্নেই লেখক গল্পগুলির ভারতীয়ত্ব শুধু অটুট রাখতে নয়, রীতিমতাে প্রদর্শন করতে সচেষ্ট। মনে রাখা দরকার ফিকশনের প্রধান দায় কিন্তু পণ্য হয়ে ওঠা। সায়েব পড়ুয়াদের বাজারে দেশি পণ্য কীভাবে বিকোবে সেই চিন্তা যে লেখকের মাথায় ছিল, তা গল্পগুলো পড়লেই বােঝা যায়।
মূল ইংরেজি 'ইন্ডিয়ান ঘোস্ট স্টোরি' বইটির লেখক এস, মুখার্জী কোনাে পরিচয় পাওয়া যায় না। ১৯১৪ সালে প্রথম সংস্করণের মুখবন্ধ লেখা হয়েছে কলকাতা থেকে, আবার ১৯১৭ সালে দ্বিতীয় সংস্করণের মুখবন্ধ লেখা হচ্ছে এলাহাবাদ থেকে। প্রায়ই পুরনো আমলের বাড়ি এবং স্থাপত্য নিয়ে বিশদ আলোচনা করেছেন লেখক। আলোচনা, এমনকি, দু-এক ক্ষেত্রে মাত্রা ছাড়িয়ে গেছে। এক জাযগায় লেখক আবার বাড়ির নকশা এঁকে দিয়েছেন। এই দুই দিক মিলিয়ে দেখে অন্তত এটুকু বলা চলে যে লেখকের স্থাপত্য এবং ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং বিষয়ে যথেষ্ট দখল ছিল এবং তিনি ১৯১৪ থেকে ১৯১৭-র মধ্যনতী সময়ে কলকাতা থেকে এলাহাবাদ গিয়েছিলেন। তবে এলাহাবাদে যে তার আগেও যাতায়াত বা যোগাযোগ ছিল তা নিশ্চিতভাবেই বলা যায়। কারণ, বইটি প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয় ১৯১৪ সালে এলাহবাদের এ. এইচ. হুইলার অ্যান্ড কোং নামে রেলস্টেশন লাগোয়া শহরে স্টল থেকে। সংস্থাটি স্থাপিত হয় ১৮৭৭ সালে, ফরাসি কর্মচারী এমিল মরিউ-এর উদ্যোগে। উদ্যোগটিতে সামিল ছিলেন টি, কে, ব্যানার্জি নামে এক বাঙালিও। দুর্ভাগ্যক্রমে এই টি, কে, ব্যানার্জী সম্পর্কেও কিছুই জানা যায় না।

Book Review: The Book of Indian Ghost Stories

Blurb: This Anthology brought together by Mukherji is accounts of various spectral sightings by people from post-1857 to 1947, otherwise known as Indian Independence Struggle in history, although there is no mention of the movement as such.
The ghostly chronicles in many cases are verified, and in some just illusions generated from general anxieties. Mukherji presents a contrast of possible explanations for the apparitions and Ghost sightings. Its like Logic and Gothic is sitting together, drinking tea and having conversation.
Some stories references the other stories in book itself, thereby making a nice flow and hinting at authenticity of tales.
Chapters are arranged thematically. We have Mistaken Identities, Curses, Defiling tombs, Premonitions of Deaths, Possessions, Contacting spirits, Fulfilling Last Wishes and many more. Overall it makes a nice companion bedside readings, and perhaps to relay on long journeys.
Strength: Organized Thematic Chapters, Conversational Language, Hints of Humors, Font choice.
Weakness: Binding Quality is low, Cover design is not appealing, No Mention of Source Material.

A book with collections of true ghost stories, experiences which happened in India (Most of them in Kolkata, then Calcutta) from 1857 to 1947. The stories which are written are either heard from known/unknown, experienced and also the famous ones which were mentioned in news as well. The author has done a good job of writing all thee stories related to the topic. There was also one story which I liked the most, where it is said that 'Our imaginations plays tricks with us sometimes' stating that we fear and that ignites our imagination to show things we are most scared of.
Some mysteries were never revealed, some loved ones making their last visits, some questions which could never be answered, etc are the key elements of this book. The most favourite chapter was 'What Uncle saw' because it was never revealed what he saw.
Overall a good one time read.
